Chapter 13
“Nick come here,” called Kat.
Nick trotted over asking, “What?”
“Did you really think I…was…was….a….a Ghost,” Kat howled.
“Brian,” cried Nick as he stormed off.
“Nick,” Brian called after him.
“Crap! I better go get him,” sighed Kat.
She had to run to catch up with him. She grabbed his hand and pulled him to a row of chairs. Making him sit, she dropped to her knees in front of him. He hung his head down, refusing to look at her.
“Oh Nick, don’t be mad. I’m sorry,” she said. Continuing when she didn’t receive a response, “I was laughing, because it was funny.”
Nick glared at her and spat out, “Hilarious!”
“Damn it Nick! I thought you were a ghost too!”
“What?”
“You heard me. You popped up from behind a tombstone in the middle of the night. My first thought was that’s a ghost. Followed by that ghost looks like Nick Carter, when you looked up at me.”
“I remember. Brian and I saw you tearing across the field. Brian went to bed. I stayed to see if you would come back. I gave up and decided to leave. I looked and there you were. You hair was wet and your body….” He trailed off as he looked at her body. Kat felt like he could see through her clothes.
She said softly, “um…Nick.”
He looked up and saw the blush on her cheeks. It was very becoming. She was again biting her bottom lip. He reached a hand up and gently stroke her cheek. Her skin felt like silk to him. He looked from her eyes to her mouth and lowered he head as he pulled her to him.
Brian cleared his throat and said, “They are ready to start boarding.”
“Great timing Frick,” Nick said.
“I’m sorry Frack,” replied Brian as he turned to leave.
“We should go,” said Katrina trying to get her heartbeat under control.
“Yeah,” sighed Nick as he ran his thumb over her bottom lip, before standing up.
He took her hand and they walked back to the gate. Once boarded, they sat together. Kat rested her head on Nick’s chest with his arm draped around her and he head resting on hers. They drifted off to sleep only to awakened when they landed in Orlando. Kat and Nick were staying at Brian’s house. It was easier for Nick than driving to and from Tampa for the concert in Orlando. Nick took his usual room and Kat took the other guestroom.
“Come in,” croaked Kat when a knock woke her.
“Morin’,” said Brian. “What time does Melissa and Beth’s plane get in?”
“12:54.”
“Um Kat? It’s 12 now.”
“What,” yelled Kat. “How long does it take to get there? How am I going to get there? I’ve got to get dressed. Ow! Brian why did you just do that shrill whistle?”
“Breath! Now I will take you. I will be waiting with the motor running. Get out to the car as fast as you can.”
“Thanks Bri. Now get out. I’m not getting dressed in front of you!”
She could hear Brian laughing all the way down the hallway. She grabbed clothes not caring if they matched. She was dressed and out the door in less than five minutes. Brian was amazed, because he had never met a girl who could accomplish that feat. She had him drop her off at the door. The plan was for him to circle around the airport and pick them up as he came back around. It was safer and faster than parking and coming in. Kat found her sister and best friend at baggage claim. They took one look at her and busted out laughing, because they knew what had happened. After getting their bags, she led them outside and into Brian’s car.
“Hello ladies,” Brian greeted.
“Hey Bri. I’m glad you came to pick us up,” replied Beth.
“Really Brian, we would still be waiting if it were left up to Kat.”
“Hush little sister. I haven’t brushed my teeth yet and I will breath on you.”
“So that’s how you got out of the house so fast,” laughed Brian. “Personal hygiene went out the window.”
“Hey Mister! I can breath on you too. Let’s just get back to your house. I promise I will take a shower and everything.”
“Thank the Lord,” stated Beth.
Chapter 14
“Ow,” yelled Nick. He was awakened by a sharp stinging sensation on his butt and female laughter.
“Get up lazy butt! Are you going to waste this whole day sleeping?”
Nick turned over to see Kat staring down at him. She was in a jade green silk robe. She was now using the towel she had popped him with to dry her curly hair. He saw her eyes sweep down his body as he lay on his back. He was wearing only boxer briefs. The sheet covered his lower half. He saw the smirk playing at her lips. He bent his legs to hide what she was smirking at.
“I’m up,” he said then blushed when she laughed. “What time is it?”
“It’s almost two. Come on. Lissa and Beth are already here.”
“OK. I’ll be down in a minute. Well go on,” he ordered.
Kat laughed as she left the room. Nick’s eyes watched her bottom sway until she was out of sight. He took a cold shower then joined everyone down stairs. The girls were going shopping while Brian and Nick met up with the other three guys to do interviews at O-town Arena. They were all to meet back at Brian’s house by 6:30 to go to the party being thrown in their honor at The House of Blues.
“So have you kissed yet,” asked Melissa.
“What? Who,” hedged Katrina as she looked through a rack of dresses.
“Don’t play dumb with us Missy,” countered Beth.
“No.” Kat drew out the word.
“You’re lying,” stated her sister.
“Lissa I am not.”
Beth interrupted, “But that’s not the whole story. Kat you’re blushing. I’m right. Spill it!”
“Fine! He’s started to kiss me twice, but Remo showed up the first time and Brian the second.”
“Oh Man! That bites,” exclaimed Melissa. “Well maybe he will try again tonight.”
“I doubt it. It was just a caught up in the moment thing both times.”
“Peeshaw,” said Beth. “That boy likes you.”
“That’s just it Beth! He’s only 19!”
“Let me finish. You like him too. Don’t deny it. I see how you watch him. I’ve seen the pictures you took of him that weekend."
“Beth don’t,” requested Kat.
“I’m sorry Sis, but she’s right. You do have a thing for Nick. Who cares if he’s only 19? I say if he doesn’t kiss you tonight. You kiss him.”
“Changing the subject now, what do you think of this dress,” asked Kat.
The other two rolled their eyes and knew it would do no good to debate it with her. They continued with their shopping. Each found something to wear. They beat the guys back to the house and began getting ready. Nick and Brian came tearing in the house at 6. It seemed they had stopped off to play a game of B-ball at their favorite park after the interview and lost track of time. They took quick showers and were getting dressed when Kat let Kevin, AJ, and Howie in along with Kevin’s girlfriend, Debbie, and Brian’s girlfriend, Tonya. Both girls were super sweet. The guys all greeted Melissa and Beth. Howie asked Beth to do him the honor of letting him escort her to the party. It seemed his girlfriend wasn’t getting in until later that night from New York where she was on a modeling assignment. AJ asked Melissa to keep him company that night at the party. As everyone made small talk, Brian came bounding down the steps carrying his shoes and socks with Nick closely following. Brian ushered everyone out of the house and into the waiting Limo. He locked up the house and climbed in the car. Everyone laughed as he finally put on his shoes.
They arrived at the House of Blues and saw the crowd outside. Everyone piled out of the Limo. Kat, Melissa, and Beth were unsure of what to do. Debbie said to follow her. They walked in leaving the guys to pose for pictures and sign autographs. They were led to a table set up for the Boys and their dates. A waitress took their drink orders as the guys came in the door. Kat looked at Nick in his Navy blue suit and light blue dress shirt underneath. He was wearing he glasses and his hair was slicked back. Except for the hair he looked great. He looked at her and smiled as he made his way across the room. Howie came over and pulled Beth onto the dance floor. AJ and Melissa soon joined them. Kevin and Debbie were talking to one their management people while Brian and Tonya talked with a local DJ. Nick saw Kat frowning at him.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
“Tell me or stop frowning at me.”
“All right. It’s your hair.”
“My hair? What’s wrong with my hair?”
“Well I like it slicked back, but with an off center part. Can I fix it?”
“OK.”
Kat reached up and began fixing his hair with her fingers. Her touch sent a shiver down Nick’s spine. Nick hair was still damp from his shower and the gel. Kat finished by pulling a few pieces of hair forward to fall down into his eyes. She looked through squinty eyes at him then smiled.
“Perfect! Now I will go wash this yucky gunk off my hands.”
“I’ll wait here for you.”
As Kat wandered off, Brian and Tonya came over to join Nick. They talked, but Nick’s eyes didn’t leave the bathroom door. Nick realized when Brian and Tonya blocked his view of Kat going to the bathroom that he had not really looked at Katrina. He didn’t want to miss the chance when she came back out.
“So I was just about to make a beau…” Nick trailed off. He was talking about the afternoon’s b-ball game with Brian and Tonya.
“Nick…Nick,” said Brian waving a hand in front of Nick’s face.
Tonya laughed, “Honey leave him alone. He’s has found something far more interesting than us.”
Tonya was right. Nick was watching Katrina come out of the bathroom. As she rounded the dance floor AJ grabbed her. She danced with AJ and her sister. She looked great. Nick had never seen her dressed up. She was wearing a little black dress with thin straps. It was simple which suited her. She had worn a tailored jacket over it to the club. Her hair was falling loose down her back like he liked it. She had just the right amount of makeup on to bring out her features.
Katrina was laughing at AJ’s gyrations with her sister when she felt someone tap her shoulder. She turned to face Nick. They started moving together. AJ and Melissa decided to take a break for something to drink when the song ended. Jennifer Lopez’s song “If You Had My Love” began. Nick took off his jacket and handed it to Melissa to take back to the table. Kat smiled and turned her back to him. He placed his hands on her waist and pulled her back against him. They danced as one. Not too far into the song Kat could feel Nick against her. She decided to turn around and face him thinking some distance would help the situation. She saw the look of disappoint on Nick’s face. As the song ended Kevin walked by saying the guys were needed for the presentation of the plaques. Like their previous US release, Backstreet Boys, Millennium had gone Diamond in the US. The presentation was made with the media present. The Boys posed for pictures and answered questions. Finally the press was ushered out and they could just enjoy themselves. Kat wished she had brought her camera to capture the moment, but oh well.
She watched Nick walk back to the table. Her heart did a flip-flop when he grinned at her. Suddenly a ballad came through the club’s sound system. Nick didn’t say anything. He merely took her hand and led her to the dance floor. She got lost in his eyes. If there were others on the dance floor, she couldn’t tell. All she saw was Nick. He pulled her close to his body. Her heart sped up. She closed her eyes and leaned her head against his shoulder. He leaned his head down and rested it against hers. He inhaled her scent. She smelled delicious. He nuzzled her hair. She tilted her head up and their lips actually touched, but suddenly Nick was pulled away. Kat blinked and looked at young girl with a vise grip on Nick’s neck.
“Nick I love you!”
“That’s nice. Can you let go? I can’t breath,” gasped Nick.
"Nick," exclaimed Kat.
"Excuse me I'm talking to him. Will you please go away," said the girl.
"What," asked Katrina.
"You heard me. You aren't needed here. Now go away!"
"I don't think so missy. Where are your parents?"
Marcus, one the guys bodyguards, walked up with the girl’s parents.
"What's going on Brandy," asked the girl's father.
"Brandy just got a little excited and had a choke hold on Nick," explained Kat. "But he's OK."
"Shut up. You're nobody," growled Brandy.
“Brandy! I’m so sorry for my daughter’s behavior. Are you sure you are OK?”
“Yes,” said Nick rubbing his neck.
“Brandy I am taking you home right now. Don’t open your mouth. March!”
The dejected teenager walked out of the club with her father. Kat checked Nick’s neck. It was red, but that would fade. They looked at each other and laughed. They were both thinking the same thing, so close. They went back to dancing.
The group got back to Brian’s at 2:30. Kat had changed into a light gray jersey camisole and shorts. She slid between the sheets. She assumed the knock at the door was either Beth or Lissa so she said come in. To her surprise Nick walked in. He crossed the room to the bed. Leaning down he kissed her then he was gone. Kat sat there for a moment in stunned silence. Suddenly she was out of the bed and in Nick’s room. Nick let out a gasp when Kat entered his room. He was in nothing but he boxer briefs. She pushed him to the bed and made him sit down.
“You can not just walk in a persons room, kiss them then leave.”
“I just was determined we were going to kiss. I was tired of the interruptions.”
“Yeah well too bad! Did you stop and think about what I would want?”
“Ahhh…”
“No you didn’t. On top of that you didn’t give me a chance to respond. You just hit and ran.”
“I’m sorry. I just wanted to kiss you so bad.”
“That’s right you kissed me. We didn’t kiss. I didn’t get to participate.”
“Fine Kat. I get the point! The kiss sucked.”
“Nick it didn’t suck. However, it wasn’t what it could be.”
“Oh Really! And what could it be?”
“This!”
Kat sat down straddling his legs and facing him. She gently pressed her lips to his. He didn’t respond at first. She took her tongue and traced the shape of his lips. With a quiet moan, Nick captured her mouth with his. They held each other tight. After a minute they broke the kiss. Kat smiled as she stood up.
“That’s how it should be. We both participate. Don’t you agree?”
“Oh yeah,” grinned Nick.
“Night Nick.”
“Night Kat.”
Nick again watched her backside as she walked out of the room. He couldn’t help but chuckle. This woman was a constant surprise to him. He once again was glad she was not a ghost.
Kat got back to her room and into bed before she breathed. She could still feel his mouth on hers and the feel of his body pressed against her. She could drink in his scent. She snuggled down in the covers and went to sleep with a smile on her face.
Chapter 15
By the light of day Katrina had convinced herself the kiss was a bad idea. She hid out in her room until Nick came looking for her.
“Come in,” she said hoping it was anyone but Nick.
“Morning,” greeted Nick as he walked over to kiss her. She turned her head and he got her cheek.
“Morning,” she replied.
Nick frowned, “You coming to breakfast?”
“Nope. I’ll be down later.”
“Kat what happened between last night and this morning?”
“Sleep happened. Now go eat breakfast.”
“Kat…nevermind,” Nick said walking out and slamming the door.
He stomped down stairs and into the kitchen where Brian and Tonya were eating.
“Hey Frack this is my house you stomping through.”
“Sorry Brian.”
Tonya kissed Brian and said, “I'll go talk to Katrina.”
Nick snorted, “good luck!”
Tonya and Brian exchanged a look. Brian smiled and turned to face Nick. As they began to talk, Tonya headed up the stairs and knocked on the guestroom door.
“Nick I said I will be down later.”
“It’s not Nick.”
“Oh. Hi Tonya.”
“Hello Katrina. Why are you and Nick in such bad moods?”
“So Nick’s really upset?”
“Oh yeah! Kat I realize I’m not Melissa or Beth, but I will listen if you need to talk.”
“We kissed,” stated Kat flatly.
Tonya hesitated, “and….what else?”
Kat told Tonya everything. Tonya was doubled up in laughter when Kat finished.
“Why is it that every time something like this happens between Nick and I people find it funny?”
Tonya wiped the tears from her eyes and said, “I’m sorry Kat, but you two are too funny.”
“Gee thanks.”
“Kat is Nick that bad a kisser?”
“No!”
“Then what is the problem?”
“Well try we live two completely different lives. Try we just really met. And most importantly, I’m 5 years older than him.”
“First when anyone starts a relationship they have completely different lives. You work at meshing the two. Secondly, you have known each other for a while. I was surprised to hear last night was the first time you had kissed. Then you told about the aborted attempts which was funny as hell. Finally, let you in on a secret. I’m 3 years older than Brian.”
“Really?”
“Really! I understand your apprehension, but Kat give it a chance. I know Nick likes you. He’s a good guy.”
“I know. Oh man! Now I have to go apologize.”
“Yes you do. I will send Nick up,” laughed Tonya.
“Tonya?”
“Yeah?”
“Thanks.”
“Anytime.”
Kat sat on the bed and waited for Nick. It took some convincing on Tonya’s part and threatening on Brian’s, but Nick eventually went up to see Katrina. He hesitated outside the door. Did he really want to give her a chance to explain? Kat was going nuts. Finally, she gave up and went in search of Nick. Luckily she only had to open the door.
“You wanted to see me?”
“Yeah Nick I did.”
“You see me.”
“Come in and sit down.”
“Just talk.”
“Fine. I got scared.”
“Why?”
“Because I’m 24 and you are 19.”
“I don’t care!”
“I know. I just wasn’t prepared for you. OK? I never saw you coming. I don’t know where this is going. Hell I don’t even know where my life is going.”
“Kat why are you trying to solve everything? Why can’t you just be here with me? Everything will take care of itself. Promise.”
“All right Nick. I will try to not worry about everything so much. So what are we doing?”
“Right now we are going down and eat something.”
“Wait! Why haven’t you eaten?”
“Honestly you made me too upset to eat.”
Kat’s eyes started to tear up as she hugged him saying, “Oh Nick I’m so sorry.”
“It’s OK. I’m just glad we got this straightened out.”
“Me too.”
“Kat?”
“Yes Nick?”
“Can I have the good morning kiss I came in for earlier?”
Kat smiled and leaned up to offer him her lips. He lowered his head and gently kissed her. They then turned and headed down the stairs arm in arm. Brian and Tonya smiled at them as they entered the kitchen. The four of them talked while Nick and Kat ate. The boys played basketball while the girls watched. Soon it was time for the guys to head to the arena for sound check. The girls were going to the hotel to pick up Melissa and Beth. They had been enjoying the Florida sun by the hotel pool. Brian rode with Nick to the arena so Tonya and the girls would have something to ride in. They loaded all of their gear in Brian’s BMW. Kat, Lissa, and Beth had originally planned on staying in Tampa or heading to Miami after the last concert. Nick had offered to let Kat, Lissa, and Beth stay at his house in Tampa. They were heading out right after that night’s concert.
As soon as Nick saw Katrina backstage he bounded over and kissed her. She laughed when she saw her sister and best friend’s expressions. She hadn’t told them about the latest events in the Nick and Kat drama. Nick was pulled away for makeup. Kat grabbed her camera and headed outside to the front of the venue. She walked around taking pictures of the crowd. She had just finished taking a picture of a mother and her eight-year old daughter, when she felt a tap on her shoulder. She turned to face a teenager with a very sour look on her face.
“May I help you,” asked Katrina.
“Whose girlfriend are you?”
“What?”
“Duh! Which Backstreet Boy do you date? Cause I saw you drive in with Brian’s slut of a girlfriend.”
“Excuse me, how old are you?”
“14, so?”
“So, do your parents know you have that mouth on you?”
“Shut up and answer my question.”
“That statement contradicts itself but to answer you, no one. I am friends with all the guys.”
“I believe you, because they would never go out with someone as ugly as you.”
Kat shook her head and turned to leave. It was better to just walk away from the situation. Suddenly she heard her name being called. She turned to see her sister standing in one of the doors of the main entrance to the arena.
“What Lissa?”
“Come back in. Nick is looking for you. His whole family just got here and he wants to introduce you.”
“Coming,” responded Kat. Suddenly she was spun around to come face to face with the same girl.
“You lying Bitch. If you think you are going to get my Nicky you are mistaken. You keep you dirty, slutty hands off my man,” she screamed as she threw the Coke she was holding in Kat’s face.
Kat, on instinct, when spun around had put her camera behind her back. So while she was covered with Coke her camera was safe. Melissa watched from the door. She recognized the look on her sister’s face and knew it wasn’t good. As Kat stared at the girl a woman walked up.
“What’s going on here? Kathy?”
Kat turned to the woman and asked, “Is this your daughter?”
“Yes it is. May I help you?”
“Yes you can. Will you and your daughter accompany me inside?”
The woman looked puzzled, but said, “OK.”
Kat looked around her and saw a girl about the same age as Kathy. She had an ‘I can’t believe she just did that’ look on her face. Kat asked her, “Did you see everything that just happened?”
“Y-yes.”
“Good. Who are you with?”
The girl pointed to her friend.
“OK will all four of you follow me?”
Kat didn’t wait for a response. She turned and headed inside. Melissa watched her sister stride purposefully through the arena to the backstage area with the little group following along behind. She didn’t slow or stop until she found everyone. She walked over to Nick and his family. Nick started to introduce her, but she stopped him. She apologized and asked his brothers and sisters leave for a moment. She said she would explain everything in a minute. Nick took one look at her covered in some kind of liquid and at the people standing by the door with Melissa. He did as she asked. When everyone but the boys, their girlfriends and families had exited the room, Kat began to explain.
“I went outside in front of the building to take pictures of the fans waiting to get in. This young girl, Kathy, approached me. Kathy I would like you to meet the Backstreet Boys and this is Tonya, Debbie, Connie, my sister Melissa, and my best friend Beth. By the way I’m Katrina. Now back to the story. Kathy had some question as to which Backstreet Boy I was dating. It was at this point she mentioned seeing me arrive with….oh Kathy, what was the colorful term you used for Tonya?”
“I don’t remember.”
“Sure you do. Well I’m sorry what is your name,” asked Kat turning to the girl she had asked to come along.
“I’m Amber,” she responded shyly.
“I’m her friend Tammy,” offered the girl with her.
“Hello Amber and Tammy. Amber would you please tell them what you heard?”
“I don’t use words like that,” she said.
Tammy said, “I don’t either, but I will repeat what she said because they need to hear it. She called Tonya Brian’s slutty girlfriend.”
“Kathy! Please tell me you didn’t do that,” cried her mother.
“I’m sorry but she did,” stated Amber.
“I explained to her that I was not dating any of you.”
Amber interrupted, “And Kathy told her she was too ugly to date any of you.”
“Kat tell them how you got the coke on you,” prompted Melissa.
Katrina continued, “Lissa called to me. She said you were looking for me Nick and wanted to introduce me to your family. I turned to go in when she stopped me.”
Tammy spoke up, “Yeah. Kathy called her a lying bitch and told her to keep her slutty hands off her man.”
Kevin asked, “Who’s her man?”
Amber and Tammy replied in unison, “Nick!”
“Me,” squeaked out Nick.
“That’s what she said and she threw her drink on Katrina,” finished Amber.
“What’s wrong Kathy,” question Kat. “Oh I’m sorry. Is this not how you thought your first meeting with Backstreet would be? See I knew it would do no good to yell at you or make a scene out there. It was far more effective to bring you in here and in front of them, your mom, their girlfriends and family, and have what you said brought to they’re attention.”
“Young lady we are leaving, but first you apologize,” stated the girl’s mother.
“Mom,” wailed Kathy.
“You heard me. You apologize then I’m taking you home. You are grounded for the next month.”
Kathy started to cry and said, “I’m sorry.”
Her mother spoke, “I’m sorry too. I apologize for my daughter’s behavior. We will be leaving now.”
“Kathy before you go,” said Kat. “I accept your apology, as I’m sure everyone else does. Also I want to ask one thing of you. Next time you start to say something mean to someone stop and think. Remember this moment.”
Kathy nodded and followed her mother out. The room was quiet for a moment. Then Brian started howling with laughter. Everyone turned to him with questioning expressions.
“Kat you have a knack for getting parents to take home their ill mannered children. You are now two for two.”
“I’m not proud of that, but they have to realize they are dealing with human beings.”
“Excuse me. Can we go now,” asked Amber. She and Tammy looked lost in this room full of essentially strangers.
Nick asked, “Girls where are your seats.”
“In the noise bleed section at the back of the arena,” replied Tammy.
Nick looked the others and they all smiled.
“Well not anymore,” said AJ. “You have just been upgraded to sitting with our families. Remo can you get them some passes.”
“Why are you doing this,” asked Amber.
Kevin answered, “Because you told the truth and you are the kind of fans we want.”
The girls thanked them. AJ and Howie continued to talk to the girls. Nick walked over to Kat as his brother and sisters came back in the room. He led her over to his family and introduced her. She blushed and apologized for the scene she created. They laughed. Nick’s dad told her he liked her spunk. They talked for a few minutes. When it was time for the Boys to warm up, Nick took Kat to the dressing room and gave her one of his shirts. After he left she washed the sticky liquid off and put on the shirt. She joined the group in time for the prayer and chant. Amber and Tammy were in heaven. They all headed to their seats as the guys headed for the stage. The concert was great. The guys had the best time.
Afterwards, Amber and Tammy said goodbye to everyone. Nick, Kat, Lissa, and Beth piled into his Durango and headed to Tampa. Once they arrived, Nick showed them to their rooms. Everyone turned in for some much needed rest.
Two days later, Katrina and Brian were sitting and talking while they waited to board the plane taking them from Knoxville to Orlando. They were in the section of the airport reserved for passengers of private planes. Backstreet had finished the concert an hour before. Nick had wandered off to find a bathroom and then stopped to talk with Tommy Smith, one of their keyboard players.
