Chapter Ten
Sydney stared at Karen with a confused
look on her face.
''Did I hear you right? Did you
say that you want me to live with you?''
''That's what I said. It gets
so lonely living by yourself and we seem to be getting along fairly well
now. So, whadda ya say?''
''I say you're crazy! You have
no idea what you're getting yourself into.''
''I wouldn't be too sure about
that. You'd be surprised...but anyway, I'd really like it if you came to
stay with me.''
''I really don't know your reasons
for doing this, ir what you're trying to get out of it, but yes, I'll move
in with you. Thank you,'' Sydney said sincerely.
''Good choice. I'll get everything
ready for you to come home with me tomorrow morning. I have a few more
patients to see, but I'll stop in later this afternoon,'' Karen told her
before heading out the door.
''Scott, I really think you should
call Karen,'' Lucy insisted.
''She obviously doesn't want to
talk to me, or she would have called. I'm going to give her some time to
cool off.''
''You're just stalling, Pal. You're
the parent in this relationship, you need to make the first move.''
''But Luce...''
''But nothing. The poor girl thinks
you don't care about her. Now, I know that you do, and you know that you
do, but you need to actually tell her.''
''Alright fine. I'll call her
tonight.''
''Good, I'm sure she'll appreciate
it,'' Lucy offered with a smile.
Chris slowly approached the door
wondering why he was so nervous. He and Karen were just going out for drinks.
It wasn't even like it was a real date or anything. Or was it? He tried
not to admit it to himself, but he was beginning to have feelings for Karen
that extended beyond friendship. He straightened is sweater and took a
deep breath before knocking on the door.
Karen swallowed the pill that
was sitting on her tongue, straightened her dress and opened the door.
Chris opened his mouth to speak,
but nothing came out as his eyes widened at the sight of Karen in her short,
red, spaghetti-strap dress.
''Wow...you look amazing,'' He
spit out.
''Thanks, I bought it just for
tonight,'' Karen joked.
''Ah, the perks of being Chief
Resident. Must be nice to have money to throw around.''
Before Karen could reply, they
were interrupted by the phone. she walked over and checked the Caller ID
box and saw that it was the Firehouse.
''So, are you ready?''
''Aren't you going to answer that?''
''Nah, the machine will pick it
up,'' Karen said closing the front door behind them.
''Hey Karen, it's me. I'm calling
to see if you want to come over tomorrow night for dinner and we can talk
about...stuff...if you want to. Call me when you can, bye,'' Scott spoke
into the machine before hanging up.
''Well Luce, I called her, but
she wasn't home. I invited her over for dinner tomorrow night, but I doubt
she'll come.''
''Let's hope she does. I really
want to see you two patch things up and get everything out in the open,''
Lucy said hopefully before heading up the stairs to tuck Serena in.
''Me too, Lucy. Me too,'' Scott
said out loud to himself following her up the stairs.
''So, this single life thing isn't
so bad. I have all of the single nurses flirting with me and waiting for
me to ask them out,'' Chris smirked taking a sip of his Martini.
''You've got to be the most conceited
person I know.''
''You say it like it's a bad thing.''
''You think you're pretty cute,
don't you?''
''Why? Do you think I'm
cute?''
''I think I need to have another
drink before I can make that judgment.''
''You're quite the comedian, Wexler.''
''Well, I try,'' Karen retorted
picking up her glass.
''After a slight silence, Chris
opened his mouth to speak, stopping before the words came out, then thought
for a second before deciding to go ahead.
''What's the problem?''
''No problem, but before I say
this, I need to warn you. I don't normally do this, but I'm going to anyway.
At the risk of facing total rejecting, I figure I'll take my chances. I've
tried to deny it, but I don't really see the point. There's just something
about you Karen Wexler that has me interested.''
