Cities of
Oracan:
GANIKAZAL Capitol of Oracan
The largest city of the Oracan Magocracy, it is also
the capitol of the High Orcs. Ganikazal is controlled by a ruling council
of 13, comprised of 12 sorcerers and the High Priest of Ghoroth. The
current head of the council the seer Ravana. She uses her abilities in
divination to discern the best course for Ganikazal, and all of Oracan as
well.
Ganikazal is best known for its enormous Free Market,
a heavily guarded area where members of all races are welcome to gather and
trade. The Free Market is the largest trading area in this part of the
continent; only distant Kalvaria has guilds and markets of comparable size.
It is not unusual to see humans, goblins, lizardfolk, kobolds, ogres,
dwarves, and gnolls in the market area. The high orc guards are often
supplemented by mounted patrols and trained dogs.
Ganikazal is a scholarly and religious center in many
ways as well, with several respected and traditional religious orders being
firmly established. The temple to Ghoroth is one of the largest in Oracan,
and other powerful temples are dedicated to Chark, Nuy, Kemiyo and Zaden.
Several areas of Ganikazal are ruined, the legacy of
the dragon Anzon’s rampage through the city. These ruined areas have become
centers of activity by guilds of thieves.
CADAY Port City
A moderately successful port city, Caday fails to
truly thrive. The main reasons for this are that few High Orcs naturally
take to maritime activities like fishing or pearl diving. Secondly, the
harbor at Caday does not often host trading vessels; an occasional ship
from Trayess or some enterprising tribe is the full extent. A council of 9
rules Caday, with the sage Xatamek presiding.
Caday leans a little more towards the good and light
side of things than most High Orc communities. It is home to the Champion
of Teru, the paladin Padisev. Temples are established to honor Teru, Aia
Brightheart, and the healer Kemiyo.
GIEYADA Large City
This city is found on the banks of two rivers, amid
dense forest. It has a more martial tradition than most other communities
in Oracan. A council of 11 rules the city, including the paladin-sorcerer
Gaella. Although Gaella is the youngest member of the council, she also
directs it by virtue of her exceptional talents.
Despite extensive logging operations, hardly a dent
is made in the surrounding forest, which grows back at a preternaturally
fast pace. Barges from Gieyada ply the three nearby rivers. Prominent
temples in this city are dedicated to Andamakazin and Chark.
CORASSA Town
A mining town that produces large quantities of
copper, Corassa is noteworthy for being the closest civilized community to
Mount Ezanda. Even at this distance from the peak, the skies are
occasionally brightened by strokes of magic lightning and other eerie
celestial effects. A council of 5 sorcerers, led by the wizened old
Tolgaud, supervises the industry of this town. Ghoroth and Zaden have temples
here.
KEYMARK Town
One of the smallest and most distant outposts of the
Oracan empire, Keymark is also one of the most profitable. Located deep in
the rugged an treacherous peaks of an inhospitable mountain range, Keymark mines
gems and platinum from harsh mines. Although these products bring much
wealth to the town, even more is generated by trading with intelligent
beasts and giants that make the peaks their home, but lack certain staples.
A council of 3 guide Keymark’s activities, led by Stranton IV.
The only religious center in Keymark is the Temple of
Nuy. The Priestess of Nuy, Terenika, has a reputation as a vivacious and
daring wench who employs and accompanies adventurers on various quests to
keep Keymark safe.
MOUNT EZANDA’S
TEMPLE Ruins
The ruins of the great temple at Mount Ezanda predate
the high orc civilization. The legends claim that the temple was built in
homage to a powerful demigod known as Agiyiga. High orc legends also name
this entity as their patriarch. Whether true or not, the ruins are
unquestionably the site of much bizarre magical activity. The stone columns
and structure of the temple have been fused into a substance harder than
any known stone or metal by the magical energies. Elementals appear and
disappear, apparently at random, seeming to patrol the temple area. Several
times a year, there are enormous discharges of magical energy, in the form
of celestial lights or magical lightning. These displays are visible from
miles away.
Numerous legends have sprung up about Mount Ezanda’s
Temple. Some say that the arches and portals in the temple have the power
to transport those who pass through them to other planes or times. In the
center of the temple garden is a great pool; this is said to act as a scrying
device or to heal those who drink from it. Perhaps the most unusual of all
the legends; some whisper that the bones of Agiyiga were taken and used to
fashion potent artifacts, but the skull of Agiyiga was never found, and is
still hidden somewhere at the old temple site…
OZAN Town
This
small town is pastoral and quiet, eking out a quiet life of herding and
farming. A council of 3 sorcerers, all of minor talent, oversee affairs
here. Any one of the three would gladly forfeit their position to a better
qualified candidate, could they locate a willing soul. The town is best
known as the residence of the retired Oracan hero Charden. The elderly
sorcerer is unwilling to take up public office, and instead amuses himself
in his garden.
Ozan has small shrines to Kemiyo, Ghoroth, and Aia
Brightheart.
MAJIMARK Town
The
home of alchemists and scholars, Majimark is considered a pioneer in the
production of magic and magic items. The Sorcerer’s Institute has struck a
deal with the Merchant’s guild, so Majimark is a place where one can hire
sorcerers to cast spells, or if you fancy something a bit different, you
can browse the shops for potions and scrolls. A council of 7 control the
entrepreneurial spirit of Majimark, with Indigo Vynolia as the leading
sorcereress.
The prosperous town is also well supported
spiritually, with places of worship to Andamakazin, Nuy, and Ghoroth
existing to serve the populace.
AGIYIGA’S
RETREAT Town
According to the legends of the High
Orcs, this town is founded on the location that the five orcish heroes
retreated to after the death of Agiyiga at Mount Ezanda. Whether true or
just legend, the populace of this town are particularly knowledgeable on
the myths and trivia surrounding those ancient orcs. A council of five
governs the town, led by Kayla the Witch.
Aside from the temple of
Ghoroth, the only other note-worthy structure is the Kurvhosau Embassy. As
the closest settlement to the border of that dwarven kingdom, Agiyiga’s
Retreat hosts the dwarven embassy. Since it is considered an unfavorable
post, the four dwarven ambassadors are rotated out on a yearly basis.
Despite surface similarities, the High Orcs are nothing like their brutish
cousins, so an interesting cycle has developed in this town. In the spring,
fond farewells are said to the old ambassadors and new dwarves come in,
being surly, angry and bitter. Everyone tries to put up with them. Sometime
in the summer, the dwarves thaw out a bit, realizing that high orcs aren’t
actually all that objectionable. They are different, with their prattling
on about magic, but not really bad folks. By fall, a few tentative
friendships have formed, and everybody relaxes. The dwarves realize that
Oracan is not such a terrible post after all. By spring, the old dwarven
ambassadors are shipped back to Kurvhosau and a new, hostile group of
dwarves move into the embassy cursing their luck.
