The Crescent-class is a recent addition to Starfleet's support vessels. Following the Dominion War and the Borg encursion into Sector 001 it was beleived that a more sturdy fighter was required to tackle the problems presented in recent times. The older Trainer craft converted to use as fighters during the Dominion War proved that such methods could bolster the strength of larger ships during combat situations. Individual ships in the field would virtually have their own small "fleet".

Currently only a small number of ships have been equipped with them, in consideration of shuttlebay space and combat position. More practical testing is recomended, though there are neither the resources nor the time to test under controlled conditions.
