     Railway are a convenient and quick means of transporting people and goods over long distances. In Pakistan railways are concentrated in plain areas.

     The railway network comproses 8775 route Km, with 808 Railway stations. Out of total route 7766Km are broad gauge, (5 Feet 3 inches wide) 446 Km meter gauge (3 Feet 3 inches wide) and 563/611 Km narrow gauge (2 feet 6 inches wide).

     Pakistan railway has 638 Railway engines, out of these 544 are Diesel and 75 steam engines. It has 2275 passanger carriages and 26883 freight wagons.

     The following are the main railway routes of Pakistan.

1.PESHAWAR-KARACHI:1681 Kilometres (1045 Miles):-

Important stations on this toute are Peshawar, Nowshera, Taxila, Rawalpindi, Jhelum, Lala Musa, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Lahore, Shiwal, Multan, Bahawalpur, Rohril Khairpur, Nawabshah, Hyderabab, Karachi. From Lala Musa, an alternative route (428Km) runs via Sargodha and Faisalabad to rejoin the main route at Khanewal. Railway line from Raiwind to Khanewqal is electrified and from Samasata to Karachi is double line.

2.KARACHI-HABIBKOT, (520 KILOMETRES):-

This route runs via Kotri, dadu, Moen-jo-Daro, Larkana to join the Rohri,-Queta route at Habib Kot where it links with the route of Quetta.

3.ROHRI-QUETTA, (385KILOMETRES):-

This route runs via Habib Kot, Shikarpur, Jaccobabad, Sibi, Bolan pass, Spezand and Quetta. The tract os cpmtomied frp, Quetta to Chaman, and Queta to Zhob.

Another route runs from Quetta to Zahidan (Iran) via Nushki, Dalbandin, Nakkundi, Taftan, Mirjawa (Iran). This route is 323 Kilometres long.
