Chapter 31
Nick turned at the sound of the glass door opening. Kat ran to him and leaped in his arms. Wrapping her legs around his waist.
Nick laughed, “Welcome home.”
“Welcome home,” whispered Kat as she pulled back to look into his eyes. “I missed you.”
“Me too. Ouch!”
“What’s wrong,” asked Kat.
“Kids stop jumping on me,” yelled Nick. “In the house NOW!”
Katrina looked down to see all the dogs scurrying into the house and started to laugh.
“Wow they listened to you dad.”
“Yep.”
Nick walked to one of the lounge chairs and sat down with Kat sitting straddle of him. He brushed a curl out of her eyes, staring deeply into them. Kat broke eye contact to look at what Nick had set up. In the grassy area between the patio and the canal, next to the pool, Nick had laid out a blanket. Lighted pillar candles were near the blanket. Kat looked at Nick. His heart skipped a beat when he saw the look in her eyes. It was a look of pure love.
“Does this mean you aren’t mad at me,” she asked.
“I’m not mad at you. Why would you think that?”
“I knew you were disappointed when I told you about the job. Then you said you might not be home when I got back. I just thought you were mad at me.”
“I was disappointed that you weren’t going to be home, because I missed you so much. But I’m real glad you got the job. I told you I wouldn’t be home, so you wouldn’t be surprised when the lights were out in the house. I wanted to surprise you.”
Kat kissed him before saying, “You surprised me.”
“Good. You hungry?”
“Yeah I am.”
“All righty then,” Nick said as he stood and carried her to the blanket. Sitting her down he said, “I’ll be back.”
Nick returned a moment later with a basket of food. He joined Kat on the blanket, not before making sure the dogs were securely shut in the house.
“Nick what did you do?”
“Well I tried cooking, but…” he trailed off giving her the patented Carter grin.
“I guess I should be grateful the house is still standing,” giggled Kat.
“It wasn’t that bad but even the dogs wouldn’t touch the lasagna.”
“Oh no! That’s OK baby. You man the grill and I will make the lasagna. Deal?”
“Deal. Anyway, I called a take out chef kinda place and got dinner. It’s not lasagna.”
“It doesn’t matter Nick. I love that you did this,” said Kat.
Nick said, “I love you.”
They ate dinner and talked. The shoot had gone great. Kat said everyone at Rolling Stone was nice. Puffy’s house was gorgeous. She told Nick when she first saw it she thought of him, because Puffy’s house looked out on the ocean. Puffy said they had an open invitation to stay with him whenever they wanted. Nick loved the way she glowed when she talked. She was so happy, which made him very happy. Nick listen to her talk, when she finished he carried her to bed and they made love all night long.
Chapter 32
“Hi Nick. The kids now have all their shots,” said Kat as she walked in behind the dogs.
“Good. You got a call while you were out,” said Nick before kissing her hello.
“Who called?”
“It’s on the paper by the phone,” hedged Nick. He followed her wanting to see her reaction.
Kat read the name and number, “Nick why did In Style Magazine call me?”
“Silly call and find out.”
Kat did call. The Rolling Stone with her pictures of Puffy had hit newsstands three weeks earlier. Kat had to admit she was proud of how they turned out. She talked for a few minutes while Nick pretended to play with the dogs and not listen to the conversation. When Kat hung up, she sat in stunned silence. Finally, Nick asked.
“Kitten what did they want?”
“Huh? Oh! They want me to do a layout for them.”
“Really? Who are you going to photograph?”
“Jennifer Love Hewitt.”
“WooHoo! My girl is becoming famous,” enthused Nick.
Kat laughed as Nick hugged her. “I wouldn’t go that far.”
“I would,” stated Nick firmly. “I’m so proud of you. So tell me about it.”
As Kat talked she got excited. She was to fly to New York the following Monday to go hang out with Jennifer. Her assignment was to follow the young actress around for a week, getting pictures of her on the set, at home, and out on the town.
The phone interrupted Kat and Nick. Nick answered the phone and with a grin handed it to her. She was pleasantly surprised to find Jennifer Love Hewitt on the other end. They had met at Puffy’s party the previous January. Jennifer called to say she was excited about seeing Kat again. She also asked if Nick was doing anything the following week. Nick stuck his tongue out at Kat when she joked that he was just being a bum until they started the next leg of the tour in a couple of months. They talked some more about how they would like for the layout to look.
Nick said as she hung up, “you know you must pay.”
Kat played innocent, “pay for what?”
“Calling me a bum,” declared Nick as he pulled her to the floor and started tickling her.
Kat squealed which brought the dogs running and barking. They pounced on Nick licking him to death.
“That’s it puppies get Daddy!”
“No get Mommy!”
“No Daddy,” laughed Kat.
The dogs had them both trapped. Kat finally managed to get up and get them outside. She came back and sat on Nick.
“Sure have a seat,” chuckled Nick.
“Already did,” said Kat.
“So I see.”
Kat’s look turned thoughtful for a moment before she spoke. “Nicky will you come to New York with me?”
“I’d go anywhere for you,” sang Nick.
“Cute Carter.”
“Thought so Morgan.”
“I’m so excited. I can’t believe my pictures are in all these magazines. It’s all because of you.”
Nick asked, “Me? How you figure that?”
“If I hadn’t met you then I wouldn’t have taken your pictures. If we hadn’t become friends you wouldn’t have invited me to join you on the road when I needed to get away from the crap at home. Then we wouldn’t have fallen in love and I wouldn’t have been at Puffy’s party, taking pictures. He would have never had me take his pictures for Rolling Stone and I wouldn’t be taking Jennifer Love Hewitt’s pictures for In Style. Mainly you love and support me like no one else. Nicky I love you so much,” she concluded. Kat planted kisses all over his face before settling in on his lips. She sucked on his bottom lip causing him to moan.
“Kitten I love you too.”
“Nicky did I ever tell you I’ve had a thing for your mouth?”
“My mouth?”
“Yep. Especially your bottom lip. I love your bottom lip. Even before I met you. Every once in awhile I would see you or your picture and think, I love that boy’s mouth.”
“I’m glad,” he mumbled before kissing her again.
The phone interrupted them again. Nick picked up the cordless and answered it.
“Hello,” he said as Kat moved to his free ear. “As a matter of fact you were interrupting B.”
“Nick,” giggled Kat.
“Brian says Hi.”
“Hi B,” responded Kat loud enough for Brian to hear.
“So what do you need,” laughed Nick. “Sure I can give you a ride. I will be there in an hour. OK. See ya.”
“I forgot you had a meeting today.”
“Yeah. I want to stay here with you and discuss this bottom lip thing more,” he said nuzzling her neck.
“Mmmm. We can pick this up when you get home. You guys have any ideas for the new video?”
“Not really. We are meeting with Wayne to see what he has.”
“Cool. I’ve been a fan of Wayne Isham since he worked with Bon Jovi and Def Leppard.”
“Wait do my ears deceive me? I was not your first teenybopper crush?”
“Baby I wasn’t a teenager when we met remember? Anyway you are way more than a crush.”
“OK,” giggled Nick giving her the “Carter Grin”.
“You go get Brian. I will do some work around here and fix dinner. What time do you think you will be home?”
“I don’t know. I will call you before I leave the meeting.”
“Sounds like a plan. Don’t forget tonight we have a bottom lip to discuss,” she said as she captured his bottom lip again.
“You keep that up and I won’t leave.”
Kat stood up and offered him a hand. “Come on, get up. If you miss this meeting they will all be pissed.”
“You’re right. Be back later babe,” he sighed and kissed her.
“I’m now babe?”
“You were always a babe,” he retorted, smacking her on the butt and heading for the garage.
Chapter 33
“Hey look there’s Kevin,” said Brian as he motioned to his cousin walking into the office building.
“He’s always late. We can’t let him beat us into the meeting. Run,” yelled Nick.
The two guys tore out across the parking lot. They ran inside and found Kevin talking to the receptionist. They stopped long enough to ask what room the meeting was in and for Kevin to ask why they were running. When Kevin heard the answer he took off after them, leaving the receptionist laughing.
Brian burst through the door first, getting everyone’s attention. Nick and Kevin, who jostled at the door, followed him. Nick managed to get in first, stumbling as he made his way to a chair. Kevin collected himself when he realized the scene they had made and found a chair.
Wayne greeted, “Hello guys. Nice to see you’re excited about the new video.”
“Thanks Wayne,” said a blushing Kevin.
Brian and Nick burst out laughing.
“OK, what’s going on,” asked Howie with a smirk. He had a feeling this was good.
“Nothing,” started Brian. “Kevin was just the last one to a meeting again.”
Nick went on to explain when he saw the confused looks on the others faces. By the time he had finished telling the story they were all laughing. Even Kevin was chuckling.
Kevin said, “Now can we talk about the video. Wayne what are you thinking of for this one?”
“Well I have few ideas. I know I want each of you to be paired up.”
“All right women! Now that’s what I’m talking about,” exclaimed AJ.
“Settle down Boner,” laughed Howie.
“Hey I’m a young guy. It’s allowed and like you weren’t thinking it too,” retorted AJ.
Wayne took control of the meeting. They talked about some possible scenarios. The video was for the ballad “Back To Your Heart”. MTV had already contacted the Boys management about doing a Making of the Video. Now it was a matter of deciding what girls to use and what setting they would be in. They weren’t having any luck.
Two hours of talking and they took a break. Everyone walked off in different directions. After a few minutes, AJ walked back in the room with Nick. Wayne was sitting at the table making some notes and didn’t look up.
“So how’s your ghost rider doing” asked AJ.
“She’s fine. Are you ever going to let me live that down?”
“Hmm, let me think…nope.”
Wayne asked, “What’s this about a ghost rider?”
“Well ya see,” started AJ.
“No you don’t Boner. I’m telling this story,” interrupted Nick.
Nick went on to tell the story of how he and Kat met as the rest of the guys filed back in. Wayne got very excited as Nick talked. He asked questions about the rest of the video shoot.
“Boys I do believe we have your concept.”
“What would that be,” asked Kevin.
“The video opens with a girl on a horse riding across a field at night. Nick that’s your girl. She comes up on you and stops the horse. You look at each other for a moment then she takes off again full speed. Kevin, you go to the waterfall and remember spending time there with your true love. Howie you are at a cabin thinking about your lost love. Brian you are in the hayloft of a barn. AJ you are riding a motorcycle on a country road.”
“Bikes and Women. I’m sold,” said AJ.
“I like the idea,” agreed Kevin.
“Me too,” said Howie.
“Count me in,” stated Brian.
“It’s all good,” smiled Nick.
“Good. Now get out of here and let me flesh this out. I will get with you next week with storyboards and a list of potential girls for the video.”
“Uh Guys. Will you need me?”
“Why,” asked Howie.
“Well I promised Kat I would go with her to New York. She is doing a shoot for In Style Magazine.”
“I don’t suppose we do,” said Wayne. “Who is she shooting?”
“Jennifer Love Hewitt.”
“Sweet,” said AJ.
Kevin asked, “How long will you be gone?”
“We leave Monday and come back on Sunday morning.”
“OK then I don’t see a problem. We don’t meet about finalizing the dates for next tour until Monday,” agreed Kevin. “Go have fun. Tell Kat congratulations.”
Howie agreed, “Yeah tell her congratulations. She’s really making a name for herself.”
“Really and tell her to bring me back a hot pic of Ms Hewitt,” said AJ.
“Sure thing Boner. Are we done here?”
“Yes. Get out of here,” said Wayne with a chuckle.
Nick called Kat on his way out to the Durango. He would be home in an hour and a half max. Saying goodbye to the others, he and Brian pulled out of the parking lot.
Three hours had passed since Nick had called. Kat was officially worried now. She had refrained from calling Brian, but not any longer. She dialed the number and waited.
“Hello.”
“Brian is Nick with you?”
“No Kat he’s not. He left…man, over 2 hours ago. He’s not there?”
“No he’s not. I was hoping you two were playing b-ball and lost track of time.”
“Did you try his cell? Duh! Don’t answer that.”
“I got no answer. Brian I’m getting worried.”
“Maybe he just stopped off somewhere,” said Brian. He was trying to reassure both of them. Nick would never just not go home without calling.
“Brian I’m going to get off here. He may be trying to call.”
“Good idea. Let me know when he gets home.”
“I will. Thanks Brian. Bye.”
“Bye Kat.”
Kat spent the next half-hour pacing through the house with five dogs following along until she put them outside. She was just this side of panicking when the phone rang and she dove for it.
“Nick?”
“No Kat. It’s Brian. He’s still not there?”
Kat began to cry, as she answered, “No Brian. I’m so scared. Something has happened. I just know it.”
“Kat breath. Can you hang in there until I get there? I will drive the route Nick takes.”
“You will?”
“Of course. I will be there in an hour. I’m sure there is a good explanation. If there isn’t, I’ll kick his butt!”
“You have my permission, but you will have to get in line.”
“In line for what,” asked the voice behind Kat.
Kat turned to see Nick standing behind her. She ran to him, pulling into a hug.
“Hey Kitten, what’s wrong and who’s on the phone,” asked Nick.
Kat handed him the phone as she said, “It’s Brian. Where were you? You were so late. I was so scared.”
“Hey B. Yeah I’m fine. Kat asked me the same thing. Let answer will ya! Now, I had a flat tire. I went to call you and the battery in my cell died. I had to change the tire. Yes Brian I did it all by myself. Thanks for your confidence in me! You were? Well thanks buddy. Yes I am going to take care of this beautiful lady. I know she’s upset. Thanks for talking to her. Later man.”
Nick hung up the phone and hugged Kat. She was still crying and feeling completely stupid.
“Nick I’m sorry for being such a girl and crying.”
“It’s OK Kitten. I’m sorry I worried you.”
“It wasn’t your fault. I glad you are OK. Changed a tire, huh?”
“I am capable of doing that!”
“I know. You are my strong, manly Nicky. How did the meeting go?”
“Good. They are using how we met.”
“Really?”
“Really.”
“Tell me about it.”
Nick spent the next few minutes explaining what little he knew about the concept Wayne had in mind. He then went upstairs and hopped in the shower. He was pleasantly surprised when Kat joined him. Kat filled him in on the schedule for the coming week while they had dinner. Her contact with In Style had called back with details for the trip. They went to bed and fell asleep watching a movie on TV.
The cab pulled up in front of the darkened house. Katrina paid the driver. Nick told her he might be out when she arrived home. She was worried that he was still upset with her for doing the photo shoot. She was greeted at the door by the five dogs. She greeted them each, before taking her bags to the bedroom. Dropping her bags on the floor she walked over to the window to look at the water. She was stunned at the sight laid out before her. After a moment she bounded through the house and into the backyard.
