Chapter 7
“I think they will turn out.”
“Ya gotten any bad ones of us,” he asked.
“I haven’t taken any of you.”
“Why not?”
“You are celebrities and your management would never let me take pictures of you without signing something to give them at least some control over how they were used. I’m not going to do anything with them, but I’m also not comfortable with giving someone else the right to use them as they see fit.”
“Shoot! I hadn’t thought about that Katrina,” interjected Mama Wilson. “And I so wanted pictures of these handsome young men to show off at my next bridge game.”
Everyone laughed. Nick watched Kat shake her head as she laughed. She looked at the older woman with such affection. Kat caught him looking at her and smiled.
Kevin spoke up; “I have an idea. Why don’t we write up our own agreement right here?”
Kat laughed again “And say what? That I won’t use your pictures without your permission and you won’t use them without mine?”
“Sure! Why not,” inquired Howie.
“I think that’s a splendid idea,” added Mama Wilson.
Kevin asked, “Fellas, do we all agree? Good. Katrina do you agree?”
“OK with one more stipulation. That this agreement is between us and your management has no say in how these pictures are used.”
Brian looked at the others for a consensus then said, “Agreed.”
Kat ran into the house and came back with a pin and paper. She wrote out the agreement and they all signed. Mrs. Wilson and the director signed as witnesses, then filming resumed. Kat walked around the perimeter and took shots of the guys and the crew. She caught them goofing between takes and picking on the director. Things were going well so the director gave them a two-hour dinner break. Kevin and Brian met family for dinner in Harrodsburg and took AJ and Howie with them. Nick said he wanted to hang out there and play his Nintendo.
“Hey there,” Nick said as Kat walked out of the Wilson house. He had traded his video clothes for tear-aways and a Bulls t-shirt and was sitting at the picnic table.
“Hey there yourself. Isn’t some video game calling your name?”
“I guess. What are you going to do?”
“I’m going to check on my horse and take Papa Wilson his Dakota. Wanna come?"
“OK,” he replied shyly.
They climbed into the Dakota and headed down the driveway taking the road to the breeding barn. They were quiet on the way over. Neither knew exactly how to start a conversation. They pulled off the road and drove back to a set of three barns, partially obscured by trees.
“Wow! The Wilson’s own all of this too,” asked Nick.
“Yep. All this land. The two barns on the left are where they keep the mares with foals and any horses that need to be watched. The barn on the right is where they keep the stallions.”
“Why is it bigger?”
“It’s divided into two sections. The main section is where they house the stallions and the smaller section is where they get to have their fun.”
“Oh,” replied Nick a slight blush coloring his cheeks.
Kat laughed, “Don’t worry I won’t take you in there.”
“Hey don’t laugh at me.”
“Aww Nick I’m sorry. You just look so cute with those pink cheeks. Now come on.”
Nick followed her inside thinking ‘She thinks I’m cute.’ They found Mr. Wilson. He said Raven and Oasis had a grand time and Raven was quite pleased with himself. Kat took Nick to the center barn to see Oasis. She then went to look at the Wilson’s new foal. She went into the stall and petted the mare. Soon the foal walked up and sniffed her. She let it get use to her. Reaching out she rubbed the foal’s neck and then hugged it. RJ Wilson joined Nick as he watched her.
RJ whispered, “That girls got the touch.”
“What do you mean?”
“She can walk out into a field of horses and within five minutes all the horses are around her. She doesn’t have to carry treats or whistle. She just calmly waits until she has their attention. She’s fearless with my stallions too. I’ve seen her walk into a stall with one of my most temperamental studs to get a kitten and come out untouched.”
“Cool.”
“So did you find any ghost last night?”
“I thought I did, but it wasn’t a ghost.”
“Who was it?”
“Her on Raven. She was in her night gown riding across the field.”
“Ah yes. Katrina and her father butt heads often. She said they had a go last night.” Mr. Wilson chuckled and continued; “I can just see her now. Stormin’ out of the house and being too stubborn to go back in to get her clothes.”
They changed the subject and talked about the farm. Papa Wilson noted how the young man’s eyes never left the girl in the stall as she talked and played with the foal. Saddling Raven, they led him outside. Kat handed the keys of the Dakota to Papa Wilson and hugged him. After mounting Raven, she extended a hand to Nick. He hesitated. She asked how else he expected to get back. He took her hand and she pulled him up behind her. RJ laughed as they rode off, because the young people looked uncomfortable being that close to one another. He had no doubts the two were smitten.
Chapter 8
The horse had been fighting her all the way home. He wanted to run, but she didn’t know how comfortable Nick would be with the idea. She also wasn’t sure how she would handle it. Having Nick this close with his hands lightly resting on her hips was making her feel different. She didn’t know if she could handle him holding her tighter and he would have to if she gave Raven free rein.
“Raven settle down,” scolded Katrina.
“What’s wrong,” asked Nick.
“Oh he just wants to run.”
“OK.”
“OK?”
“Yeah. OK. Let him run.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yep. I’ll just hold on tight,” Nick said as he pulled her against his body.
Kat leaned forward and took off the cap. She handed Nick the cap instructing, “Hold this and lean over my shoulder so my hair doesn’t beat you to death.”
Laughing Nick did as instructed and they were off. Nick tightened his grip more thinking she was made for him to hold. Kat was thinking it felt great to be in his arms. As they neared the Wilson’s house, she turned her head causing their cheeks to touch.
She said, “I’m going to drop you off at the Wilson’s and head home to eat and check messages.”
Nick without thinking said, “Can I go with you?”
He felt her smile against his cheek.
“OK. Hang on.”
“I’m not letting go.”
They passed the Wilson house. RJ had left the barn when they did and beat them to his house. He found his wife in the backyard. RJ and Betty Wilson watched them pass.
“You know woman I think we may have a match in the making.”
“I think you are right. Now she is 5 years older than him.”
“So? You are 4 years older than me.”
“I know dear.”
“Come in Nick. Let me run upstairs and check for messages. I'll come back and fix us something to eat.”
“OK,” he replied. He was standing in the kitchen area. He took a seat at the table at the side of the kitchen.
Upstairs Kat listened to her messages. Her best friend, Beth, called. A person from the Madison County Paper saying they wanted her to take photos of the street fair the following month. Dean, the dweeb at her father’s office called. She picked up her cell punching in Beth’s number.
“Beth’s House of Fun.”
“Hey Bitty.”
“Where have you been all day?”
“At the Wilson’s taking pictures.”
“Of what?”
“Video Shoot for,” started Kat, but was interrupted by a scream from the kitchen. “Crap!”
“What? Don’t you dare hang up,” ordered Beth. She could here Kat reach the steps and run down.
In the kitchen, Melissa Morgan stood hyperventilating with Nick trying to help her. James Morgan ran into the kitchen closely followed by his wife.
“Unhand my daughter,” he commanded.
Nick stepped back as Dana Morgan went to her daughter. James Morgan put himself between the intruder and his family.
“Get the hell out of my house!”
Nick attempted to explain, “But sir I…”
“I don’t care who you are. Get out of my house before I call the police.”
Kat rounded the corner as her father finished his threat. The sight was comical. First there was her mother forcing Melissa to bend at the waist to lower her head. Her father trying to look menacing and Nick. Poor Nick was pale as a ghost with his eyes as big as saucers and his mouth hanging open.
“Dad you will not call the police,” stated Kat matter of factly.
“Excuse me,” said her father as everyone but Lissa looked at her. Dana wouldn’t let her daughter up.
“Nick’s with me. I left him down here while I checked messages.”
“That’s neither here nor there. He did something to your sister,” her father huffed. “What Lissa? Dana let her up.”
Melissa stood up and her face was flushed, but she was breathing normally.
“I said he didn’t do anything to me. I just wasn’t expecting to see Nick Carter sitting in my kitchen so I screamed.”
“I thought you looked familiar,” said the girl’s mother. “I’m sorry Nick. I’m Dana Morgan and this is my husband James.”
“Who is Nick Carter,” bellowed her husband.
“The Backstreet Boys,” said Melissa looking at her father like he had lost his mind.
“The Backstreet Boys,” he muttered trying to remember. “Oh! The Posters on your wall!”
“Daddy,” cried a mortified Melissa.
Kat’s attention was drawn away from the conversation when she heard a muffled hello and realized she still had Beth on the phone.
“Sorry Beth, but…”
“Yeah, yeah I heard. Nick Carter. Melissa screams. Dad goes ballistic then embarrasses Lissa.”
“You got it. Beth I hate to do this…”
“But ya gotta go. I understand. Call me later. I want details.”
“You’ve got it. Later.”
Kat hung up the phone, looking at the four other people in the room. Her mother was talking to Nick while Melissa smiled shyly at him. Her father was looking at her.
“What,” she asked.
“Did Dean call you today?”
“Yes.”
“Did you say yes?”
"He left a message. Say yes to what?"
“Never mind. Just call him.”
“No and said yes to what?”
“He wants to take you to The Young Businessmen's dinner next week.”
“Not happening in this lifetime,” she snorted.
“Katrina, I want you to go with Dean. He is a perfect match for you.”
“No he is a perfect match for you father. You really don’t know me at all if you think we are a perfect match. Further more, I know what you are attempting to do.”
“And just what am I trying to do young lady,” James Morgan said in a controlled even tone. Unfortunately the redness of his face signaled how mad he was.
“You thought you could get me to agree to this, because Nick is here. You figured I wouldn’t put up a fight with a guest. A guest you threatened to arrest. I’m out of here. Come on Nick.”
Katrina grabbed Nick’s hand. As she reached the door she turned and faced her father. In a quiet tone that bubbled with anger she said, “I love you father. I really do. But stop trying to run my life. Mom, Lissa I will see you later.”
Having said that, she pulled Nick through the door before he could say anything.
Chapter 9
Nick learned that Katrina drove like she road with confidence and fearlessness. They were in her Toyota 4-Runner on the way back the Wilson’s. What was normally a 10 minute drive at the speed limit was going to take five minutes max. As they were turning into the Wilson’s drive Katrina slammed on the breaks.
“Crap!”
An alarmed Nick asked, “What?”
“You didn’t get to eat.”
“That’s OK.”
“No it’s not Nick. I’m so sorry.”
“I will just find something to eat here.”
“What do you want on your pizza?”
“What?”
“Your pizza Nick. What do you want on it? I’ll drive into town to Pizza Hut and get you one.”
“You’d do that for me?”
Kat looked into Nick’s blue eyes and said, “I can’t let you starve.”
“OK. I want a large thin crust cheese pizza. Let me give you some money.”
“No. It’s my fault you didn’t get to eat. I was going to feed you at the house at no charge.”
“Katrina I can’t let you do that.”
“To bad,” she said as they pulled around to the back of the house. “Now get out and go get ready before you get yelled at.”
“OK.”
Kat was back in an hour and a half. She explained to the director why Nick had not eaten and he agreed to give him a break. He would work on the other guys’ close-ups. She walked up to where he was standing with the other guys. Saying hi to the others she took his hand and led him into the house.
“I take it I get to eat now,” chuckled Nick.
Kat looked at his light colored suit and said, “In just a minute.”
She disappeared down the hall. Nick’s stomach growled when he smelled the pizza. He was in the livingroom. The pizza was sitting on the coffee table. He walked over and lifted the lid of the pizza box.
“I told you to wait,” scolded Kat.
“I’m hungry!”
“Take off your jacket. Sit…wherever you want. OK now let me wrap this around you.”
“Why,” asked Nick looking at the sheet she had unfolded.
“Because if you get anything on your suit they will yell at both of us.”
“Fine,” he sighed.
She draped the sheet over him, tucking it into the collar of his shirt. He grabbed a slice and practically inhaled it, reaching for a second piece. Kat disappeared again. She came back with napkins and two Cokes.
“Nick slow down,” she laughed. “You’ve scarfed down 4 pieces in less than 10 minutes.”
“I’m hungry. Get some. You paid for it and you haven’t eaten either.”
“Don’t have to offer twice.”
Kat picked up a piece and started eating. She watched Nick eat. He finished his fifth piece and got the sixth. This slice had more sauce on it and some of it got on Nick’s cheek. Nick was oblivious to it. Kat laughed because he looked so cute. He gave her a quizzical look.
“You’ve got sauce on your face.”
Nick licked around the outside of his mouth and asked, “Did I get it?”
“Not all of it. Oh here,” she said as reached over and wiped the sauce off with her finger.
As she pulled away he caught her wrist and put her index finger in his mouth. He licked the sauce off. He looked at her face to see her biting her lip. He let go of her hand, but didn’t break eye contact. She could get lost in his blue eyes. Mama Wilson clearing her throat interrupted their staring. They instantly blushed and looked down.
“Sorry to intrude but Nick they need you back outside. Your close-ups are the last ones.”
“Thanks Mrs. Wilson,” replied Nick. “Thanks for the Pizza Katrina.”
“You’re welcome Nick,” Kat responded quietly.
The older woman waited for Nick to walk outside before she spoke.
“You two seemed to be getting along.”
“Yes we are. Unfortunately, He got to see what my family is really like,” stated Kat.
She went on to tell Mama Wilson about the fiasco at her house. The older woman could picture the whole scene. She laughed until she cried. Kat excused herself to go out and see if they were done filming. Brian met her at the back door.
“Hey Kat. What’s going on?”
“Nothing much. Are you guys finishing up?”
“Yeah. Nick’s almost done.”
“Cool. Thanks for letting me hang out today.”
“No problem. You are coming back tomorrow right?”
“I hadn’t thought about it.”
“Ya gotta come back,” said AJ draping an arm over her shoulder. “When can we see the pictures?”
“I could go home and develop them tonight.”
“You have your own dark room,” asked Brian.
“Yes. I converted one of the rooms in our basement.”
“Cool,” exclaimed Brian and AJ.
“What’s cool,” asked Nick.
“Katrina has her own dark room.”
“Well guys I’m going to head home. I will be back in the morning with the pictures.”
“Night Katrina,” said AJ.
“Night AJ. Brian.”
“Night Katrina. Comin’ in Nick?”
“I’ll walk Kat to her car.”
“OK.”
Brian went inside and the other two walked to Kat’s 4-Runner. Kat opened the door and turned around. She wasn’t expecting Nick to be so close. She looked up at him.
“Thanks for letting me hang out today,” she said.
“Thanks for letting me hang out with you and for getting me dinner.”
“I’m sorry about my family.”
“Not a problem. Are you going to be OK when you go home,” he asked. She could see genuine concern in his eyes.
“Yeah. They should be in bed.”
“So I will see you tomorrow?”
“Yes. Can I ask a favor?”
“Ask.”
“May I bring my sister and my best friend Beth. I know Lissa will bug me. Beth can come and keep her out of trouble while I take more pictures.”
“Sure. Will Melissa scream again?”
“I’ll bean her if she does.”
“Well good night Katrina.”
“Good Night Nick.”
On impulse, Katrina wrapped her arms around Nick and hugged him. Nick was surprised, but hugged her back. They stood there for a moment holding each other under the moonlight. Both found it soothing. They let go and she climbed in the vehicle. Nick watched her drive down the driveway before going in.
The morning passed. Kat went around taking pictures of the crew, but avoided photographing the boys. She didn’t have a release signed from them and knew their management would have a fit. Besides she found it just as interesting to photograph the people working behind the scenes. When the crew broke for lunch, Mrs. Wilson made Kat join her at the Boys’ table. Mrs. Wilson sat at the head of the rectangle picnic table. Nick on her right and Kat on her left. Kat was introduced to everyone. As they ate AJ, who was sitting on the other side of Kat, asked her about the shots she was getting.
