An old owl sounded its cry as the girls sat down on the log benches
around the
fire. They had all put on old sweat-pants and T-shirts to sleep in. Before
Rain started playing, Lauren said softly, "You know, I was listening to
'Anywhere For You' on the way here. I almost went off the road!"
"Let me guess. You were thinkin' that Brian was singin' it to you,
right?" Jade
smiled.
Blushing sheepishly, Lauren said, "Yeah, but Jade, you're known to
totally zone
out whenever you hear Kevin sing a solo!"
Jade smiled, nodding her head in agreement. The girls cracked up right
then. It
was always funny listening to Lauren and Jade when they teased each other about
their BSB crushes.
Jade grinned and said, "Well, Rain sleeps with this little pic of Howie
under her
pillow!"
Rain answered the smug, curious glances by saying, "Yes I do. He keeps my
dreams safe!"
"Okay now. Since we're all confessing tonight, I might as well say that
I've
drawn murals of Nick on my walls and ceiling." Amy said, looking at the
ground.
"My turn! I've stitched A.J.'s full name onto every pair of underwear
that I
own!" Angel smiled.
Once again, laughter filled the woods. Little did the girls know, the
Backstreet
Boys themselves had heard them! They had been hiding on the edge of the
woods.
Once the laughter died down, Rain picked up her guitar. Cradling it like
it was a
newborn, she asked, "Okay. What do ya wanna hear?"
" 'I'll Never Break Your Heart'!" they said.
They all became quiet as Rain began to play the intro. Meanwhile, the
guys, who were still hiding in the woods, whispered to one another for a
second, but that was before Brian said, "So, are we gonna scare these guys or
what?"
"How are we gonna do it though? It can't be too scary," Howie whispered.
"Well, Brian does a really good impression of a bear," Nick suggested
with an
evil grin on his face. Creeping over to the very edge of the tree line,
Brian let out a
ferocious growl.
Screaming, the girls looked up and scanned the area around their
campsite.
Lauren said to Amy, "I don't see anything. Do you?"
"No. Do you, Angel?" came her whisper.
"Nope. Jade?"
"No way. Rain, do you see anything?"
"Not a thing."
Shaking off their fear, the girls all re-took their places around the fire.
As soon as Rain began to play her guitar again, Brian let out another growl.
It was louder and longer than the first one. Howie, Kevin, A.J., and Nick
all started laughing quietly when the girls screamed again.
"What the . . ." Angel said.
"I don't know, but if any of us hear that noise one more time, I'm gonna
head to
my tent and stay there for the rest of the night." Amy sighed nervously.
"I know. If I hear it, I'm gonna have to jump right through this fire to
get to my
tent!" Rain said quietly. Even though she wasn't the oldest in the group,
she was seen as the leader, and she knew that if the others thought that she
was scared, it would only make them more scared than they already were.
Just then, there was yet another growl from Brian. "That's it!" Rain
yelled. She
jumped up and dove right through the fire, burning her bare feet. The others
ran for their tents as Rain rolled to her feet and raced for her the security
of her tent's open flap.
The guys laughed when they saw the girls run to hide. "I hope that one
girl didn't
hurt her feet," Howie said quietly.
The guys then headed over to the campfire. A.J. walked around to where
Rain
had been sitting and found her guitar sitting upright beside the bench she
had been sitting on. He gently picked it up, looked at it, and then
whispered, "Hey Howie, come here and look at this."
Howie walked over to where A.J. and took the guitar from A.J.'s hands. He
turned it over to find his own signature, complete with the little
smiley-face thing he
always drew above the "I" in his name. "I remember this thing. I threw it
to this girl that was in the 2nd row at a concert about 3 years ago. This
older lady was fightin' her for it, but that girl held on to it with all her
might."
Looking up, A.J. said softly, "You don't think . . ."
"I'm almost certain that the girl playing it was the girl that caught it
at the concert." Howie whispered.
"Wow. Can you imagine what they would do if they looked out of their
tents and
saw us sitting here? They would freak out!" Kevin said.
"I have an idea. Let's sing a song for them and see if we can get them
to come
out of their tents. It would kinda make up for scaring them so badly," Brian
sighed.
"But we don't want them to see us, so we have to do it softly at first,
then build
up to normal volume, okay?" A.J. said.
They all agreed. Howie took the guitar and sat down beside the others.
They all
were sitting with their backs to the line of tents that were facing the fire..
Slowly, Howie started playing the intro for "I'll Never Break Your Heart."
"Darn it! I left my guitar out there!" Rain shouted to the girls in the
other tents.
"Rain, you have to get it! Whatever is out there might get it and
destroy it!" Amy
yelled.
"I know, but . . . what in the heck is that? Is there a radio on
somewhere?" Rain asked. There was a softly-playing melody coming from up by
the campfire.
"I don't know but it sounds like the intro for 'I'll Never Break Your
Heart',
doesn't it?" Jade asked.
Lauren laughed as she said, "Wouldn't it just make your day if we went
out there
to get your guitar and the real Backstreet Boys were out there?"
The guys, who were sitting there and could hear her, all looked at
each other with
widened eyes. They hadn't been discovered already, had they?
Rain decided to see where the noise was coming from. She slowly stuck
her head out of her tent door and looked over to the fire, where she saw 5
shadowed figures sitting there, facing the fire. Through the shadows, she
could barely tell that the apparently shortest one had his hair in a
ponytail. She climbed out of her tent and started over to the shadows.
Amy, Angel, Lauren, and Jade all quietly got out of their tents as well.
Rain was
almost to them when Angel said with a whisper, "Rain, be careful."
Rain turned around to face the other girls. Behind her, she didn't see
the 5 figures stand up. However, she did see the petrified looks on the
faces of the girls she was facing. "What's wrong? What, do I have a snake
on my shoulder?" Rain said with a smile, trying to ease the tension she felt.
"Ummm . . . Rain? Turn around . . . slowly . . . . " Angel whispered.
Rain sighed and turned around to see 5 smiling faces looking at her.
Catching the scream that was in her throat, Rain dropped to the ground in a
limp heap at Howie's feet.
