Chapter 43
“Thanks Remo. Stories seem to travel fast.”
“Faster than you know. Kat what’s going on?”
“Nothing inappropriate if that’s what you are asking. Remo don’t tell you believe this crap.”
“Well it was strange, what with you not calling and everything.”
“Remo I called. I never got Nick. I always got Patty.”
“Really? Hmmm…well Nick doesn’t know that.”
“What do you mean?”
“Well…” Remo was interrupted.
“Katrina? What are you doing here,” asked Patty Johnson, the production assistant on the tour.
“Where’s Nick,” asked Katrina.
“The guys are in a press conference right now.”
“Where at?”
“In the arena, but you can’t go out there.”
“Watch me,” hissed Katrina as she pushed past the other woman.
Remo caught up with her and said, “This way.”
“Thanks Remo.”
Remo lead her through the corridors and to the entrance of the arena. She could see the guys surrounded by press. Kat decided to not make her presence known until after the press were done. Suddenly, Patty was standing by her.
“You didn’t have leave me standing there,” snipped Patty.
“Do you have Nick’s phone,” asked Kat.
“Yes,” replied Patty, then mentally kicked herself.
“May I have it?”
“Nick gave it to me, so I will hang on to it.”
“Patty, we’ve met only once, on the day you all left to start this tour. Let me re-introduce myself. I’m Katrina Morgan, the fiancée of Nick Carter. I believe that entitles me to have his phone. I suggest you give it to me. I want his phone, so give it to me.”
“You can’t talk to me like that,” said a shocked Patty.
Kat leveled a gaze at the woman before her and said, “Patty give me the phone or I will be forced to become a bitch. You can’t handle me in bitch mode.”
The woman looked from Kat to Remo and back at Kat. Kat took a step toward her, prompting Patty to reach in her pocket and produce Nick’s phone.
“Smart girl. Now go away,” stated Katrina, annunciating the words clearly.
Patty disappeared and Katrina went back to watching the press conference. Nick looked tired and unhappy. As the interview wound down, Brian spotted Katrina. He did not acknowledge it. He didn’t want the reporters pouncing. Also he didn’t what them witnessing Nick’s first reaction to seeing her. Brian had spent the last month trying to help Nick make sense of why she hadn’t called and the stories circulating about Kat and Puffy. Nick had stayed strong until the picture’s showed up. Brian didn’t think Kat had betrayed his best friend, but he was quickly becoming a minority. Nick was very confused, which allowed room for doubt. Brian realized the reporters were going to exit using the doorway Kat was standing in. He caught Remo’s eye and that was all it took for the bodyguard to understand. He pulled Kat out of the doorway and around the corner. He explained about the press. Kat was grateful he had spared her an assault by them.
After all the reporters cleared out. Kat walked into the arena. The guys were doing their soundcheck with the band. They were running through “It’s Gotta Be You.” AJ was singing, but stopped when he saw her. He was beside Tommy, the keyboard player, who followed his gaze to rest on Kat. He fumbled what he was playing. Nick spun around from his side of the stage to rag on the two men for messing up. Nick looked past them and saw Katrina. The smile left his face. In five seconds, everything came to a screeching halt. Brian tried to break the tension.
“Kat you’re here! How was your flight?”
Kat replied her eyes never leaving Nick, “Long. I couldn’t get here fast enough. Hello Nick.”
“Hi,” said Nick in a monotone voice.
“OK everybody, break time,” said Kevin.
If things had not be so serious, Kat would have laughed at how fast the place cleared out. She walked toward the stage. Nick had not moved. She wasn’t even sure if he was breathing.
“Nick,” started Kat.
“Go home Kat,” interrupted Nick
He stalked off the stage. Kat stood there for a moment and let it all sink in. Turning she followed him. She made it to the corridor in time to see Nick turn left at the end of the hall. She followed. Finally, she caught up to him in the green room.
“Nick can we go somewhere and talk?”
“Katrina there is nothing to talk about.”
“The hell there isn’t! You listen to me Nick Carter. I just flew 12 hours to get to you. I don’t know what you think is going on.”
“Yeah right,” muttered AJ.
“You stay out of this AJ. Now Nick I wanted to talk to you in private, but you won’t do that, so here goes. Everyone get comfy cause the show is starting. I can’t believe you think Sean and I are capable of this crap.”
“What am I suppose to think Kat? You are all over everything with him. You don’t call me. It’s been two fucking months Katrina. You tell me what to think.”
“No you believe whatever you want. If you truly knew me, then there would be no doubt. I guess I was wrong about you. I don’t give a fuck what anyone else thinks, including everyone in this room. I only care about you and what you think. Now I know. So you know what? Here take your ring. I don’t want it anymore,” she screamed as she pulled the ring off her finger and handed it to him. “Take it Nick. Fine here Brian you hold it for him.”
Kat took Nick’s phone out of her pocket and called information then the airport. She spoke with Sean’s pilot and asked him to wait for her. She would be there within the hour to fly home with him. Hanging up the phone, she tossed it to Nick.
“By the way, Nick I did call you, several times. You can ask Patty, because I left a message with her each time. Folks, it’s been… well anyway, have great lives.”
With that Kat grabbed her bags from Remo and walked out of the silent room. She kept it together until she was safely on the plane. She didn’t want to give the fans and the reporters any ammo against her, Nick, Sean…anyone. She cried all the way back to New York. She then caught a flight to Orlando. Melissa was at the airport.
“So what happened?”
“I don’t have a wedding to plan for, but I do have packing to do.”
“Katrina.”
“Melissa I can’t right now. Let’s get my bags and go ho…to Nick’s.”
The second Katrina saw the doggies she began to sob. She couldn’t believe this was happening. Her life with Nick was over. Melissa called her Mom. Katrina disappeared into the bedroom with the dogs. She cried herself to sleep.
She woke the next morning and it took a moment for the memories to flood back. She cried when they did. The dogs forced her to get up and let them out. Once up, she took a shower. Leaving a note for Melissa, Kat went out to get boxes. Melissa finally cornered her when she arrived home. They talked. Melissa was concerned because her sister had shutdown. She was being logical, unemotional, and rational. This was the way things were, so accept it. In other words, she was suppressing her emotions. By evening, Kat had everything packed and was sitting with Melissa on the patio.
“Lissa can I ask a favor?”
“Sure.”
“Will you continue to stay here and watch the puppies like planned?”
“I guess. Kat where are you going?”
“I called Beth while I was out. I’m going to stay with her until I can find a place.”
“Katrina! Are you moving to New York?”
“It only makes sense Melissa. The magazine’s home base is there. I will be working more. Besides, would you want to listen to dad say I told you so?”
“No, but New York? Aren’t you even going to try and work this out with Nick.”
“Lis there is nothing to workout. Nick hasn’t even called.”
“But Kat…”
“No Melissa. Obviously Nick believes what is being said. There is nothing I can do. Thanks for staying here with the little guys.”
“Of course. When are you leaving?”
“In the morning.”
Chapter 44
“Patty can I talk to you for a minute?”
“Sure AJ. What’s up?”
“Katrina was telling the truth. Wasn’t she?”
“Truth about what?”
“The phone calls,” replied AJ.
They were alone in the dressing room. AJ had wandered in to get sweatshirt. He found Patty in straightening up the room. He had been one of the first to suspect Kat, but when she said she had called Nick and spoken with Patty each time something clicked. He thought back over the past two months. He didn’t know when or how but at some point it seemed like Nick was always asking Patty for his phone. He didn’t carry it anymore. AJ also knew if Katrina had been unfaithful to Nick in anyway she would have come clean. Nick was so upset he couldn’t think straight. Kat had been gone less than 48 hours and Nick was in a daze the whole time. Brian was working hard to keep him together, which allowed AJ to do his detective work.
“I told him when she called.”
“Every time? I understand if you forgot some or even if you were trying to protect him. I mean if she’s been doing what I think she has, Nicky needs protecting.”
“You’re right. I can’t believe she would do this to him and to the group. This kind of publicity is so bad. If she really cared, she would end things with Nick before starting up with HIM. Nicky deserves better.”
“Maybe someone like you,” asked AJ, causing Patty to smile. “I know I’m glad I didn’t get any of her calls. I don’t think I would have told Nick either. He’s been so upset anyway.”
“That was exactly what I was thinking. I was surprised yesterday when she showed up.”
“Really? I wasn’t. She was scheduled to hook up with us here. Didn’t you know?”
“No I didn’t. She was so hateful to me. I’m glad I didn’t tell Nick when she called.”
“I bet. Well Patty I better get back out there before they come and yell at me.”
“OK AJ. Talk to you later.”
“No you won’t,” muttered AJ as he walked out of the room.
AJ waited until they were on the bus, before he told the others what he had found out. Nick was in shock then angry. Finally, he settled on just plain upset. He had blown it with Katrina. He hadn’t trusted her. The others tried to console him, but it was no use. Besides AJ, Kevin, and Howie were feeling pretty bad about doubting her. Brian was feeling bad because he hadn’t stopped her from leaving.
Once they arrived at the hotel, Nick tried to call Katrina. Melissa answered the phone. She had the task of telling Nick that her sister had gone to New York to stay with Beth. It was like someone ripped out his heart when Melissa told him she was moving there. He asked Melissa to let him know she had gotten there safely. He didn’t get much sleep that night.
None of the guys saw Patty until they got to the venue the next afternoon. By the time they did everything was in place.
“Hey guys! You need me?”
“Yes Patty,” replied Kevin. “Please have a seat.”
Brian took over, “AJ filled us in on your little conversation.”
“What,” asked an alarmed Patty. She looked at each guy. Her eyes coming to rest on Nick.
“Patty you remember,” said AJ. “The convo about not giving Nick Kat’s messages.”
“AJ you said you agreed with it.”
“Haven’t read any of the articles about me. I’m known as the liar.”
“Oh I get it you ambushed me you SOB.”
“Sure did lollipops,” smirked AJ.
“So what are you going to do? Fire me?”
Howie answered, “That is exactly what we are going to do.”
“What? You can’t do that!”
Nick spoke for the first time. “We just did.”
“That’s just ducky. You fire me. I will have the last laugh. I’ve got stories I can tell. Like the scene caused when Nicky boy and his fiancée broke up."
“Actually, no you can’t Patty,” interrupted Kevin. “Let me refresh your memory. Do you remember this piece of paper with your signature?”
Patty looked at the sheet of paper and said, “Yes.”
“Then you will remember this is a confidentiality agreement. If you talk about anything you witnessed while working for us, we can sue you. Now you may do some preliminary damage, but we will win in the long run. And trust me, we will make sure our people keep an eye on you.”
“Are you threatening me?”
“Listen bitch,” spat out Nick. “You need to get your crap and get your ass out of here. You are lucky we are giving a plane ticket home.”
“On that note,” said Brian as he stood up and opened the door. “Marcus and Remo will escort to pack up your stuff then take you to the airport, where they will watch you get on the plane and wait until it takes off. Good-bye patty.”
Patty realized she had lost. She took one last look at Nick, then left the room. Brian shut the door and sat back down by Nick. They were all silent for a moment.
“Guy’s I have talk to Kat,” said Nick.
“We thought you might say that,” replied Howie.
“Nick can you get through the next two shows,” asked Brian.
“B I don’t know. Why?”
Kevin said, “Because we have three days off after that and we had Lindsey book you a flight to New York the day after tomorrow.”
“Really? You guys are the best.”
“Nick we also booked you a return flight for two days later. You have got to be on that plane and in London the next day for the show,” stated Howie.
“I will be man. Thanks guys.”
Nick did get through the next two days and found himself in New York the following day. He went straight to Beth’s apartment.
“What you doing here,” asked Beth.
“I came to get Kat back.”
“Oh ya think it’s going to be that simple huh?”
“No, but I’ve gotta try Bit.”
“Only friends call me that and after what you did to my best friend you lost the privilege.”
“I’m sorry Beth. I know I screwed up. I was wrong. Can I please see Kat?”
“She’s not here.”
“Where is she?”
“She’s at the magazine office helping with the layout of the next issue.”
“Thanks Beth. Talk to you later.”
“Sure. Whatever.”
Nick gave the cabby the address of Notorious’ office building as he got into the cab. He fidgeted in the backseat until they got there. The cab didn’t come to a complete stop before Nick was out, throwing the driver enough cash to cover the fare. He bounded into the offices and asked for her. The receptionist took him to Sean’s office. Katrina, Sean, and the art director were going over the final proof of one of the articles. Kat went pale when she saw him. Sean immediately walked over to Nick.
“Aren’t you suppose to be in Europe?”
“I was. I came to see Katrina.”
Sean leaned closer and whispered, “So asshole do you believe her now?”
“Yes.”
“Damn good thing, because I hate to have to lay your ass out.” In a louder voice he said, “Come on TeShaun let’s go down and see if Harry has his article ready to proof.”
After they had left Nick attempted humor, “boy I know how to clear a room.”
“It’s not cleared yet, but wait a sec and it will be.”
“Kat don’t go.”
“Why should I stay? What are you doing here? We are done.”
“No! We can’t be. I love you Kat and I’m sorry. I was stupid. AJ got Patty to fess up. She deliberately kept your messages from me.”
“So!”
“So, I know you were telling the truth.”
Kat yelled, “You should know that all along Nick!”
“I know,” sighed Nick. “Kitten I don’t want to loose you.”
“Too late.”
“It can be.”
“Well it is.”
“Tell me you don’t love me,” challenged Nick. “See you can’t.”
Kat didn’t answer. She just ran out of the room. He hadn’t noticed the other entrance to Sean’s office until Kat left through it. He ran after her, but it led straight out onto the street. He saw her jump in a cab down the street. He followed suit. He knew where she was going. His cab pulled up behind her cab in front of Beth’s apartment building.
“Nick go back to Europe.”
“Not without you.”
“Nick you can’t have me.”
“Katrina please.”
“Where are you staying?”
“Don’t have a place.”
“When are you going back?”
“Tomorrow morning.”
“Hang on.”
Kat left him standing on the sidewalk and went up to ask Beth if he could stay there for the night. They argued for a moment, but Kat won. She opened the door to the building. Nick followed her upstairs.
“You can stay tonight.”
“Thanks Kat…and Beth.”
“Carter thank Katrina. If I had my way your butt be on a bench in Central Park. Now I’m going to bed. No yelling, I have rehearsal tomorrow.”
“OK. Night Bit,” said Katrina.
“So where do you sleep,” asked Nick after Beth disappeared into her room.
“You’re sittin’ on it.”
“You sleep on the couch?”
“For now. I’m trying to find a place.”
“You are really going to stay in New York.”
“It’s were the magazine office is Nick. It only makes sense.”
“You could come to Europe with me. I know I screwed up Kat. If I could take it all back I would, but I can’t.”
“I know Nick, but that doesn’t change the fact that you didn’t trust me. It really hurt Nick and I just can’t let you back in my life.”
“But Kat.”
“No Nick. You were right at the office. I do still love you. I probably always will. However, I need time right now. I need to think. I need to be on my own. I’ve never truly been on my own Nick. I lived at home then I lived with you. I need to do this for me. I need to stand on my own two feet and I can’t do that and be with you. You have to let me get over this hurt.”
“So you don’t care that you are hurting me.”
“Damn it Nick! I don’t want to hurt you, but I need to do this”
“And you want me to wait?”
“I can’t ask that of you. Besides I don’t know if we can get past this. Let me finish! I think it’s best if we give each other space. You finish the tour and I will go on with my work.”
“And when the tour is over?”
“I don’t know Nick. Honestly I don’t, but call me.”
“Kat I’m not going to make it without you.”
“Nickolas Gene Carter you are far stronger than this. You will make it without me. It won’t be easy for either of us, but we will get through it. Now whether we are together when all is said and done, I don’t know. We will have to wait and see.”
They talked for the remainder of the night. They worked through what had happened, but Kat held firm on them not being together. She accompanied Nick to the airport. He managed to get some sleep on the plane, if for no other reason than sheer exhaustion. He hooked back up with the tour in London. He told the guys what happened. He also told them that he would wait for however long it took to get Katrina back in his life.
Chapter 45
“Hello.”
“Hello Nick.”
“Katrina hi! I’m so glad you called. How are you?”
“I’m good. You? Are you getting enough rest now that you’re back home?”
“Honestly? Not really. It’s hard with you not here.”
“Nick don’t.”
“Don’t what Katrina? Tell you the truth? Tell you that I miss you so much?”
“Nick,” sighed Kat, her resolve quickly fading.
“I love you Kat. I want you here. I want to hold you and make love to you.”
“Well that can’t happen Nick. I’m sorry.”
“I’m sorry too. So why did you call?”
“I will be there on Thursday to pick up Raven. It makes no sense for him to be down there in a stable.”
Nick interrupted, “It does if you’re coming back. Besides I’m paying for it.”
“No you’re not. Nick I had them change the billing when I left.”
“I didn’t know.”
“You wouldn’t. Your accountants pay your bills. I just wanted you let you know so it wouldn’t be a shock the next time you went to ride Buddy and didn’t see Raven.”
“Katrina do me a favor and take Buddy with you. I only rode, because I did it with you. I had fun, but I can’t give him the attention he needs and he will miss Raven.”
“Are you sure Nick?”
“Yeah I’m sure.”
“Ok Nick, I will. I guess I better let you go.”
“Will I see you?"
“If you are out at the stables. I’m driving straight through from New York. I will get the trailer and the horses then head out.”
“Who is coming with you?”
“No one.”
“Katrina you can’t do all that driving by yourself. Stay with me on Thursday and leave Friday morning.”
“No.”
“Kat do you want to risk wrecking with the horses?”
“No,” said Kat quietly. “Alright Carter I will stay, but you best have the guestroom ready.”
“Will do.”
“Bye Nick.”
“Bye Kat.” As Nick hung up he whispered, “I love you.”
Kat heard him. She began to cry. She was sitting in the middle of boxes in her new apartment. The scene was surreal. Because of the turns her life had taken in the last two years, she now had three very different friends as buddies in New York and they were all helping her get unpacked.
“Girl you still love that boy just give into it,” said Jennifer Lopez. She was in visiting Sean before starting a new movie.
“Really Kat, you are breaking my heart,” agreed Jennifer Love Hewitt.
“Give it up Jen and Love. She is too stubborn for her own good,” stated Beth.
“Tell us something we didn’t know!”
“Excuse me, but I can hear you,” said Kat.
“Yes but are you listening,” asked Beth.
“Listen Bitty,” started Kat.
“Hey,” interrupted Love trying to keep peace. “Did I hear you tell Nicky Boy that you would stay with him?”
“Umm…yes.”
“Well hallejuah,” said Jennifer. “You will never be able to resist those baby blues.”
“Want to make a bet?”
“No,” laughed Jennifer.
“Good, cause you may have won,” said Kat.
“Then I want to bet.”
“Too late. You people are not helping here. I still have tons of boxes.”
“Oh fine. You just want us to do all this dirty work!”
“Love were you saying something?”
“Me? No.”
“That’s what I thought,” said Kat with a laugh.
Thursday found her pulling into Nick’s driveway at around noon. She parked and got out. Nick was watching for her. He bounded out the house as she got out of her 4-Runner.
“You made it.”
“Yep,” responded Kat.
Nick hugged her, feeling her instantly stiffen. He sighed and let go. He took her bag and led her into the house. The second the door open the dogs pounced.
“Get back,” commanded Nick. “Let us get in the door first.”
“Hi puppies,” said Katrina. She sat down and hugged them. “I’ve missed you guys so much.”
“They’ve missed you too. Lissa took great care of them, but it wasn’t the same.”
“Come on guys I need a nap.”
Nick watched her walk down the hall to the guest bedroom. She lay down with the dogs surrounding her. Nick brought the bag in then shut the door. He slid down the wall and stayed there. He listened to Katrina softly cry. It killed him, but he knew if he tried to comfort her now it would only succeed in pushing her farther away. The room got quiet, so he knew she was sleeping. He drifted off to sleep too.
She opened the door to find him there two hours later. She shooed the puppies back in the room and closed the door. Kneeling down she brushed her fingers through his hair.
“Nick,” whispered Kat.
“Yeah?”
“Nicky have you been sitting here this whole time?”
Nick stretched and said, “Ow. Yep.”
“Nick.”
“Kat I just needed to be closer to you. I knew you wouldn’t let me hold you so I sat here. I guess I dozed off. See I do sleep better with you here.”
Kat caressed his face. He pulled her hand to his mouth and kissed the palm. It sent a shiver through Kat. She allowed him to pull her in for a kiss. He outlined her lips with his tongue before pulling on her bottom lip with his teeth. Katrina’s fingers found their way into Nick’s hair. They moved until they were stretched out the floor. Nick moved above her, never breaking the kiss. Their hands roamed. Kat’s legs opened on instinct. Nick groaned into her mouth. It was her turn to moan, when she felt him begin to move against her. Katrina’s mind came back to her when she felt Nick lift himself so he could take off her shirt.
“Nick stop,” she said. “Stop Nick!”
“Why,” asked Nick.
“Because we can’t do this,” she replied as she pushed him off. “We aren’t together anymore.”
“Only, because you won’t come back,” spat out Nick.
“It’s not that easy Nick and you know it!”
“I know I screwed up. I apologized and you accepted it. You still love me and I still love you. I know you want to be with me as badly as I do you. I know you Kat. I know the hunger you are feeling and I feel it too.”
“Sex is not going to change things Nick. It never does.”
“Hell Kat I know that, but this is more than sex. We belong together Katrina. You can’t deny that so don’t even try.
“Nick where are you going?”
“Out. I’ll be back later,” he said.
Katrina heard the door to the garage close, then the puppies scratching to be let out of the guest bedroom. Katrina let them out and then followed them out into the backyard. That is where Nick found her when he came back.
“Hey,” he said softly.
“Hey.”
“I’m sorry.”
“Don’t apologize Nick. A lot of what you said is right.”
“But us making love would be wrong. Kat, I don’t want to make love to you until you truly mine again.”
“How can you be so sure we will be back together?”
“I told you, we belong together, but I can wait.”
“So what’s for dinner?”
“What do you want?”
“Hmm…something.”
“You really narrowed it down.”
“Yep,” giggled Kat.
“God I’ve missed that sound,” said Nick.
“Nick?”
“Yeah?”
“I’ve missed you. I think pizza will work for the evening.”
“One, OK two pizzas coming up,” said Nick.
He practically skipped into the house to call. It was a small admission on her part but it was a start. He knew he would get her back. He fingered the necklace around his neck as he placed the order. It had his cross and her engagement ring. The night she left Europe she had given it to Brian when Nick didn’t take it. Brian gave it back the day Nick realized he wanted her back. Nick promptly put it on the chain and had never taken it off. He was surprised Kat hadn’t noticed.
They spent the evening eating and talking. Nick told her how proud he was to see her pictures in Notorious. Katrina laughed when he told her he had a subscription now. It meant more than he would ever know. He cared enough to continue to support her. Katrina was bending. When they headed for bed Katrina and Nick slept in their bed. She made Nick promise not to try anything, then had to fight the urge to attack him. It was the most sleep either had gotten in the past couple of months.
In the morning, Katrina loaded Raven and said good-bye to Nick at the stables. Nick had to fight against begging her to stay. She promised to call him each time she stopped to let him know she was OK. He worried about her until she got to Kentucky. They made plans to see each other in two months when they were both at the American Music Awards.
The taxi pulled up at the back entrance of the venue. Katrina paid the driver and grabbed her bags. She was not prepared for the reception she got from the fans standing near the buses. They began hurling insults at her. Luckily Remo had stepped outside to check on the crowd and spotted her. He ushered her into the building quickly.
