The Deathbringers are the elite warriors of Kul. While the slave warriors overcome their foes by force of numbers, Deathbringers overcome them by skill and tactics.

Famed for their brutality, the Deathbringers are soldiers to fear. Only a select few can join, not because of any right of birth but simply because few have the stomach for mindless carnage and torture. Also only truly skilful warriors with blades are allowed in, but many selectors will agree to train young fighters with potential.

A Deathbringer is easily recognised on sight. They wear black enamelled plate mail, with full-face helmets. When seen their faces are cut by numerous scars. These are part of the initiation ceremony of the Deathbringers. They are branded on the cheeks, and if the burns form into the runes of Nagharos, the initiate is accepted. Of course, the evil clerics and priests are not above cheating if a particularly skilled warrior is doubtful of failing the test. It is also a useful way of dissuading minor sons of pushy nobles, who the priests are unable to deter frontally from joining the force.

In battle the Deathbringers are extremely disciplined. Their tacticians are skilled beyond even the Kaylonic Knights themselves. They fight uniformly, as one line, and all orders are instantly obeyed.

As far as weapons are concerned, different divisions use different weapons, but by far the most uniform are the combination of long-sword and shield. However entire regiments can be seen bearing great-swords or axes, or even more bizarre weapons such as flails.

The Deathbringers always fight on their feet rather than horseback, both because it is the standard practise to do so and because of the lack of good horses in Kul. The only mounted Deathbringers are the high commanders. Very few use missile weapons, but almost all of those use the standard-issue heavy crossbow. Such units are held in some contempt by more combat-based warriors, but those who have seen the results of an expertly placed shot to the lower bowel do not show this contempt in front of the missile-troops.

The leaders of the Deathbringers are rumoured to be seven evil Clerics, called the Deathlords. They are masters of evil magic, and are second only to the High Priest of Nagharos and his close advisers. They can use telepathy expertly and can cause fear and panic throughout whole armies.

Certainly the Deathbringers are a force to be respected.
