The following are treat recipes that I have found over the years and have long since lost or never have known who or from where they came.  Most of them call for rolling and cutting, but being lazy, I usually just roll them into little balls and then flatten by hand.  Or in one case I just flatten out in the pan by patting the dough.

Apple Cinnamon Training Bits

4 cups whole wheat flour (you can substitute rye, oat, buckwheat of whatever)
1/2 cup cornmeal
1 egg
2 Tlbs. vegetable oil
1 small apple grated (through the food processor)
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 1/3 cup water

Combine all ingredients except apple and water.  Add grated apple into mixture and add water.  Mix until forming together.  Turn out on a lightly floured surface.  Knead well.  Roll out to 1/4 to 1/2 inch thickness.  (This is the one I just pat out right on the baking sheet that has been sprayed with a nonstick spray).  Take a straight edge knife and score dough horizontally then vertically to make a grid of 3/4 inch squares.  Don't score all the way through the dough.

Bake at 325° for 1 hour.  Yields 1 1/2 pounds

Garlic Dog Bones

2 cups whole wheat flour (or substitute)
1/2 cup cornmeal
2/3 cup water
6 Tlbs. vegetable oil
1/2 tsp. garlic powder

Combine all ingredients and mix.  This will make a stiff dough.  Pour out on a floured surface and knead.  Roll to 1/2 inch thickness and cut with a cookie cutter.  (I roll into balls and flatten by hand)  Place on a greased cookie sheet.

Bake at 350° for 20 minutes

Dog Bones

3/4 cup hot water or meat juices (chicken or beef broth)
1/2 cup powdered milk
1 egg beaten
1/3 cup butter
1/2 tsp. salt
3 cups whole wheat flour (or substitute)

In a large bowl pour hot water (or broth) over butter.  Stir in powdered milk, salt and egg.  Add flour 1/2 cup at a time mixing well after each addition.  Knead for 3 to 4 minutes adding more flour if necessary to make a very stiff dough.  Pat or roll to 1/2 inch thickness and cut into bone shapes.  Place on a greased baking sheet

Bake 325° for 50 minutes.  Allow to cool and dry out until hard.  Makes approximately 1 1/4 pounds.

Sunshine Liver Bait

1 Lb. finely chopped liver
1 cup whole wheat flour (or substitute)
1/2 cup cornmeal
1 to 3 Tlbs. garlic salt

Mix well and spread batter on lightly greased piece of tin foil on a cookie sheet.  When done peal off and break into pieces - freeze.  This can be out in the sun all day and can also be refrozen.

Bake 350° for 30 minutes
