HRW Guards - Duties
Duties of the Guards

Guard Captain
The Captain has the responsibility of keeping everything running smoothly, of supervising all the guards and coordinating the schedules. She reports to the Weyrwoman and to the Headwoman about the Guards' activities and hands out general orders to her subordinates. Also she coordinates the patrolling of High Reaches Weyr's borders with its neighbors' Guard Captains.
Sergeants
A sergeant takes his or her orders from the Captain, but also has a degree of autonomy when it comes to training and directing guards and recruits. S/he'll do the daily/weekly duty roster and keep taps on the guards/recruits assigned to her/him, reporting back to the Captain about their progress. Sergeants also perform a part of the grunt work; patrolling, drilling, standing guard, etc., but not to the extent that the lower ranked guards do.
Guards
The guards are the police force of the Weyr. NPCly High Reaches Weyr has around forty guards to keep weyrfolk and dragonkind safe from harm. They're the ones who stand guard in the middle of the coldest winter night, the ones who escort messengers when bandits are on the prowl in the mountains and the ones who do most of the training of the new recruits. Since guards are closer to recruits in training and drilling, they report back to the sergeant on their progress and advices whether or not a recruit is ready for promotion.
Recruits
These are the rookies, just starting their life as guards. Most of a recruit's time is spent training and drilling, and practicing standing guard (i.e. standing still in one place for a long period of time). S/he is constantly under surveillance from superiors, monitoring their progress. Only if no other option is available to him/her is a recruit allowed to break up a fight. Her/his first action must always be to send for a senior guard to help out in the situation (NPC if no-one else is around). A recruit often gets the night watch, and often get the patrol that bring him/her up the thousands of stairs to the rim of the Weyr. To build character many older guards say, but the truth may just be that those older guards have had enough of the 'beautiful view' from the rim…
