Chapter 10
“Melissa get off my bed!”
“Katrina please,” whined her sister.
“I won’t even consider it unless you get off my bed,” yelled Kat.
“OK. I’m off the bed.”
“Fine wait for me downstairs.”
Her sister huffed but left the room. Kat stretched and looked at the clock, 8:30. Three hours sleep. She called Beth and filled her in on the days events when she got home. She then went into her darkroom and developed all the pictures she had taken. She had crawled into bed exhausted. It had been an emotionally draining day. Her mind wandered to Nick. He intrigued her. He didn’t reveal much about himself. However the pictures she took did reveal some things about all the guys. The affection they felt for each other made it evident they had all grown up together. They really were the only ones who understood the life they led. Nick was guarded. She knew there was definitely more going on inside him than he ever showed. Sighing, she got out of bed and went about getting ready. She threw on her bathing suit with a University of Kentucky T-shirt and cut-offs. She put sun block on her face and brushed her hair. She grabbed a scrunchie and camera equipment. Taking one last look in the mirror she decided it really didn’t matter if she figured out Nick Carter. After today, the 19-year-old kid would be out of her life and once again be a celebrity she only saw in the media or at a concert.
She went downstairs and saw Beth and Melissa waiting for her. They had decided to take horses over to the Wilson Place so they could go swimming later in the day. Melissa was practically jumping out of her skin with excitement. Melissa was more reserved than Katrina was. Heck she was in a house full of headstrong people. She found it easier to go quietly about her business. However, Katrina knew Melissa had a thing for bad boys or rather boys that appeared to be bad. AJ McLean fit that description to a T. Melissa also knew that AJ had recently become single again. She would never be bold, but she was happy to get to meet him and the rest Boys for that matter. So was Beth. She liked the boys for their talent, but had been partial to the Kentucky Cousins. She said it was only right to support the two who got out of Kentucky and accomplished so much. They saddle Raven, Melissa’s mare Gray Lady, and Boomer, a gilding, for Beth.
Mrs. Wilson had insisted on fixing a real country breakfast for the Boys. The girls helped her finish getting everything ready. The boys began to drift into the kitchen. The smells were drawing them there. The first two were AJ and Brian. Nick wandered in a few minutes later. Howie came in and said Kevin was still a sleep. Mrs. Wilson set about introducing Melissa and Beth to everyone, while Kat went upstairs with the platter of bacon. She knocked and got no response. She stuck her head in Kevin’s room. He was dead to the world. She walked over and put the platter close to his nose. He opened his eyes and saw the bacon then Kat. She laughed and told him to come down to breakfast.
After breakfast, the guys ran outside to start makeup and wardrobe. Mr. Wilson went to town. Melissa and Beth helped Mrs. Wilson clean up. Kat grabbed her equipment and followed the Boys. She quietly took pictures of them then went back outside to take more pictures of the crew. She also took pictures of the ladies working in the kitchen.
Mid-afternoon, the director had a problem with one of the main lights he was using for the shoot. He called around and found out he could only get the part in Cincinnati, which was an hour and half from the farm. He sent his assistant and gave everyone that afternoon off. The girls decided to go swimming. Beth took it upon herself to invite the guys. They grabbed their suits. Brian and Howie road the Wilson’s three-wheelers. The girls had taken the saddles off the horses when they arrived that morning and allowed them to graze. Kat automatically got on Raven’s bare back. She reached down and helped Nick up. Neither seemed to question the fact that they were riding together. It was just a given. Melissa and Beth followed Kat’s example deciding to ride bareback. Melissa helped AJ up and giggled at his uneasiness. Kevin hopped up behind Beth and held her waist lightly. Melissa led the way to the waterfall.
“Kat this is beautiful,” whispered Nick against her ear.
“I know. It’s my favorite place,” she responded.
Katrina stopped Raven and Nick slid off his back. He reached up and helped her down. They all pulled off any clothing they had on over their bathing suits. The guys were all wearing the standard trunks. Beth was in a nice black bikini. It showed off her tan and dancer’s legs. Her hair was long strawberry blonde. Melissa looked cute with her shoulder length light blond hair framing her face. She had on her white bikini that also complemented her tan. Melissa’s coloring was the exact opposite of Katrina’s, because she had their mother’s coloring except she had their father’s brown eyes where Kat had their mother’s green eyes. Kat was wearing her Red two-piece with the racing back top and boy cut bottom. Even though she had the most material on Nick found her the sexiest. Too bad she was 24 and would never give him the time of day.
“Stop,” ordered Kat.
“What,” asked Nick. He had just pulled his T-shirt over his head.
“I’ve seen pictures of the shark tattoo, but I want to see it up close. Plus no one has managed to get a picture of the music notes. I want to see both tats,” she stated.
Nick stood still while she examined first the shark on his shoulder then the music notes on his back. Nick was not prepared for her to lightly run her fingers over the shark. Her fingers against his skin felt nice. It stirred something within him. The reaction was only stronger when he felt her fingers on his back.
“Nice work,” she commented.
“Thanks. Now I’m going in. Are you coming,” he asked.
“Of course,” she replied then ran into the water. Nick closely followed.
They all swam. They splashed and dunked each other. Kat climbed out of the water and got one of her camera’s out the bag she had tied on the back of the three-wheeler Brian had ridden. She started to take pictures of everyone. She got one of Melissa and AJ sunning themselves. Kevin and Brian throwing Nick into the water while Howie and Beth were laughing in the background. Then a series pictures of Kevin picking up Beth, carrying her into the water and dropping her. She also got the reaction shot of Beth yanking Kevin in from underwater.
She sat the camera down and decided to climb up under the waterfall. Two-thirds of the way up the small waterfall was a natural ledge the water had cut over time. Kat climbed up the side of the fall and walked across the ledge and sat down. She leaned back into the water. Nick looked up to see her sitting there. He thought she looked beautiful. She had the same quality about her as she did the first time he saw her. Like she was removed from the world and looked ethereal. He spotted her camera sitting on the seat of the three-wheeler. He picked it up and snapped a couple of shots.
Brian watched his buddy do this. He knew his best friend was developing a crush. He just hoped the attraction wasn’t too strong, because they were leaving that night. He hated to see Nick pine over Kat and vice a versa. He then remembered the conversation with Kat the previous night.
“Katrina did you develop the pictures from yesterday?”
Kat looked down at him from her perch and said, “Yes I did. Do you want to see them?”
“Of course,” he replied.
“Well they are in my bag.”
“Cool.”
Brian pulled out the folder with the pictures. The others gathered around him. They were all making comments about the pictures. Kat watched them and after a minute decided to join them.
Without thinking she popped off the ledge and straight down into the water. Nick saw her fall out of the corner of his eye and yelled her name. She resurfaced to see him jumping into the water. The others were alarmed.
Beth yelled, “Katrina don’t do that!”
“Don’t do what?”
“Jump off the falls! You give me a heart attack when you do.”
“Come on Elizabeth, the falls is only 8’ max. The water is deep enough. It’s no big deal.”
“Well I didn’t know it,” Nick said quietly. He got out of the water and head up the side of the falls.
“Hey Nick where are you going,” inquired Brian.
“I’m taken a walk,” he replied and disappeared.
“What’s his problem,” asked Kat.
Howie answered, “I think you scared him. He saw you fall. We didn’t. We just heard the splash.”
“Good going sister dear,” taunted Melissa.
“Don’t tempt me little sister,” Kat fired back.
Katrina jumped out of the water and followed him. The others watched her go out of sight and went back to talking and looking at the pictures. Nick hadn’t gone far. He was sitting on the ground throwing rocks into the creek. Katrina watched him for a minute. She loved the way the sunlight played off his hair. She couldn’t tell if he knew she was there. Finally, she sat down beside him. Since he didn’t react she realized he knew she was there all along and was just ignoring her. This annoyed her.
“So are you just going to ignore me?”
“I don’t know.”
“You don’t know? You have no reason to ignore me. I didn’t do anything to you.”
“You scared me half to death! I’m sitting there looking at the photographs and out of the corner of my eye I see you falling into the water. Sorry for being concerned.”
“Fine. I’m a big girl. I can take care of myself,” she yelled.
“I know that,” Nick yelled back. “But that doesn’t mean it can’t scare me to see you fall off the falls.”
Kat started to say something, but stopped. She stared at Nick for a minute. She could see that his anger was the result of a concern for her safety. Her anger subsided. He saw a softening in her green eyes.
“Nick I’m sorry I scared you.”
“OK,” he said shortly as he looked away.
“Nick don’t be mad at me. Please?”
Nick looked into her eyes again and saw she was sincere. He felt his anger leaving him.
He sighed, “I’m not mad anymore.”
“Good! Let’s get the others and have a last swim before heading back to the house,” she said standing up and offering him a hand up.
They didn’t let go of each other’s hand until they got back to the group. They all took a last swim. Howie untied the bag holding towels on the back of his three-wheeler and hand them out. Once everyone had dried off and the girls had slipped their shorts back on, they put everyone’s shirts in the bag with the towels. After Kat put her camera and the photos back in her bag, she and Howie secured the bags on the backs of the three-wheelers. Everyone mounted up. However, Kevin was in front of Beth on Boomer.
As they were riding back, Nick whispered to Kat, “Let’s take off and leave them behind.”
Kat giggled, “Nick I don’t know. Are you comfortable with that? I mean we are riding bareback.”
“Are you going to fall off,” he asked.
“No,” replied Kat.
“Then I won’t either, because I’m going to hold you really tight.”
To prove his point, Nick tightened his hold on her. She got goose bumps. She could feel his breath on her bare shoulder. She urged Raven and he took off leaving the others behind. Nick laughed and squeezed Kat tighter. They didn’t slow until the reached the house. The video was finished, everything was packed up and life went back to normal.
Chapter 11
Three months had passed since the Backstreet Boys filmed their video at the Wilson’s farm. Their US Tour was making a stop in Lexington and the girls were going. The show was in the round. They had gotten seats level with the stage that way they could see everything. They were looking forward to the performance.
They had not stayed in touch with the guys. As Beth explained for her it was an inevitability, because Brian had a long time girlfriend and she just couldn’t see Kevin getting involved with another Beth. She was also too focused on her dancing. She was leaving in January to study in New York. Melissa still had a crush on AJ, but nothing had materialized. Kat and Nick had said goodbye that night, neither asking the other to stay in touch. They had fun during the video shoot, but that was it. There was the five-year age difference and so much else against them being together. The big reason being they were too blind to realize they were attracted to each other.
Even though Kat didn’t expect to see the guys anywhere but on the stage at Rupp Arena she threw her portfolio of the pictures she took that weekend in her car. They arrived in Lexington early to get dinner. They ate at DeShae’s which was directly across from the arena. It was tradition to go there before a concert. They also always visited Artiques, inside the Civic Center, which was attached to the Arena. The Center was full of specialty shops. Artiques had unique pieces of art and jewelry. They were browsing through Artiques when some one came up behind Katrina.
“Miss I’m afraid I’m going to have to ask you to leave.”
“What,” exclaimed Kat turning around. She was looking at someone who looked vaguely familiar. It came to her. “Well if it isn’t Remo the bodyguard. I almost didn’t recognize you with the smile.”
The man chuckled, “I try to smile as little as possible.”
“You shouldn’t. You have a nice smile. How have you been Remo?”
“Good. How are you?”
“We’re good.”
Remo asked, “You coming to the show?”
“Yes we are. I’m sorry Remo. Do you remember my sister, Melissa, and my best friend, Beth?”
“Yes I do. Hello ladies,” greeted Remo. “Do the boys know you are here?”
“No,” replied Kat.
“Did they ever see all the pictures you took,” asked Remo. He already knew the answer, because he had overheard Nick mention Kat and the pictures to Brian earlier in the day.
“No they didn’t.”
“But we have them with us,” interrupted Melissa.
“Great! I don’t have any passes with me, but I know the boys would love to see you after the show. Where are you sitting?”
Beth told him. Remo said he would find their seats and bring them passes. Lissa and Beth shut up Katrina before she could turn him down. Remo left them. Lissa practically dragged Kat back to the car for the portfolio. Beth tagging along behind, laughing all the way.
They got inside the arena without any injury from the excited teenagers. All three girls had the talent of giving a look that sent most running. After finding the seats, they settled in to enjoy the show. The two opening acts were short and sweet. Remo brought them the passes and told them to meet him at the entrance leading to the backstage before the encore. Melissa pointed out the Boys’ family members sitting in what she dubbed the VIP Section. Both Brian and Kevin’s girlfriends were there. The house lights went down and the crowd went nuts. Kat handed out the earplugs. The earplugs allowed them to cut out some of the high pitched screams and hear the music more clearly.
The Dancers and Band came out, and then the Boys flew over the audience on futuristic boogie boards. Katrina saw Nick and felt like all the oxygen left the room. He was in his element. Her eyes followed him to the stage. Once there the guys marched around the stage. The girls were on the side they came to last. AJ was standing in front of them gyrating. Melissa let out a scream and waved. AJ tilted his head and looked at the three of them. A smile spread across his face when he recognized them. He waved and got Howie's attention. AJ pointed at the three girls. Howie winked and wave. He said something to Kevin looked until he found them. He smiled then headed in the other direction as they all went to their different sides of the stage. Brian came bounding over to their side. The Boys were all working every part of the stage during “Larger Than Life”. Beth and Lissa both waved at him. He waved and started to move to a new spot, but then did a double take and gave them one of his patented Hellos. Nick wasn’t expecting Brian to still be there so he backed into him as he moved from another part of the stage. He turned looking at Brian who was pointing up into the audience. He glanced up not really looking at anyone thinking Brian was just doing his usual look at the crowd move. Brian took hold of Nick’s head and turned it. He then pointed directly at Katrina. Nick stopped singing as he stared at her. Brian nudged him. Nick looked at Brian and realized he wasn’t singing. He started singing as Brian walked away laughing. Nick then looked back up at Kat with what her sister had named The Awe shucks Smile before moving on. The other two did not miss the fact that Kat actually grabbed the seat in front of her.
For the remainder of the show Kat found it hard to watch anything but Nick. Nick for his part looked at her whenever he was on that side of the stage. Kat found herself disappointed when the boys flew out over the audience during QPG. AJ flew over them instead of Nick. Melissa on the other hand was ecstatic. Before the encore, the girls left their seats and made their way down to the floor, putting on their passes as they walked. They met Remo, who hurried them back to the Green Room. They felt uncomfortable because all the families and friends were gathered in the room. They stood off to the side until Katrina got tired of the stares.
“OK Sis which one is Brian’s mom?”
“She's there and that’s his dad,” answered Lissa with a nodded of her head.
“Come with me,” she ordered.
She crossed the room and introduced the three of them. She explained how they knew the boys and her purpose for being backstage. By the time the Boys walked in the Green Room, Kat was at a table surrounded by their family and friends.
Kevin said, “What are y’all looking at?”
“Hello Boo. We are looking at Katrina’s picture of the video shoot,” replied his mom, Ann Richardson as she hugged him.
“Cool! I wantta see,” said AJ as he bounced over to Melissa and threw an arm around her. “Hey Lissa.”
Melissa blushed and said, “Hi AJ.”
Brian and Nick came in the room pushing each other. Katrina looked up to see them. She froze. Nick was laughing as he looked at the table. His eyes locked with Kat’s. He had forgotten her eyes were that green. Brian pulled him to the table with Howie bringing up the rear.
“Hey ladies! Long time no see,” greeted Howie.
“Hi Howie,” came the reply times three.
“Hey Brian,” said Beth, as his girlfriend walked up and hugged him.
“Hello. What did y’all think of the show?”
The girls gave their reviews. Nick had remained quiet. Kat didn’t know what to say to him. She got up letting the family and friends finish looking at the pictures. She asked Remo where the closest bathroom was and then set about finding it. When she stepped back in the room everyone had broken into little groups. Friends and family surrounded Brian and Kevin. After all they were in their hometown. True to form Howie had family at the show. Beth and Melissa were talking to AJ, Remo, and Dennis Gallo, one of the band members.
Nick was sitting at the table going through her portfolio. She bit her bottom lip as she walked over to him. She chided herself for being so timid, because she was 24 years old and this was silly.
Taking a seat next to him, she asked, “So what do you think?”
“I think they're great. You are talented Kat. By the way, hi.” He looked into her eyes as he said hi.
Again Kat felt the oxygen leave the room. She said, “thanks and hi.”
They stared at each other for a moment, before Kat looked down at the portfolio. It was open to the last two pictures. They were of her. Someone had taken them while she was sitting in the waterfall.
“Well I didn’t take those two,” she started.
“I know. I did,” responded Nick.
“You?”
“Yep. You looked so peaceful. I thought it would make a great picture,” he trailed off.
“They are great pictures Nick. Wait that sounded egotistical. I didn’t mean it that way. I meant you took a good picture. You’re laughing at me.”
“No I’m…yes I am.”
“It’s OK. So how have you been,” asked Katrina.
“I’ve been good. You?”
“I’ve been.”
“Been what?”
“Just been.”
“Oh. Things better with your dad?”
“Define better,” she chuckled. “We are in standoff. He wants what he wants and I won’t give in. At least he finally let Melissa start working for him.”
“That’s good. What are you doing now?”
“Oh, I’m doing freelance work for three of the surrounding county newspapers as a photographer and I maintain the websites for two of the papers and my father’s firm.”
“I didn’t know you worked on web sites.”
“Yep. I built all three sites. It’s fun.”
There was a lull in the conversation. Both were unsure of what was going on. They wanted to stay in touch with each other, but feared being rejected if they brought it up.
Finally, Kat asked, “So are you leaving tonight?”
“Yep. We got in late last night so we are going on to the next stop.”
“I see,” Kat said as she looked down at the table.
“Can I ask a favor?”
“Sure.”
“Can I have two pictures out of here? For me and no one else.”
“OK. Which ones?”
Nick blushed and said, “One of these two of you at the waterfall.”
“Pick one,” replied Kat.
Nick looked at the two pictures and pointed to the one he wanted. Kat took the other picture out of the sleeve and pulled the sleeve out of the book. Nick then turned back through the book. She was surprised to see him stop on the picture of the two of them. It was taken right before they left to catch their plane. Kat and Nick’s bodies were facing with their arms wrapped around each other. They were looking at the camera, smiling with Nick’s cheek resting on the top of Kat’s head. They looked like they belonged together. Kat pulled the picture out and put it in the sleeve with the other picture. Nick smiled at her.
“Thanks Kat.”
“Your welcome Nick.”
Just then their tour manager came in saying it was time to go. Family members and friends took turns saying good-bye to the Boys; Kat, Melissa, and Beth included. Kat watched Nick put the photographs in his sketchbook and return it to his backpack. He swung the pack over his shoulder and walked back over to her smiling. With her portfolio in one had, she grabbed his hand with her other. They walked to the bus hand in hand.
Chapter 12
Katrina was standing outside the Pyramid Arena in Memphis, TN. She looked around thinking, ‘What a difference a couple of weeks make.’ She had walked with Nick to the buses in Lexington. He asked her for the addresses of the Websites she maintained. She had written the info on the back of her business card. Nick had emailed her the next day to compliment her on the sites. Kat bit the bullet and wrote him back. Over the previous two weeks they had emailed and chatted by phone and AOL instant messenger. Her mind wander back to the phone conversation two nights before.
“Hello”
“What’s wrong Kat?”
“Nothing Nick.”
“Katrina talk to me,” said Nick in a soothing tone. He waited and heard her sniff. “Why are you crying?”
“I’m not. Fine I am, but don’t worry about it. How are things going with you.”
“Damn it Katrina don’t change the subject.”
“Dad and I had another fight.”
“About?”
“I said I was thinking, just thinking, about going with Beth to New York.”
“James was really happy about that bit of news.”
“Oh yeah! He hit the roof. We yelled. He shut himself up in his study and I stormed up here as the phone rang. Now tell me what’s going on with you.”
Nick let her change the subject this time.
“Touring is touring.”
“Hey what are you doing for turkey day tomorrow?”
“We are having a big catered dinner for everyone.”
“Is your family going to be there?”
“Nope,” he said quietly.
“I’m sorry Nick.”
“I will be OK. You are still coming to the Orlando and Tampa shows right?”
“Yep. I wish I could get out of here sooner,” she trailed off. There was silence.
Nick said, “Why don’t you?”
“Why don’t I what Nick?”
“Get out of there sooner.”
“Do what? Go where? Melissa and Beth can’t go anywhere.”
“Meet us in Memphis.”
“What,” she exclaimed.
“That was my ear,” he said. “Kat come out. Bring your cameras and take pictures. Lissa and Beth can still meet you in O-Town.”
“I don’t know.”
“Think about it Kat. I will call you tomorrow night.”
“OK Nick I will think about it. I’m not making any promises.”
“I know. Night Kat.”
“Night Nick.”
She had thought about it, then mentioned it in passing the next day. Her father went so far as to forbid her from doing it. That made up her mind, she was going. Her father yelled and fussed. Her mother insisted they buy her plane ticket, because Kat originally said she was driving. She flew out of Lexington early Friday morning. Her thoughts were interrupted by the sound of the bus rounding the corner and the screams of about 50 teenage girls. Kat picked up her bags and started moving toward the backstage entrance. A local security person stopped her. She waited for the bus to stop. Nick saw her and got off the bus first. He yelled to the security guy to let her through. As she walked up he grabbed one of her bags and walked with her inside. Once inside, he took her hand. She smiled up at him. Nick could see she was tired like he was, but for a different reason.
He sat her bags in the dressing room with his stuff. Kat found a phone and called home to let them know she had arrived safely. Nick watched her face. He saw a tear slid down her check. He nudged Brian and motioned for him to look at Kat. Brian saw and quietly rounded up the other three. Kat noted she and Nick were alone when she hung up the phone.
“So everyone, but you, suddenly had to leave the room?”
“Sure.”
“Liar.”
“Yep. Now tell me why you are upset.”
Kat sighed and sat down on the couch next to him. She was losing the battle with her emotions. Nick saw big tears rolling down her cheeks. She was holding her breath as to not make any sound. She refused to look at him. He tried pulling her into a hug, but she remained stiff. He didn’t let go. Finally, she let go and cried. He held her while she quietly cried. After a few minutes she moved to look at him.
“Thanks. Sorry about getting you shirt all snotty,” she chuckled.
“You got it wet not snotty,” he countered.
“Well here let me fix that,” she said reaching for his shirt, acting like she was going to blow her nose.
“Hey now! Good to see you giggle.”
“I do not giggle.”
“Yes you do. Kat tell me what got you so upset?”
Taking a ragged breath, Kat explained her father had answered the phone. Once he heard her voice he handed the phone to her mother without speaking. He had never been this mad at her. She was hurt and mad at him too. He was being unreasonable. Kat was upset because she knew he was taking it out on her mom, sister, and anyone else handy. He didn’t hurt anyone, just yelled or gave them the silent treatment. Kat didn’t know how to fix this between them. She was becoming a woman and losing her father. Nick listened to her. He told her to give it time, because her father had to adjust to the changes. Nick knew from the brief encounter he had with James Morgan, he was a man use to having things his way. He loved his daughter and thought he knew what was best for her. Unfortunately, what he really wanted was to keep her close, to protect her. Nick admired Katrina’s strength. He knew she was scared of not making it financially, but she kept striving for her dream. He couldn’t imagine not having his family's backing.
“Thanks Nick for listening to me.”
Nick responded in a cute voice, “No problem.”
Kat smiled, “You are cute.”
“So are you,” replied Nick rubbing her nose with his.
They stared at each other for a moment. Kat’s heart sped up as she realized Nick was moving in to kiss her. She felt herself leaning in to meet his lips. Just before they kissed the dressing room door opened. They instantly looked at it.
“Whoops! Sorry, but they need you on stage Nick,” said Remo.
“Coming,” responded Nick. “Kat come watch sound check.”
“Let me wash my face.”
“OK. I’ll wait.”
They watched Kat walk over to the sink in the room. Nick walked over to stand with Remo at the door.
Remo quietly asked, “She OK?”
“She will be,” answered Nick in an equally hushed tone while watching her splash her face and dry it. He chuckled as he watched her blow her nose. She even looked cute doing that.
“Kat wake up! Can I go with your today?”
