~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Answer for 4/8: What now-commonplace item was called "Congreves" when the inventor first sold them in 1827? Hint: They were later called "lucifers" when marketed by someone else, since the inventor never patented his idea. Matches. In the 19th century, English chemist and pharmacist John Walker accidently came up with the thought of coating the end of a wooden stick with antimony sulfide, potassium chlorate, gum and starch. Once dried, he found he could ignite a fire by striking the stick anywhere. He called them "Congreves" after Congreve's rocket. 47 players answered correctly. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Question for 4/9: The cast included Michael Caine, Henry Fonda, Patty Duke, Richard Chamberlain, Olivia de Havilland, Richard Widmark, Katharine Ross, Ben Johnson, Slim Pickens, Jose Ferrer, Lee Grant, Fred MacMurray - seven Oscar winners in that bunch! Trivia for 4/7
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Answer for 4/6: Norm Peterson was famous for always being in the same barstool on Cheers. But Norm also had a favorite eating establishment, even becoming upset when it was going to be shut down. What was the name of Norm's favorite restaurant? Okay, accepting two answers today! Originally, I had just the one I remembered: The Hungry Heifer. A waitress who worked at the Heifer and occasionally at Cheers as well said that the workers there knew Norm as "the guy who comes back". But many players also found Little Wally's Pup and Burger, of which he said "This has to be my favorite restaurant in the whole city.'' Cliff responds, "Come on, I thought the Hungry Heifer was your favorite.'' Norm answers "Yeah, sure, you know, you got folks from out of town or something, you want to impress them, you want to sit down, maybe. But if, you know, you just want to power down the animal fat, Wally's rules.'' 44 players answered correctly. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Question for 4/7: Hanako died on July 7, 1977 at the ripe old age of 226 years old! Trivia for 4/6
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Answer for 4/5: What is meant when something or someone is said to be of the "first water"? First water is first grade, first class, or of the best in its class. It is mainly used to describe the highest grade or quality in a precious stone, especially a diamond. Transparency is highly desirable in diamonds, and when they are nearly as transparent as water, they are known as diamonds of the first water. As the transparency decreases, we get second or third water. Hence figuratively, something or someone of the first water is first grade, first class, or of the best in its class. 43 players answered correctly. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Question for 4/6: Norm Peterson was famous for always being in the same barstool on Cheers. Trivia for 4/5
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Answer for 4/2: From player George Malits: Ambidextrous pitcher Pat Venditte threw with both arms for the Yankees earlier this week, giving up one run in 1 1/3 innings during a 9-6 split-squad loss to the Atlanta Braves. If Venditte makes it to the major leagues, he wouldn't be the first pitcher to throw as a left-hander and right-hander. A player who pitched for Cincinnati, Montreal, San Diego, Texas, Philadelphia, Boston and the Yankees from 1981-95 was a righty throughout his career. But he pitched from the left side for two batters in the second-to-last game of his career. Can you name this pitcher? 34 players answered correctly. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Question for 4/5: What is meant when something or someone is said to be of the "first water"? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
