Are you a coffee lover? I am. In fact, I consider coffee one of the major food groups. For the past year or two, I've prepared my java the bulletproof coffee way. If you've never tried it that way, it's yum but I digress ... back to the subject. If you have been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, you may want to keep reading while you indulge in a cup of joe.
Mostly, I read
bad news about coffee consumption but a recent report actually had some good news about diabetes and coffee: Coffee may have health benefits for those at risk of type 2 diabetes which is, by far, the most common form of the disease.
According to the UCLA Newsroom website, coffee increases something called SHBG. Unfortunately, four cups a day is needed or the SHBG impact is lessened. Another theory is that something in coffee increases the body's tolerance for glucose.
Contrary to an earlier report I used to site on this page which said decaffeinated coffee is the preferred type, the information on the UCLA site says drinking decaf won't do it. SHBG is apparently a mediator of some kind but from what I read, it's not exactly clear how it works to reduce risk of type 2 diabetes.
I was surprised to learn that coffee has magnesium. In other reports, I noticed that the magnesium content is being explored as a possible reason coffee may help reduce the risks of type 2 diabetes. However, the reason for the reduction in risk of developing type 2 diabetes and coffee remains elusive as of time I'm updating this article on Feb. 3, 2016. For now, suffice to say that drinking coffee seems to provide some protection for those at risk for developing the most common type of diabetes. Source: UCLA Newsroom. Note from Neva: As a health and wellness researcher and writer, I'd suggest organic coffee. I don't say that because organic is better in terms of reducing diabetes risk but because I know that organic coffee will typically be lower in mycotoxins like mold and because organic coffee will not be loaded with pesticides or herbicides.
