NON-PROFIT JOB SEARCH SITE:
Sites Reviewed: SocialService.com
Nonprofitjobs.org
There are very few good websites specific to non-profit jobs,
especially for local jobs. A
new site is under development from the
NonProfit
Center
in Milwaukee
which is very exciting but was not available for review at this time.
Format:
SocialService.com offers
a simple, easy to navigate Home Page which equally addresses employers
and job seekers. Color is
used moderately, yet effectively, so that if you want to print the pages
you won’t be using an entire ink cartridge.
There are two simple buttons on the Home Page to direct Job
Seekers and Employers. Layout
is in paragraph form and easy to read addressing the most relevant
issues such as job posting and resume search for employers, and job
search, job agents and resume posting for job seekers.
The buttons take you to more in depth information in these areas.
Nonprofitjobs.org has an
unusual Home Page in that the graphic, intended to portray diversity,
appears more related to astrology giving the dark black page an
amateurish look. The black
background is hard on the eyes and would be impossible to print without
emptying your print cartridge. However,
its simplicity is rather nice with eight buttons including: search job
postings, post new job, CCC services, member list, post new candidate
profile, resource links, membership benefits and member functions.
If you scroll down you get a paragraph on each of these topics,
including the fee for job posting which employers want to know right
away. The banner is quite
nice, “This site is dedicated to those who serve others”.
Usability:
SocialService.com Home
Page job seeker button takes you to more in depth information on posting
a resume, matching job openings and setting up a job agent notifying you
of new openings. You are
able to review all this information before ever registering.
Employers as well are immediately directed to information on fees
for posting jobs and resume searching, without having to set up a job
posting or registering. Employers
have the option to hotlink their website.
The system retains your job search criteria from your
registration information. A
“new search” or “change search criteria” button would be
helpful.
Nonprofitjobs.org is
easy to navigate. The Home
Page buttons are simple and efficient.
They get job seekers right to the search, without requiring
registration. The
information available to do a job search is quite good.
You can search by city, state or region such as Northeast or
Southwest, however you have to reenter this information you provided
during registration to do a job search.
It is too bad that the “expert system” does not retain this
information. Other search
information includes keywords or job title, work type/mission with an
interesting drop down to select from including such choices as abuse,
advocacy, counseling, foundations. Following
the search you are directed back to the home page, rather than including
a button to allow you to perform another search. You can look up the
mission of member agencies and then connect directly to their website,
where additional national job listings can be accessed.
Marketing:
SocialService.com’s
advertising is limited to charge cards and payment services that can be
used by the employer, a link to college social work programs and a
disturbing SurveyPick link, which draws people in to their site
promoting earning money to fill out surveys, and then later informs you
of a $34.95 membership fee. Site
is updated regularly and employers and job seekers can be instantly
notified at their e-mail address of these updates.
The $55 fee for a 30 day job posting also allows employers to
search the candidate database. Employers
are offered the option of a hotlink directly to their website.
Local job opportunities were minimal.
Only one job match was made for
Wisconsin
, and that was in Spooner, WI.
Nonprofitjobs.org has a
site sponsor, the Neighborhood Reinvestment Corporation, who originally
developed the site. Fee
information is very available, including a pop-up window related to just
rate information. Annual
memberships are available for $1,000/year which can be cost effective to
employers posting multiple annual job postings and includes all of their
national sites and job postings. Individual
listing are also available at $125 for sixty days.
A nice feature is that as a member employers can also request
help with reference and background checks. Their
marketing statement indicates that “based on membership constituencies
job opportunities at Nonprofitjobs.org will be proactively networked
with target audiences both on and off the internet.
Job seekers can hotlink directly to members’ websites where
additional national job opportunities may be listed, however, no local
positions were found.
Employer Access:
SocialService.com
provides its fees for services right up front on the Home Page.
A button directs employers to more information on job postings,
discount fees, searching resumes and resume notification.
The registration page is fairly simple to complete.
Employers can hotlink to their website.
Nonprofitjobs.org offers
upfront fee and membership information to employers.
Posting a job opening appears to be simple to navigate and allows
for ample information. A
direct link is provided to the employer’s website.
Individual job postings at $125 for a 60 day listing are fairly
reasonable, and the annual $1,000 membership can be cost effective if
posting multiple national openings.
Additional services are available to employers such as the
reference and background check assistance already noted.
The site is more beneficial to national associations and
organizations than local nonprofits.
Job Seeker Access:
SocialService.com
provides a simple, yet effective Home Page easy for job seekers to
navigate. A lot of
information about the site is available without having to register.
However, information on how many jobs they list and where was not
found. Buttons allow job
seekers easy access to additional information before registration is
required, including access to searching jobs.
Jobs you are interested in are easily managed in a Job Inbox, you
can easily post and update your resume or even delete your account with
easy access. The job seeker
is not able to narrow the search to
Milwaukee
County
and must look at all of
Wisconsin
.
Nonprofitjobs.org offers
lots of information and easy navigation to job seekers.
You can search jobs before registering and can define your search
to national regions or specific cities.
Job seekers can learn a lot about large organizations by linking
directly to their websites. It
is easy to post your resume; however, you must reenter job search
criteria each time you search. Links
to additional job search information such as Career Assistance,
Conferences and Employment Resources are good, although they are very
generic and not always specific to nonprofit job seekers.
