Chapter 10:

Xander woke up to the nice feeling of a body plastered to his back. It was nice to wake up to someone like this. Xander looked over at the clock. It was already eight in the evening and dark out. Spike was still asleep which Xander found unusual for a vampire.

Most that he knew were up and wired by this time. He decided not to move around. It was nice to just stay in Spike's arms for a little while. It was comforting.

"You know I'm awake." Xander stiffened at the sound of Spike's dry voice.

"Um... I thought you were asleep." Xander said nervously.

"I've been watching you sleep for that last couple of hours." Spike said.

"Why?"

"I don't know I just felt like it. You look so... peaceful when you sleep." Xander turned in Spike's arms and looked at him.

"I usually have nightmares. I'm not sure what they are of, but I always have them. It's never exactly... peaceful in my world." Xander said lying his head on Spike's chest.

Spike began to play with his hair and Xander closed his eyes at the soft feel of Spike's slightly callused fingers rubbing his scalp.

"Really, didn't seem to have any nightmares at all. You've been... peaceful."

"Hmmm, must be the company then." "Still don't think you should be feeling safe around me, pet. I mean evil vampire. Could kill you at any second." Spike said. Xander opened his eyes and sighed. He sat up a bit so he could look Spike in the face.

"Do you want to... kill me that is. If that's all you want from me... go ahead." Xander said tilting his head to expose his neck.

Spike stiffened. He could practically hear the blood following just under that deliciously tanned skin. Here was Xander offering himself up to Spike and all Spike could do was sigh and close his eyes in confusion.

"Don't..."

"What is it too tempting for you?" Xander said a little jokingly.

"No, I just... it's confusing is what it is."

"Why's that?" Because I'm supposed to want to kill you. I'm supposed to want to suck you dry and leave nothing but a bleeding broken corpse."

"And you don't want to... kill me that is." Xander said. Spike closed his eyes again and took an unneeded breath.

"No, I want to protect you. I want to keep you safe. I want to hurt anything that touches you. I want to go out and find ever single vampire that has touched you and kill them. There's violent thoughts, but none of them are directed at you." Spike said.

"And that's such a bad thing?" Xander said his voice slightly desperate.

"Yes and no. I mean it's great for you... and me. Because I really... like you. You're great. You're perfect..."

"I honestly don't think..."

"You are! Bloody hell you're amazing and you can't even see it and it makes you even more precious. But all that aside, it's confusing to me because it's not what I'm supposed to want as a vampire." Spike said.

"I take it vampires don't keep humans around very often." Xander said.

"As pets, yeah. I mean the humans that do get kept around are turned after a few weeks."

"And you don't want that from me? You don't want to turn me?" Xander asked.

"It's not that I don't think you'd make a great vampire. I think you'd make an excellent vampire. And that's probably not what you want to hear, but it's the truth. It's not that I don't want to keep you around forever, because I wouldn't mind that. You and me together forever. And I know that sounds..."

"Crazy?"

"Yeah crazy, but I wouldn't mind. I really wouldn't mind. And that scares me."

"Why, I mean yeah okay the thought scares me too, but... I've never felt this way about anyone before." Xander said and Spike could see the total honesty in his eyes.

"You're young. You'll find something better."

"If that's what you're scared of maybe you should do a reality check on my life..."

"If I were to get you away from your life... because I have the power to do that... you'd want more than I could give you. Bloody hell you deserve more than I can give you." Spike said.

"Don't you think that I should be able to decide what I deserve?" Xander asked a little put out.

"You're a kid. What do you know about what you need?" Spike muttered.

"A whole fucking lot! I've been taking care of myself for awhile now. Why do you have to... why do you have to minimize everything I've ever been through?" Xander asked.

"I'm not trying to do anything like that. I can see you've been through a lot. And I want to help you."

"You are helping me. You being here is helping me."

"But that's not supposed to be true. I'm what hurts you Xander. I'm what's touched you and hurt you and used you time and time again. You're not supposed to want me around." Spike said getting frustrated with the conversation he was having.

He needed a cigarette. He got up and picked up his pants, pulling them on as he searched the pockets for a cigarette. When he found one, he flicked open his Zippo lighter and lit it.

He put it to his lips and took a long drag before looking back in Xander's direction. Xander was looking peaceful, on his back his eyes closed and his clothes totally wrinkled. Spike smiled at the picture he presented.

"You're not like them and you know it." Xander whispered.

"Well, yeah I guess you're right." Spike said taking another drag from his cigarette.

"So, what's the probably?"

"I'm not exactly sure. I know there has to be one."

"I don't see one."

"You're not looking clearly pet. I mean you're too enamored by my charms." Spike said smirking.

Xander opened one eye and turned his head in Spike's direction. He smiled at Spike before rolling his eyes at Spike.

"You know you're full of yourself. I can't believe I'm allowing myself to fall into like with someone who's full of himself." Xander muttered.

"Fall into like?" Spike asked.

"Yeah it's the stage right before love."

"Love?"

This made Xander sit up and open both eyes.

"Please tell me I don't have to explain the concept of love to you. I mean the soda machine was bad enough..."

"I know what love is you git." Spike said with a smile on his face.

"Oh, well that's good."

"You think you love me?" Spike asked.

"Okay entering deep conversation. Hey you got another one of those?" Xander asked pointing to Spike's cigarette.

Spike shook his head and threw Xander the pack and the lighter. Xander immediately took out a cigarette and lit it.

"So, back to my question."

"Right, well no I don't think I love you. that's why I said I was in like, but I don't think I'm that far off. Funny, I've only known you for a few weeks... wait has it even been a week... well whatever it's been a short time and you're already turning my life upside down." Xander said.

"You shouldn't fall in love with me, pet. I'm a bad bad man." Spike said.

"Yeah well we can't help who we love. I think someone famous said that. Could've been Shakespeare... or I might just be saying Shakespeare cause he's so famous." Xander babbled.

"You know I think I could love you too." Spike said honestly.

"Well than we're on the same page than." Xander said with a smile on his face. He took a drag of his cigarette and enjoyed the silence for a bit.

"You really shouldn't smoke those, pet. Bad for your human lungs."

"I guess. So now that we're done with the heavy talk, what do you want to do?" Xander asked.

"You must be hungry." Spike said.

"Yeah I could eat." Xander said with a sly smirk on his face that Spike found sexy.

"Then I'll order us something." Spike said as he went to reach for the phone. Xander grabbed his hand.

"Well I wasn't exactly talking about food." Xander said that smirk still in place.

"When you get this bold pet."

"I'm burning on the cigarette. Nicotine always gives me a jolt. So in about five seconds I'm going to start getting embarrassed by what I said and back out."

"Well we can't have that now can we."

The Anointed One was not pleased. He had lost a lot of minions with the attack on the school and he was banking highly on Spike being able to get that book. The Anointed One wasn't stupid. He knew of Spike's reputation.

Everyone knew of Spike's reputation. He was a favored by Angelus. Drusilla was crazy and Penn was crazy, but Spike had just enough intelligence to become a real threat. Angelus knew it and so did the Anointed One. The thing was Spike wasn't much more than a shell of his former self and this puzzled the Anointed One.

Oh sure he had heard the stories of how close Spike was with his Sire, but it seemed as though he couldn't go on without her. The Anointed One knew she was dead. The Master had talked of Drusilla fondly and often. So it wasn't a surprise when Spike walked through the doors sans his Sire and looking slightly less fierce the how the Anointed One would imagine the Slayer of Slayers would look.

Because a vampire that had killed two Slayer in his time should have been fierce looking. Should have been cunning. Shouldn't have been willing to submit as he had. He should have been ready to take over, but instead he rarely spent time in the factory and when he did spend time in the factory he played the part of the dutiful minion.

The Master had talked of Spike before on several occasions, but his tone was never a good one. It was more of one filled with contempt. He even spoke of Angelus in a higher regard and Angelus had a soul. Spike had been a loose canon one, which the Master had instructed Angelus to get rid of, but rarely did Angelus listen to the Master.

He had already taken a liking to the fledging he called Willie and refused to kill him. The Master often talked about how useless the males in the line had been. So the Anointed One knew that Spike wasn't held in high regard when it came to the Order of Aurelius, but he was a Master vampire and that in and of itself demanded respect.

Spike didn't want respect though. He wanted protection and a place to hang his hat, but he didn't want respect. In fact he often downplayed his strength in front of the other minions. It was rare for a Master Vampire to do that. It had puzzled the Anointed One for quite some time, but than there was that boy.

The one that was Joe's. The Anointed One knew of Joe and his bosses. It was hard not to know about them. They practically ran a lot of what went on with the vampire community, which annoyed the heck out of the older blood lines. Nothing seemed to be the same as it was when the blood lines ruled. It was all new and unsettling to the older ones.

The boy was something that the Anointed One had smelled on Spike even before he had come to the factory. Spike fancied him, the Anointed One could tell. If the information that had been gathered was anything to go by, it was easy to see that Spike was protecting him.

Perhaps Spike thought of him as a pet. That the Anointed One could understand, but it seemed the boy was even more than that. Spike had killed his own kind because the touched what he assumed was his. You didn't do that unless mates and bonding was involved.

Considering the boy still worked for Joe, the Anointed One guessed Spike didn't even know what bonding was let alone how to perform it. All he was doing was protecting the boy. Angelus must not have taught him about that.

It was understandable considering Angelus didn't put too much stock into it. Spike's behavior was not one that could just be let go though. He submitted and he did so willingly. The consequences of his actions had to be severe.

"What should we do when we see him?" A minion to his right asked.

The Anointed One looked into the eager face. Most of the minions and Spike didn't get along. The Anointed One smiled pleasantly at him.

"Kill him."

"We're getting no where Buffy. I mean don't you think you should talk to Angel. See if he knows anything?" Willow asked calmly.

She could never tell where Buffy and Angel stood with each other.

"I've tried contacting him, Wills, but he's been Mister Avoidy for a while know. I mean it's gotten really bad since that whole parent teacher fiasco. I mean he hasn't talked to me in three days." Buffy said.

It was now Saturday and their search for the mysterious demon hunter was hitting dead end after dead end. He just didn't want to be found.

"Oh, you think maybe he knows something about that?" Jesse asked slightly disinterested in anything to do with Angel. It wasn't that he didn't like Angel, but some times the guy could get on his nerves.

"I don't think so. I mean I think he would tell me if he knew something. I mean I still don't know why they attacked." Buffy said.

"No you don't. nothing was taken. They didn't make any claims that they just wanted to kill you. seems a bit... weird." Willow said.

"I know. I don't like walking around wandering when they are going to attack next." Buffy said.

"They came for a book." The three friends looked up to see Angel standing a little ways away from the door.

"Man, you could make a little noise when you walk." Jesse said.

"Angel, it's been awhile." Buffy said a bit coldly.

She didn't want Angel to think that she was worried. It may have been childish, but it was his fault that he hadn't called or tried to see her in awhile.

"I've been thinking." Angel said.

"About." Buffy prompted.

"Things. Look just know that they were looking for a book." Angel said. Giles had taken this time to walk out of his office as he was cleaning his glasses.

"Does someone want a book?" Giles asked.

"Yeah it turns out that those guys that attacked the other day were looking for some book." Jesse said. Giles placed his glasses back on his face and nodded.

"What kind of book?" Giles asked noticing that Angel was there.

"I don't know. He didn't say." Angel said.

"He?" Buffy asked.

"Yeah, it's what I was thinking about. Look you have a problem."

"Don't I always have some kind of problem?"

"Yeah, but not like this. I don't' know how long he's been here. I do know why he hasn't made a move yet, but it's only a matter of time." Angel said.

"Care to be a little less cryptic?" Buffy said clearly annoyed.

"William the Bloody. Maybe you've heard of him." Angel said turning to Giles.

"Dear god. Here in Sunnydale." Giles said.

"I'm guessing that's not a good thing." Jesse said.

"It's a dreadful thing. When did you figure this out?" Giles asked.

"I saw him. That night here. He said that the Anointed One had sent him and another minion to grab a book." Angel said.

"And you're barely telling us this now. He could have killed a lot of innocent people by now." Buffy said totally thrown by the fact that Angel hadn't told her about this.

"It's not as simple as you'd like it to be. Anyway, he's here and he's weak." Angel said.

"How do you know that? I mean how do you know he's weak?" Willow asked.

"Because. I don't think he's been the same since his Sire passed away about five years ago. He's dangerous Buffy. Deadly, but he seemed... lets just say he was acting more like a minion than a Master Vampire." Angel said.

"So now would be the imperative time to take him by surprise." Giles said.

"Do you think she's ready?" Angel asked. Doubt clouded Giles' features.

"What aren't you telling me about this guy?" Buffy asked.

"He's killed two Slayers in his time Buffy." Giles said. Everyone went silent. They had faced demons before, but this one hit a little too close to home.

"So I train. I get pumped up and I take him down. I mean now I have the element of surprise." Buffy said.

"Just be careful around him. I think he's... I mean... never mind." Angel said.

"What is it Angel?" Buffy asked.

"It's nothing." Angel said a tad bit more defensively. Buffy jumped in her seat.

Angel had been thinking for the past three days about telling Buffy about Spike. He really didn't want his Grandchilde dead, but who knew what he was up to. Especially with this Xander.

Angel had assumed that Spike was totally distraught over Drusilla and he seemed to be, but he had practically flown away when he thought this... Xander was in trouble. Angel was determined to figure out the puzzle.

"Well I guess this puts more complications on an already complicated situation." Giles said.

"Yeah it does. First these vampires. Then this demon hunter dude. Not to mentions Xander's weird behavior. And now this vampire guy." Jesse said. Angel looked at him when he mentioned the name.

"Xander?" Angel said.

"Yeah I've told you about him. He's a sort of friend." Buffy said. Angel nodded.

Looked like he got a piece a little quicker than he imagined.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

"Mmmm... I'm tired." Xander said as he cuddled against Spike.

It seemed that they hadn't left the bed since the weekend had begun. They hadn't talked either. Not much really. It was mostly about stupid things... when they finally came up for air. Xander was feeling pleasantly boneless at the moment. A feeling he was getting way used to. "Well I don't think you've slept much." Spike commented with a smirk on his face.

"Yeah well who's fault is that?" Xander said playful his eyes already closing.

Spike held him close knowing he'd be asleep soon. The weekend had been magical. He had gotten to know Xander better and already knew that if he wasn't falling before he was falling know. They spent most of their time having sex. Some times it was fast and frenzied other times it was slow and gentle, but it was always amazing.

Spike hadn't left Xander's side since Friday and Xander didn't seem to have much to say against that. They had to stop so Xander could eat, but at this point even food seemed inconsequential. Spike himself was going on his fourth day without blood something that he was beginning to feel acutely.

"I have to leave tomorrow. I mean it's Sunday and I have school tomorrow. Then its back to the hotel." Xander said.

"You'll be okay. I'll make sure of it." Spike said.

"What are you going to do? Buy me for everyday." Spike remained silent.

"Holy shit that's what you're planning on doing." Xander said somewhat shocked.

"Just let it go." Spike said.

"You can't spend that much money. Not on me Spike."

"It's the best thing I can spend my money on. I don't want anyone touching you... period." Spike said.

"You know... I can't have sex with you if you buy me. It would seem to... I don't know unseemly and wrong." Xander said. Spike remained silent.

"It's not all about the sex, Xander. Don't get me wrong that's good... really really good, but that's not why I'm around." Spike said.

"So you'd spend thousands of dollars on me and not demand that I have sex with you." Xander said questioningly.

"If it keeps... if no one touches you than I'd give up my left arm." Spike said. Xander smiled.

"You know you say the sweetest things. I just want you to realize that." Xander said placing a small kiss on Spike's cheek.

"I guess you just bring it out in me, pet." Spike whispered.

"Hmmm, and the sweet talk just keeps on coming. We'll be okay right." Xander asked.

"Of course. I'm not gonna let anything happen to you. You know that." Spike said.

"Yeah, I know."
