About three decades ago, ArchYandrite Forstus I decided in his wisdom that the Kaylonic Elite Knights could not patrol the streets of the Empire on their own. There were too few Knights, and crime at the time was rife. Therefore, he established the order of the Night Wardens, or Watchmen as they are more commonly known.

Essentially policemen, the Watchmen patrol the streets of all major towns and cities, stopping crime and preventing riots. Each is armed with a club and a sword - the club their primary weapon, so that not too much blood is spilled in the ArchYandrite's name. The sword is supposed to be a last resort, if a few truncheon-blows do not have their intended effect, but some Watchmen are far too blood-thirsty to worry about that, while others are uncertain about when they should use their secondary weapon.

However, not all of the Watchmen are as honourable as their job description suggests. In recent years they have become more and more corrupt. Far too many are easily bought and can be bribed to "oversee" or "miss" a crime. And not all of the buying off goes on at the ground level. At least one of the Watchmen commanders is thought to be in the pay of a foreign nation, most widely believed to be Kul, though which one the ArchYandrite's spies cannot find out.

Normally the Watchmen are armoured in chainmail, with the coat of arms of their city or town emblazoned on a tunic over the top. However, due to gold constrictions, and greedy members of the nobility, many wear cheaper armour, such as leather armour, or none at all.
