Gunung Liang Timur &
Barat
(1933m)
Gunung
Liang Timur and Barat is situated in Tanjung Malim, Perak. Tanjung Malim is
about 70 km from Rawang and 300km from Penang. G. LT&LB is one of the
lesser known mountains which can be climbed rather easily. There are two routes
up, one from Kampung Sungai Bill, and another one, a newer route opened by The
Selengor MNS in April 2001, from Kampung Sungai Dara. According to the guide who
brought me, the route from Sg. Bill is further, but less steep. You have to trek
along an old logging road by that route. The Sg Dara route is much shorter, but
also much steeper. It is possible to reach the peak in one long exhausting
day, but people normally climb it in 3 days (2 up 1 down) from sg Dara. The peak
is rather small, and you'll have trouble pitching up tents, as the ground is
also uneven. A flysheet would be a better idea. There are two beiruts, one at G.
Liang Timur , and another at G. Liang Barat, which is about 7 minutes
apart. Below is a 2/3-day trip assuming you climb from Sg. Dara.
First day
From
Tanjung Malim town, drive towards Kampung Slim and Behrang Ulu. You'll be
driving on a new highway, until a right turn into a kampung road. Continue on,
you should pass a signboard "Kampung Ulu Chinggong on your right. Continue
until you reach a small bridge. Just before that bridge, take a right turn, and
go on straight. At the "Y" junction, take the left fork and continue
on, until you reach the gates
of the dam. You can park your car here. There is a small campsite with a flowing
stream further up, on your left. To go to the trail, continue up the tarred
road, until you reach the dam. go straight to the end of the fence and you
should see the trail . The trail to Sungai Liang should take about 2.5 - 3.0
hours. You'll be crossing about 3-4 small streams. The trek to Sungai Liang is
not very steep, but you gain a bit of altitude. Sungai Liang is the last water
source you'll be seing until you reach the next campsite, which is about 4-5
hours away. Sungai Liang is quite big, and strewn with boulders. Take a rest
here first, as the trail is very steep after sg Liang.
After
having a
short rest, continue up the trail. Don't push yourself, as the trail is very
steep, and gets steeper. after about one hour, you'll pass between two small
rocks which stick out from the ground. From there, it is about 25 minutes to
Kubang Babi, a flat area where you can camp, though there is no water
there. From Kubang babi, it is another 2.5 - 3.0 hours to the second
campsite, which is along a ridge. The trek is as steep as the earlier part .
There is water a short way down on the left. The second campsite is rather small
, but can fit perhaps about 5-6 tents. Camp here for the night, or fill up
your water bottles here if you intend to sleep at the peak.
Second day
Assuming you slept at the second campsite , the peak is about 1.5 hours if you
track without your backpack. You'll be climbing more steep slopes , some parts
are so steep
that you slide back down! After 40 minutes of steep slope, you'll hit the ridge
and follow it to the two peaks. You should have plenty of time to rest and enjoy
the view at the peak. There is another peak nearby, Gng.
Tumang Batak, which is about 3 hours (one way) from Liang Timur & Barat. You
should be able to reach the second campsite by 2-3 pm. You can choose to camp
there for another night, or pack up and head down. From the second campsite, it
should take you about 2 hours to reach sg Liang. From sungai Liang, another 2.5
- 3 hours to the dam.
Third day
If
you spent the another night at the second campsite, you should be out at the dam
by early afternoon, if you spent the night at the peak, you should be out by
early evening.
It
is possible to climb right to the peak in one day, but you'll have to be fit.
from the second campsite, I estimate it should take about 3-4 hours to the peak,
with a full backpack.
