Chapter 40
"Kat I'm watchin' the Buccs."
"I know, but Lissa says they are about to do a story on you."
"Really," replied a puzzled Nick as he flipped the channels stopping when he saw his face in the upper right hand corner of the screen.
The reporter said, "Parents of teenage girls break out the tissues. It's seems that Nick Carter, the youngest member of the Backstreet Boys, just might be engaged. Sources tell us he purchased a ring for his girlfriend two days before his 21st birthday on January 28. Not much is known about the girl. She has been seen and photographed with him at different events over the past two years. She is apparently a model, because she can be seen in the group's "Back To Your Heart " video portraying Mr. Carter's love interest. Can you say type casting? Now lets move on to the world of film…"
Katrina and Nick were staring at each other as she spoke into the phone. "Talk to you later Lissa. Tell mom and dad we love them."
She hung up the phone and sat down next to Nick on the couch. Picking up the remote she went back to the football game. Nick laughed as he wrapped his arm around her.
"I'm model now."
"Yep."
"So how long do you think it will take for The Firm to start getting calls," asked Katrina.
"Guess we will find out soon enough."
"Nick do they know we are engaged?"
"Nope," replied Nick
"This is not good Nick. They are going to be very unhappy with you."
"I know. Don't care. You are mine forever. Me happy. You happy?"
"Me happy," giggled Katrina.
It took approximately 10 minutes before the firm found out about the rumor. Apparently their phones were ringing off the hook asking for confirmation. Thirty minutes after the show Nick and Kat's phone rang. Nick answered. Katrina watched as he got furious. He yelled into the phone and hung up. She then watched as he called the other guys.
That evening, everyone including girlfriends were all gathered at Brian and Tonya's house. Nick had managed to contact the guys before management. However, they did all receive a call saying there was a meeting called for the following morning to discuss the "situation". Management wanted to meet with Nick first then have the rest of the guys join them. The guys decided with the help of the girls to change the game plan. They were going as a united force.
The next morning their management team was more than a little surprised by the crowd that greeted them. Nick led the way to the conference room. While the engagement was discussed, Katrina watched Nick. She thought she might have to get evil to get them to back off. As it turned out, she never had to open her mouth. Nick was very clear about the role the Firm was to play his personal life. He, with the guys' vocal backing, made it clear they could not dictate to him when he could become engaged. It was agreed a formal statement confirming the rumor would be issued. After everything was settled, they headed back to AJ's for lunch.
Over the next few days, Nick and Katrina along with their friends and families watched the fall out from the "BIG" announcement. It was mixed. Katrina made the mistake of going out on the net and looking at some of the sites. Nick found her crying. She was sure she had ruined the BSB. Also reporters were digging into her life. They were speculating that she was using Nick to further her career as a photographer. In the end Nick and Katrina got through it like everything else…together.
Two months later found the BSB filming their next video. They were again doing it with Wayne Isham. The video was for "No One Else Comes Close" and it was a continuation of the story started in "Back To Your Heart". All the models from the first video were back. Wayne and the Boys wanted to push the envelope a bit on their image. They were being more daring in showing the guys as adults.
At the end of the previous video the girls were in the same places as the guy, but the couples were not back together yet. The song had been remixed and a longer version was being used for the video. "No One Else Comes Close" opened with all the couples at a party. A different girl is seen trying to flirt with AJ. He sees his girl go out on to the balcony and follows. As he steps out on to the balcony he begins to sing. He takes her in his arms and they start to dance. During the chorus, Howie and his girl say good-bye to AJ and leave. Cut to them in the car and Howie singing to her. Cut to Nick and Katrina lying in bed the next morning. Lying with her head on his chest. He watches her sleep and sings to her. At the chorus cut to Brian walking with his girl. At the bridge, Kevin is sitting at the piano with his girl. He is playing and singing for her. Finally, all the guys are on a stage in suits singing. When the song ends, the camera pans to the audience where their girls are giving them a standing ovation.
Again the Boys visited TRL, this time to world premiere the video. Carson greeted them and asked Nick if a wedding date had been set. Nick said they had not set a date. Brian also took this opportunity to announce his engagement to Tonya. Brian had asked her to marry him on her birthday two weeks earlier. As Carson said it was two down, three to go.
Katrina was meeting with Puffy at Notorious while with Nick in New York. Puffy gave her the next assignment, which was to fly with him to Atlanta. He was going there to interview James Brown. She wanted to shoot them during the interview. So when it was time to leave Nick flew home alone.
Three days later Katrina arrived home. She took the earliest flight out. She arrived home to find Nicks still asleep. Slipping off her clothes, she crawled under the covers and proceeded to wake Nick up. They spent the morning in bed making love. They went to Orlando to have dinner with Brian and Tonya.
"Come on in guys," greeted Brian.
"Thanks B," replied Katrina as she hugged him.
The guys high-fived as the three walked into the kitchen to find Tonya. Brian and Nick went out to grill the steaks, leaving Tonya and Katrina to prepare everything else.
"So have you set a date," asked Katrina.
"Yes this fall before the new tour kicks off. Since they are starting in Europe again we thought that would make a great honeymoon. What about you guys," inquired Tonya.
"Not even thought about it."
"Well there is no hurry."
"I guess," said Kat.
They went back to preparing the rest of the meal. The couples had a great evening talking and spending time together. Late that evening, Nick carried Kat from the car into the house and laid her in their bed. She snuggled against him as he drifted off to sleep.
"Nick," whispered Katrina when she woke up the next morning.
"Hmm," mumbled Nick as he pulled her closer to him.
"Nick," said Katrina louder.
"Yes," said Nick as he stretched.
"Brian and Tonya have already set the date of their wedding."
"I know."
"OK."
"Not OK. What's wrong?"
"Nothing."
"Kat you know it makes me nuts when you do that."
"I know. Alright, when are we going to set our date?"
"I don’t know. Do you want to do it before Brian and Tonya?"
"No, that wouldn't be fair to them."
"So we will have to wait until after the tour."
"Yeah."
"Then we have a time," he said as he kissed her nose.
Chapter 41
"Are you ready little girl," asked Tonya's father.
"Yes I am Daddy. Kat do I look OK?"
"Sweetie you look beautiful. Let me get in there and take Brian's picture when he first sees you. Remember it's just you two and the minister."
"I know. Thanks Katrina."
"Anytime."
Nick watched Katrina come in the sanctuary and get ready. Harold was Brian's best man. The BSB were the groomsmen. Katrina had agreed to take photos of the wedding and reception. They were in Brian's home church in Lexington. It was an afternoon wedding followed by a reception at a local club.
The doors at the back of the sanctuary opened as "Here Comes The Bride" signaled everyone to stand. Katrina got the shot she wanted. It was of Brian looking at Tonya with complete adoration. She then photographed Tonya and her father coming up the aisle. The ceremony flew by and soon everyone was at the club. Katrina spent most of the reception taking photographs. Finally, Brian and Tonya danced over to Katrina.
"Hello happy couple. I think you are going to love all the pics I got today."
"I sure we will," replied Brian taking her camera away.
"Hey mister what are you doing," asked a puzzled Kat.
"You are officially off duty."
"Brian what are you talking about? Give me the camera and go enjoy yourselves."
"Katrina Morgan look over in that corner," directed Tonya.
Katrina followed Tonya's gaze to a table in the corner. Nick was sitting by himself. He had a napkin he was drawing on, but still looked very lonely.
"Get rear end over to that man," ordered Tonya.
"You guys sure?"
"Yes," they exclaimed in unison.
"OK. Thanks!"
Katrina walked across the room and stood in front of Nick. He looked up smiling. Pulling her into his lap, he kissed her sweetly on the lips.
"Nicky I'm sorry I've been ignoring you."
"It's OK Kitten. I wanted you to take pictures for Brian and Tonya. It's their special day."
"I know, but guess what?"
"What?"
"I'm officially off duty now. What do you want to do?"
"I want…well we can't do what I want here. So hmmm…. Let's dance."
"Okie."
Katrina lead Nick to the center of the dance floor, where he wrapped his arms around her from behind and began to dance. They finished dancing to the fast song. The next one was slow. Kat turned in Nick's arms and tangled her fingers in his hair. They swayed to the music and stared into each other's eyes.
"Will you look at those two," said Jane Carter.
"They glow," agreed Dana Morgan.
"I'm glad you're daughter came into my son's life. He comes to life when she's around. He has more confidence in himself."
"I glad they met. Nick brings a calm to Katrina. She was always a restless soul. Maybe because she wanted to follow her dreams, but was afraid to. Nick gave her the support she needed to find courage to pursue her photography. It's easy to see they are meant for one another."
"True. Now how long do you think it will be before we have grandchildren to spoil," asked Jane.
"Let's get them married first," laughed Dana.
Midnight found Brian and Tonya on their honeymoon and Nick and Katrina at the waterfall. They were skinny-dipping. As Banshee munched on grass, Nick spread the blanket they brought out by the water. He and Katrina watched the stars.
"I'm really happy for B and Tonya," said Nick.
"Me too."
"You know why else I'm happy?"
"Why," asked Katrina.
Nick turned on his side and said, "cause you are mine."
"That make me happy too."
"Good," said Nick.
He leaned down and kissed Katrina. His tongue outlining her lips before sliding inside. Kat's fingers tangled in Nick's hair. Nick pulled away and let his eyes roam her entire body. She was so beautiful to him. Again he leaned down but went for her breast. He kissed each one. Nick then traced a line down her stomach to where her legs came together. He watched her arching to meet his fingers as he teased her. He felt himself getting hard just watching her. Her breathing was speeding up. Her sighs driving him crazy. Her eyes flew open when she felt him remove his fingers. Looking into her eyes he covered her body. He moaned as she opened to allow him access to her. She slowly slid her legs up and wrapped them around Nick's waist. They watched each other. Neither felt a need to rush this. They rocked together under the stars until finally they found their release. Once their breathing returned to normal, they dressed and rode Banshee back to the Wilson's.
The Wilson's watched the young couple walked out of the barn and head home.
"It does my heart to see those two still together," said Papa Wilson.
"I know what you mean. They are truly special together," agreed Mama Wilson. "A gift to each other."
"Kinda like us," chuckled her husband.
Chapter 42
“I wish you were going with me.”
“I do too Nick, but I will be there soon.”
“In two months.”
“Nick do you want me to tell Sean no?”
“No,” sighed Nick.
“I will do these two assignments then catch the first flight to you. Do me one favor.”
"What?”
“Don’t cause any power outages,” giggled Katrina.
“It only happened once!”
“I know, but I got a smile out of you.”
“You usually do. Now come here and let me hold you until I have to get on the plane.”
“Deal.”
Nick held her tightly trying to memorize the feeling of her body pressed against his. Burying his nose in her hair, he inhaled deeply. He always loved the way she smelled. Actually he just loved her.
Kat loved the warmth of Nick’s body and hearing his heartbeat. He had a way of making her feel loved, protected and free all at the same time. It was going to be hard not seeing him for two months. One of the pluses and minuses of being with a music star was the person not having a “normal” job.
Their lives were divided into segments. The making a record segment and the touring segment; the preparation segment always preceded these two segments. It was the time-off segment that was really great. Do whatever you want and no one to answer to about anything. Unfortunately there could also be long stretches of time when the couple wasn’t together. Katrina’s career choice also meant more separation.
This time Katrina’s work was keeping her from going to Europe for the start of the tour. Sean “Puffy” Combs was so pleased with the buzz created by Kat’s in interview shots of the James Brown that he wanted her to accompany him on his next two interviews.
“Nick you have to go,” whispered Kat.
“I know,” said an equally quiet Nick. “I love you and I will call you when I get there.”
“I love you too.”
The couple kissed good-bye and Nick boarded the plane. Kat had three days to kill until she flew out to meet Sean. She cried herself to sleep that night, only to be awakened at 4 AM by Nick. He had arrived safely. Later that morning she rounded up all the dogs and gave them baths. That afternoon and the next day, Kat cleaned the house, did laundry, and ran errands.
Melissa had graduated from the University of Kentucky that previous May. She was going to house and puppy sit while studying for her CPA Exam in December. She arrived the day before Kat left. Lissa helped her sister pack and the following morning took her to the airport.
First stop was Patty LaBelle’s house. Miss Patty was a hoot. She was very candid and very loving. They were there a week. They had to work around her schedule. She was in the middle of mixing her new album and rehearsing for an HBO Special. She took an instant liking to Kat, which allowed Kat to take pictures no one else could have yet again. Miss Patty even allowed Kat to photograph her fixing breakfast. As long as, Kat did not show her face in close up. As Miss Patty said, there is no mystery if photographed head on in the morning without her make-up and her fans needed the mystery!
Kat flew back to New York with Sean on his private plane. She helped prepare the layout of the article, while she stayed at Sean’s. Jennifer Lopez was on location in South America shooting a film. Sean was scheduled to attend the Essence Awards. Jennifer wasn’t able to come back in time and suggested he take Kat. Kat had a fun shopping for her dress with Sean. He was like AJ when it came to shopping. They attended the awards show and had a great time.
Two weeks later found them flying first to Georgia, then to Texas. Sean was profiling Rosalyn Carter and Barbara Bush for an upcoming edition. He had gotten the idea when he was seated with President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalyn for a benefit dinner to support Habitat for Humanity. He wanted to focus on what they had done since leaving the White House.
Both women were true ladies. They were open, honest and gracious. Katrina had a great time photographing them. She was having such a great time that she didn’t see the stir she had cause by attending the awards show with Sean. It wasn’t until she called home upon arriving back in New York that she found out what was going on.
“Hello.”
“Hey Lis! Have the children driven you nuts?”
“Katrina where have you been?”
“You know where I’ve been.”
“Have ya picked up a newspaper, tabloid, turned on a TV?”
“No. Why?”
“Well you are on the cover of all the tabloids and the E! Gossip show is having a field day. Not to mention Hard Copy.”
“With what? Some deranged fans accounts of some none existent night of love with Nick?”
“NO! With your affair with Puffy?”
“What,” exclaimed Kat.
“At least now I have your attention.”
“Melissa what are you talking about?”
“You went with Puffy to that awards show and they have pictures of you hugging.”
“Of course I hugged Sean. He had just won an award.”
“Well the press thinks you and he are cheating on Jennifer and Nick while they are out of the country.”
“You have got to be kidding.”
“No I’m not. Kat have you talked to Nick?”
“No I haven’t I keep missing him, when I call. They didn’t give me an itinerary.”
“Well he’s heard about this and he’s seen the pictures.”
“Come on they can’t be that bad.”
“Sis if I didn’t know you I would think you to were doing the deed. They caught you at the best angle to support their story. It looks like you are pulling away after kissing.”
“Lissa please tell me Nick doesn’t believe it.”
“I think the pictures coupled with the fact that he hasn’t heard from you.”
“Wait,” interrupted Kat. “I’ve been calling him, sis. I just never catch him. Someone else is always holding his phone for him. I leave a message every time.”
“Strange. Well dear sister I suggest you get your ass to Europe and find out what’s going on and explain this all to Nick.”
“Believe me I will.”
After hanging up with Melissa, Kat called Nick, but there was no answer. She got online and went to several sites. There bigger than life was the damning picture. Sean walked in the living room to find Kat crying. She told him was happening. He immediately called Jennifer. She hadn’t heard yet, but was now livid that the press was doing this. Kat talked to Jennifer and then told Sean she needed to get to Nick. Sean insisted she use his plane. It would get her there faster. By that evening she had talked with both her parents and Nick’s. Called Melissa back and was seated on the plane as it taxied down the runway. She just prayed everything would work out.
"Nick turn to E!"
