She stood in silence at the cliffs, the cold wind snapping and whipping the hem of her robes and cloak... the chill seemed to go right through her yet, it went unnoticed for the moment. Kerina watched the spectacular purple hues that so vividly announced the dawning of a new day. It was a breathtaking sight... one that held you in awe, making all else seem so insignificant. Even her four guards had ceased their grumbling as they too watched the birth of the new day. Darius and Marcus had accompanied her many times to this same spot with only the light of the moons and stars to guide the way... Kerina knew the path like the back of her hand... each twisting turn... each outcropping of rock... that root of the gnarled old temwood tree that would trip you if you didn't watch for it. The other two guards had only been in her employ since returning to Treve and were not all that pleased to be up so early. As the brilliant purples gave way to the more mundane shades of gray of a winters day, she sighed softly and smiled. The shifting of one of her guards drew her attention for a moment, turning, she found herself almost hoping it was the man she met here last night....
The coming of a new day :: the day began as so many others, although now he was back in Treve and the uneasy feeling he had had for the past few years seemed to ease within him, the calmness of the morning edged through the window, casting the first rays of light over the floor and then up along the couch, upon which he laid, the fur draped over his hip, one knee bent, exposing his leg to the faint early light, his arms were folded up, his hands behind his head as he lay awake, watching the dawning of the new day, his thoughts had been tangled recently, spanning the years quickly like memories do, never finding their roots in any one place as they seem to haunt your mind when the quite moments creep in, his brother came to mind when he first awoke, having been trapped in a dream, caught in a fight, the sounds of steel clashing around him, the blood... his brother, as he fell to their enemies sword... all too real rousing him from sleep, and as the stillness washed over him and the battle again slipped back deep in his mind, grey-black eyes lingered on the window across from his couch, watching the black give way to grey, the grey give way to blues and then purples and finally the yellows and oranges cut into the sky announcing the new day, a smile creased his lips, again his thoughts drawn to his brother for a moment as the cliffs came to mind, time spent there both calm and heated with arguments which always faded before they would descend the winding path back toward their camp, it was a refuge of sorts, for both of them... and it was why he had left, after coming to that spot he knew so well, though alone after the death of his brother, perhaps the loss was too much, or because the rocks and land and sky had heard so many of their conversations, their voices still echoed and whispered to him as he stood on the high peak alone, looking out over the glory that was Treve before that vision was locked away in his minds eye and he left the land of his birth, ...and now once more his feet had carried him while his mind was caught on other things, and when he realized where he stood and the silence of his last time there that was once so deafening gave way to the call of the winds, the sounds of the trees and grass swaying, the cry of the wild tarns that flew high over head, he knew... he was home, as the calmness of his childhood haven soothed him, the sounds of her approach were unheard, when his eyes did finally rest upon her, her face bared to the cool winds, silken hair blown back, he could do little more than watch her, as if she were some dream invading his waking moments, and yet he smiled, as thoughts of those angered blue eyes came to mind... and as his eyes followed the rise of Lar Torvis beyond the window, he wondered if she too saw the coming of this new day... :: |
