Chapter 49
“Nicky don’t whine,” teased Howie.
“I’m not!”
AJ chuckled, “ Yeah ya are.”
“Fine!”
“OK guys leave Nick alone. He just got his girl back,” chided Tonya.
There was a knocked at the door. They were all waiting for Kat in the private lounge of the hotel. Once she arrived they were off to the American Music Awards. Nick had his back to the door. He was fidgeting in his black Dolce & Gabana suit. Kevin opened the door. Nick turned when he heard Kevin whistle. Katrina stepped in the room laughing. Nick’s mouth dropped open. Her hair was down and tousled just like the night before. She had on a beautiful jade green silk gown with tiny straps. The neckline draped low across her breast. He could see enough to know the straps criss-crossed low in the back. She was wearing the diamond necklace and earrings he had given her.
AJ put an arm around him and said, “Little man I now know why she didn’t let you stay while she got dressed.”
“Why,” croaked Nick never taking his eyes off her.
“Because,” finished Brian. “You two would never make it to the awards. You would have attacked her on the spot.”
“I still might.”
“Not with us around,” said Kevin’s girlfriend, Debbie.
“Hello everyone. Anyone home,” laughed Katrina.
“Yes. Now can you all please pull yourselves together so we can leave,” teased Connie, Howie’s fiancée.
“Let’s go,” directed Brian.
The group headed to the limos and 45 minutes later was pulling up to the red carpet. Nick had not said much, only stared at Kat. They all got out and were immediately blinded by flashes. The ladies all stepped to the side and let the press get the shots they needed. Brian stayed on the side never letting go of Tonya’s hand. He was very protective of her and the baby. They made it to the seats, just as Rosie O’Donnell came out for the beginning of the show. Katrina spotted Love, Jennifer, Sean, and Beth in the audience. Beth agreed to come with Love. They were making it a girl’s night out.
Everyone was disappointed when BSB lost best pop group to Sugar Ray. Katrina squeezed Nick’s hand causing him to smile at her. More than halfway through the ceremonies, the guys were asked to come backstage to prepare for their performance. Nick stood to leave. He leaned down and kissed Katrina softly.
Katrina could hardly sit still when Rosie was announcing them. They took the stage and rocked the place. Their vocals were dead on as were their dance moves. Katrina couldn’t help it, when they finished she let out a yell. Nick looked right at her and winked. The guys were still backstage when it was time for the final award of the evening, Best Album. Love was presenting with the lead singer of SmashMouth. They read off the names of the nominees. Katrina was praying so hard.
“So Jennifer why don’t you tell them who won?”
“I will. The award for Best Album goes to…. The Backstreet Boys!!!!”
All the ladies were on their feet cheering. The guys came running out on stage. They each shook hands with the lead singer of SmashMouth and gave Love a kiss.
Howie spoke first, “Wow! We can’t believe this is happening. First we want to thank God for blessing us in more ways than we ever thought possible.”
He stepped aside for AJ, who said, “Thanks go out to our families and loved ones. They put up with our crazy lives. Love you all.”
“We want to thank our fans. Even though we say it every chance we get you still have no idea how you have changed our lives. I also want to thank my wife Tonya. Baby you have always been there for me. You have given me so much. I thank God for you and the child you are carrying every day,” said Brian.
Kevin continued, “We also have to thank our management team, The Firm; our record company, Jive Records, everyone at the fan club. Help me out here fellas…”
Nick took a deep breath then stepped up the mic, saying, “We want to think Fatima Robinson, our band, the dancers, our bodyguards – you’ve saved our butts some many times guys, and all our crew. Oh and anyone we forgot. Finally, I want to thank my fiancée, Katrina. God gave me such a gift when he let you walk into my life. Having your love has made me a better man. I love you Kitten.”
Tears streamed down Kat’s face as she watched Nick walk off stage. She didn’t care that a camera was filming her every move. They couldn’t spoil this moment for her. Nick making this very public declaration made it all become real.
She turned to Tonya, saying, “I’m going to marry that man.”
Tonya giggled, “Yes, I know.”
Kat could only say, “Wow!”
Marcus escorted the ladies to the limos. They waited for the guys to finish in the pressroom. After about 30 minutes the guys piled in and they were off to the after parties. They went to the Bad Boy Records party. Sean and Jennifer had both won awards and were holding court over the crowd. Love and Beth were flirting up a storm with all the eligible bachelors. Everyone danced and had a great time. Tonya was tired so she and Brian ducked out early. Nick and Katrina decided to head out with them.
After goodnights were said, the two couples were in the limo, heading for the hotel. Tonya was just beginning to show. Brian was whispering in her hear while rubbing her tummy. Nick watched them while Kat watched him. Finally, he looked at her and pulled her back against his chest. He gently kissed the back of her neck causing her to shiver.
Katrina leaned her head back and whispered, “What are you thinking?”
“I’m thinking about when you are carrying our child.”
“You are,” smiled Kat.
“Yep. I want to rub your tummy like that,” He said, while doing just that.
“I want that to Nick.”
“Good. However…”
“Yes?”
“Right this very minute I want to get you back to the room and get you out of that dress.”
“Really now. What else do you want?”
“I want to be inside you.”
“Excuse me but we are in here with you,” chided Brian.
“Shut up dear. I am feeling pretty much the same way,” said Tonya.
“How’s that baby,” asked Brian.
“I want you inside me.”
“That’s it let’s all go back to our own little whisper worlds,” giggled Kat.
“Done,” said Nick before kissing her.
The drive laughed when he opened the door to find both couples kissing. They were oblivious to everything.
Chapter 50
The following morning, Katrina stepped out of the shower in time to hear Nick slam down the phone. She grabbed at towel and she stepped out of the bathroom. One look at Nick’s face told her how mad he was.
“Nick?”
“I’ll be back in a minute,” Nick said as he left the room.
Katrina threw a pair of Nick’s sweats on and one of his T-shirts. This was one of those time she was glad Nick left his clothes lying everywhere. She walked out into the hallway and saw Nick standing in the doorway of Brian and Tonya’s room at the other end of the hall. She could hear Brian yelling before she ever reached the door. Now this was not normal for Brian. Nick was known for his temper, but Brian was always a fairly easy-going guy.
“I don’t give a damn. This conversation is over,” yelled Brian before slamming down the phone.
“Baby what happened,” asked Tonya.
She was by the door she had opened when Nick knocked.
“I can’t believe him!”
“I see when I hung up he called you.”
“Yes. So they don’t like the announcement you made,” stated Brian.
“Nope, but why are they calling you about it,” asked Nick.
“Oh it wasn’t about your announcement. He was calling about my announcement.”
“Huh,” said the other three in the room.
“Hey guys what’s up,” asked AJ, poking his head in.
“AJ go get Kevin and Howie,” requested Brian.
“I’ll get Howie, but I don’t know about Kevin. He’s still asleep.”
“Do it,” said Nick
AJ knew something major was up so he didn’t argue. He reappeared in less than five minutes with the last two group members and significant others in tow. Tonya, Katrina, Debbie, and Connie leaned against a wall while the guys all sat down.
“What’s going on,” asked Howie.
“Nick you start. I’m too mad to talk right now,” said Brian.
“I get a call this morning from Scott. He wanted to discuss my announcement last night.”
Kevin interrupted, “What announcement?”
“That I was engaged.”
“OK. So? They made that announcement when you first got engaged.”
“Well apparently Scott is the one who leaked that Kat and I broke up. He is mad that I didn’t inform them. He apparently had just told people that we were finished. He now has egg on his face. Plus he really hoped I had gotten this out of my system. After all it isn’t good for the group.”
“What,” exclaimed AJ.
“You heard right,” replied Nick.
“What did you say,” asked Howie.
“Nothing I just hung up, which gave him a chance to call Brian.”
“Brian? Why did he call Brian,” asked Kevin.
Brian spoke, “Because I made an announcement too.”
“OK where was I when this was done and why don’t I remember,” pondered Kevin.
“It was at the same time. I mentioned the baby in my thank you.”
Kevin smacked his head and said, “That’s right. Man I hate when shit hits the fan before I’m fully awake.”
Howie spoke up, “Brian why do they have a problem with that? You guys are married.”
“First of all, Scott didn’t like being blindsided a second time. Secondly, he said it is bad timing for the group. It will cost us fans.”
The women were taking this all in. Katrina glanced at Tonya, who was standing next her looking very pale.
She whispered, “Tonya are you OK? Tonya?”
Tonya didn’t respond.
“Um guys…Brian!”
“What Kat?”
“Tonya is not looking good. Come help me get her to the bed. She needs to sit down.”
“Tonya,” exclaimed Brian as he rushed over. Sweeping her up into his arms he carried her to the bed.
“Tonya I need you to lean forward and put your head between your knees,” said Kat.
Tonya nodded and did as she was told.
“Has she eaten yet this morning?”
“No we were heading out for breakfast when I got the call.”
“OK Debbie go get some OJ and a bagel or something.”
“Got it.”
“Connie get a cool wash cloth.”
“OK”
“Tonya are you better? Good now lay down here for me.”
“Tonya baby are you OK,” asked Brian.
“Oh Brian,” exclaimed Tonya as she started to cry. “I’m ruining your career.”
“You are not.”
“Am too. Maybe the baby and I should go somewhere.”
“Go somewhere! Tonya what are you saying? Do you want to leave me?”
“No,” wailed Tonya. “I just don’t want to cause you problems.”
“Tonya why are you saying these things? I expected you to be mad, but not like this.”
“Hello Mr. Man,” said Connie as she placed the wash cloth on Tonya’s head. “She pregnant! Her hormones are out of whack.”
“OH! Baby listen to me. I’m not letting you go. I love you and our baby. Nothing else matters.”
“Really?”
“Really.”
“Oh Brian!!!”
This opened the tear floodgate even more. Debbie returned with the OJ, a bagel, a doughnut, and toast. She said she was being thorough. Everyone laughed. Tonya ate the bagel and drank the OJ as the guys discussed how they were going to handle this latest crisis with their management. They were scheduled to tape an interview with Dateline. The news show wanted to focus on how they had evolved. They decided to use this as the forum for clearing all this up. The impromptu meeting broke up and everyone headed back to their own rooms.
“Kat did you grab the room card?”
“Um nope. Did you?”
“Um nope.”
“OK which one of us is going down to the front desk?”
They looked at each other and started to laugh. Nick had been so mad he went to Brian and Tonya’s room in nothing but his boxer briefs. Kat was having a hard time keeping Nick’s sweats up. She had grabbed a pair with just an elastic band. AJ had followed them out into the hall and heard the exchange.
“Guys ya want me to go down and get it for you?”
“Would AJ?”
“No. Teasing! Yes. Be back in a second,” he replied as he headed for the elevator.
“Thanks Bone.”
Katrina asked, “Nick which house are you going to let them film?”
“Huh?”
“Dateline, they are wanting footage of your homes. Are you going to have them film in Tampa or LA?”
“You know I bought a house in LA?”
“Nick it was all over the net and before you ask, I did keep up with what you were doing. I had to know you were OK.”
“Well damn it I wasn’t OK. I came home and you weren’t there, but you were still everywhere in the house. I went to LA to see my family, but also to get away from your memory in that house. I decided that until I got you back I would rather live somewhere else. Mom and Dad convinced me to move out there so I would close to all of them.”
“I understand Nick. I’m sorry I took your home away from you. How is everyone with us being back together?”
“They are happy. BJ said it was about time.”
“Several people have said that,” laughed Kat.
“What about James and Dana?”
“They are fine. They were pissed with you at first, then me, because I wouldn’t make-up with you.”
Nick laughed, “Good!”
“Fine,” chuckled Kat. “Now back to my question, which house?”
“Easy Tampa. It’s our home.”
“Does this mean you expect me to move back?”
“Don’t tease. You know I do.”
“Good answer.”
“We will work that all out later.”
The elevator doors opened to reveal AJ. He said, “I forgot.” The doors closed then reopened. “Joke!”
“Cute Bone,” said Kat.
“Not as cute as you trying to keep Nick’s clothes on.”
“Down Bone,” said Nick.
“Down,” replied AJ.
AJ handed the key card to Nick then kiss Katrina on the cheek before jogging down the hall to his room. Katrina and Nick laughed as they walked in the room. They got dressed and packed up Nick’s stuff. They were going to Katrina’s and stay a few days before heading to Tampa to get things ready for the crew from Dateline.
Chapter 51
Kat whispered, “I feel like I’m on the Real World or Road Rules.”
“I know,” replied Nick.
“Would you two please speak up,” said the soundman.
“Sure,” answered Nick.
Katrina and Nick were eating breakfast on the deck, which was normal. However, having the Dateline crew filming was not. The producer from Dateline had been following each member of BSB around for some day in the life footage. Nick was the last Boy. They were awakened at 6:30 that morning by the doorbell and barking dogs. It was now 8am and the crew had just started filming. After breakfast, the couple took the dogs to the park and played with them. It was a sight to see Nick Carter, his fiancée, 5 dogs, and a film crew running around the park. No wonder people stared. They had to leave when the third car of teenage girls pulled up screaming.
Back at the house, the crew wanted a tour, then while Stone Phillips did a short interview with Nick; Katrina worked on updating the websites she still ran. She disappeared for awhile, but returned with enough lunch for the entire crew. Nick kissed her goodbye after lunch and headed to his meeting with the guys. They were in the early planning stages for a New Years Day TV special.
Later that evening, Katrina joined Nick for dinner. The producer had requested they do dinner together with the rest of BSB and Stone Phillips. They had a private dinning room reserved. Each Boy had his significant other with him. AJ even brought a date. As cliché as it sounded they had met at his favorite McDonalds. Jena was a third year student majoring in psychology. She was different for the other girls he had run through over the years. She looked like a normal college girl. She also looked at AJ adoringly. The dinner went off without a hitch.
The following day BSB met at their Fan Club Offices to finish the interview. They were open and honest about their lives. Stone Phillips was impressed with them. He had expected them to be very cagey about their personal lives. After all personal lives were the kiss of death to groups like this. Then again he had to admit they had sidestepped all the other pitfalls of being a boy band.
Once dateline was sent on its way, life went back to routine. Katrina and Nick started planning their wedding. Kat was also in on the planning of Tonya’s baby shower. They wanted to do the shower before Howie and Connie’s wedding and the guys went back out on the road in the fall. Nick and Kat’s wedding would be in the spring sometime.
They spent the summer together and it was the best time of their lives. Nick finally got to show Katrina Key’s. They got away for a weekend. She did short assignments for Notorious. They visited both their families. Life was good. The only trying time came when The Firm’s contract with the Boys came up for renewal. The company had managed to get a one-year extension on the agreement the previous year. However, Scott had really over estimated his pull with the Backstreet Boys. The guys had met and decided to look elsewhere. In the interim, Denise McLean would handle booking the fall tour and act as tour manager.
Nick hated this part of his job. He and AJ usually left this stuff up to their mom’s and the other Boys. The one thing he insisted on was there not be a fruit basket turnover of people connected to the Firm like had happened with the last management change. The others agreed. Kat was proud of him and the band, for one, breathed a sigh of relief.
Katrina had volunteered their house for the Baby Shower/Surprise Bridal Shower. Nick grumbled good naturedly about all the girlie things she was making him hang up in the livingroom. Secretly he couldn’t wait until they had a reason for a baby shower.
“Do I really have to leave,” asked Nick.
“Yes!”
“But Kat I won’t come in. Promise.”
“No way mister. Your job along with Kevin and AJ is to keep Brian and Howie company while we party.”
“OK,” said Nick pretending to be hurt, but he couldn’t help smiling.
“See I knew you really didn’t want to stay.”
“Well Brian made me promise I would try to convince you then he would be able to stay too.”
“Not happening,” chuckled Kat as she pushed Nick’s hair out of his eyes.
She turned and headed into the kitchen. The food was laid out and she was getting the baby motif napkins out. Nick walked up and peered over her shoulder. He placed his hand on her stomach and started to rub it. He had been doing this more often as Tonya’s due date got closer. Kat knew he wanted children. She did too, but they needed to get married first. She would not forsake that part of tradition. She wanted a husband before a baby.
Later in the evening after all the ooh’s and ah’s over the baby shower gifts, the girls then surprised Connie with her bridal shower. She got some fun things for her and Howie to play with as well as things she had registered for at local stores. Of course, the three girls that were attached to the other Backstreet Boys were then grilled about when they were getting married and having kids. Katrina and Debbie put their foot down when the firing squad began grilling Jena. She had only been dating AJ for a few months. Yes it was one of his longest relationships, but they insisted everyone stop putting pressure on them.
After everyone had gone home, Katrina and Nick cleaned up then headed to bed. As they lay in bed, Nick pulled her close.
“Kitten I’ve been thinking.”
“Really?”
“Shut up.”
“OK. What have you been thinking about?”
“What you would like to name our children?”
“Hmmm…for a boy…I like the name Nickolas.”
“OK, but I don’t want that to be his first name. Then you have the big Nick, little Nick thing going on.”
“All right. How about Andrew Nickolas?”
“Andrew Nickolas…maybe just maybe.”
“So what about a girl’s name,” asked Kat.
“Lyric Renee?”
“Maybe.”
Nick laughed, “OK you don’t like it.”
“I didn’t say that Nick. Anyway you said maybe to Andrew Nickolas.”
“True. Well we have time.”
“Yes we do, but Nick?”
“Yes?”
“How do you feel about me not taking birth control pills after we get back from our honeymoon?”
“You serious?”
“Yep.”
“Me likes!”
“I can’t believe she wouldn’t let me stay there while she got ready.”
