Surprisingly,
the returning series have been doing rather well this season. From "48
Hours" to "Third Watch" to NBC's Saturday movie, a large number of
series
have posted gains over last season. At this point last season, 33
series
scored 300 points or more in this category, while this season it's up
to
35. The bottom is a little higher also. Only two series this season
have
less than 220 points, last season it was 10.
Winners:
Friday Newsmagazines: Why
are both "20/20" and "48 Hours Investigates" at or near the top of this
list? Just take a look at last season. ABC, convinced that the
wonderful,
but low rated "Once & Again" just spelled Friday hit, moved the
show
to 10pm on Friday, where it died. And even though "20/20" is well off
it's
Friday heyday, it's doing substantially better than that show did at
10pm
last season. As for "48 Hours," adding "Investigates" to the name,
changing
the host and moving it to 8pm did wonders, not to mention it's
averaging
more than 9 million viewers in a slot that bother "The Ellen Show" and
"Danny" died in last season.
WB Dramas:
Of course we've all heard by now how it's been a rocking year for the
WB,
but who would have though that "Charmed" would be leading the pack?
Well,
it did single handily bring sunday back to life for the WB, and though
it's down 14% year to year from its Thursday home, it's up 61% from
what
aired on Sunday last season. As for the rest of the WB's returning
dramas,
only "Angel" and "7th Heaven" have below 300 points. Even the
perpetually
declining "Dawsons Creek" is up 7% over last season. Way to go, WB!
Frasier: Though
it's averaging fewer viewers than it ever had, it's amazing that it's
drawing
anything considering what night it's on. "The In Laws," "Just Shoot Me"
and "Hidden Hills" are non existent in the ratings, which only makes
the
10th season returns of the Seattle doctor look more stunning.
24: It
seems that not airing a show for four months then bringing it back can
be a good thing. fox did just that with this series and its 16% over
last
season's weak returns. If only the same could e said for "Alias," last
season's other critical darling that had a hard time attracting
viewers.
It's down 11% this season.
According To Jim: I'll
be the first to admit that I made a mistake. I scoffed when ABC was
this
the new Tuesday night linch-pin. It'll never work, I thought. Boy, was
I wrong. The first year mediocre "sitcom" turned into a second season
delight,
frequently outdrawing lead-in "8 Simple Rules," winning its slot, and a
few weeks it was even the high rated show on the night in adults.
Though
I still hate the show, you got to give it props for that one.
Losers:
Drew Carey: Just
7 seasons ago, Drew Carey danced his way into the heart of more than 20
million viewers, No he struggles to break 6mil. What happened? Who
knows,
but this season has been especially bad for the Cleveland dork. With
"Drew
Carey" drawing just 170.4 point and "Whose Line" only 222.4, it s clear
that Drew's day in the sun is long gone. Too bad ABC's stuck with him
for
another season....
UPN dramas:
Last season was one for the record books over on the UPN. Both
"Enterprise"
and "Buffy" debuted to huge numbers, but oh my, how times have changed.
Though both are still solid performers, they clearly aren't what they
used
to be. "Enterprise" is at a second to last 185.1 point while "Buffy"
sits
a few spots up at 230.1. While "Enterprise" still has alot of year to
go,
don't count on "Buffy " being around next season.
Just Shoot Me: This
series has been moved around os many times that it should be sponsored
by U-Haul. But every time it was moved, it seemed to flow with
it,
staying fairly constant in viewers. This season, everything changed and
the series is clinging to life. It won't be back, I guarantee it.
And now for the final
tally:
