It
hasn't been a year of great hits, but the nets are certainly having
more
luck than they were having last year at this time when they couldn't
seem
to launch anything. The biggest turn-around has come at ABC, while the
UPN is choking on fumes. NBC is doing okay, as are CBS and the WB. Fox,
meanwhile, has a good slate of new series, but patience may be the key
here. Oh, and before you ask, the list of new shows includes anything
that
wasn't on the air last fall.
New Winners:
The Bachelor: When
ABC originally aired this program last spring, ratings were just okay
until
the season finale put a huge dent in the Thursday numbers. Brining it
back
this fall, ratings were again solid, if not spectacular, until 26mil
people
watched the finale. With 537.9 points overall, this is the top
performing
series on network tv overall, new show or not.
8 Simple Rules For Dating My Teenage
Daughter:Last
year, ABC couldn't buy a sitcom hit. The aging shows "Drew Carey,
"Dharma
& Greg" and "Spin City" were going down the toilet. ABC needed
something,
anything. And it found it with this show. Leading off Tuesday nights,
it's
rebuilt a timeslot crushed last season. Sure, things will get alot
tougher
in January once "American Idol" comes along, but I'm sure this show
will
hold its own.
John Doe: The
viewer total isn't that exciting to be sure. 6.5mil viewers. But for
Fox
Fridays at 9pm, where it hasn't had a hit since "The X-Files," even
moderate
ratings are a good thing. It survived despite "Firefly" quickly leaving
the schedule and with a new slot-mate in "Fastlane," this show should
only
grow. Hey Fox, why not tempt fate and move it to Thursday? Remember
"Temptation
Island" ?
CSI Miami: It
was supposed to be the monster hit of the year. While it hasn't quite
lived
up to that title, it has improved the slot dramatically over "Family
Law."
But will it grow? With "CSI" seemingly leveling off, don't count on it.
Fear Factor: Sure,
it's not new. But NBC wasn't airing it at this time last season, so I
had
to count it here....
New Losers:
New ABC dramas:ABC's
had some great dramas over the years. "NYPD Blue." "Once & Again."
"MDs" isn't one of them. And the ratings really show it. "Push, Nevada"
(a hybrid) was a failure of epic proportions, raking up only 141.1
points,
the lowest I've ever seen here. "That Was Then" was only marginally
better,
while the lame "Dinotopia" is heaving on, likely to be canceled at any
time. Come on ABC, you got some good sitcoms, now go for the dramas.
New UPN dramas:
Another net that can't buy a drama hit. It's two new ones, "Haunted"
and
"The Twilight Zone" rank at or near the bottom of the performance
list.
girls club: So
bad they canceled it after only two airings, even David E. Kelley had a
chuckle at that one. He calling it a huge flame-out and did seem to
blame
Fox for pulling the plug. Neither does the viewing public.
And now for the
final tally:
