QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

Questions from Jinny Li  (2/12/01)

By Jimmy Li

1.)    Deut. 8:19-20

"And it shall be, if thou do at all forget the LORD thy God, and walk after other gods, and serve them, and worship them, I testify against you this day that ye shall surely perish.  As the nations which the LORD destroyeth before your face, so shall ye perish; because ye would not be obedient unto the voice of the LORD your God."

Question 1:Would this still happen even if I repent?

Answer:   If you repent, God will save you. ( Acts 3:19)

Question 2:What if you forgotten God a couple of times?

Answer:   In the Context, God was talking about leaving Him to follow other "gods".  In our day to day life, we should have him as the center of our purpose for living.  Just because you might not be consciously and actively thinking about God at a certain moment doesn't mean you have forgotten (as in ignoring) Him or his teachings.

2.)     Deut. 8:2

"And thou shalt remember all the way which the LORD thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee, and to prove thee, to know what was in thine heart, whether thou wouldest keep his commandments, or no.

Question 3: Why does God test you?

Answer:    Discipline ( Deut 8:5), Developing your perseverance (James 1:3), Placing your hopes on Him ( 2Corinthians 1:9-10), Maturity ( James 1:4) and able to comfort others from the comfort you had received from God. ( 2Corinthians 1:4)

3.)     Matt. 5:48

"Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect."

Question 4: I don't get this.

Answer:   The Bible is very clear in it's teaching that all men are sinners (Romans 3:23) and in need of a savior (Romans 3:24).  We could never be perfect by ourself alone, since we were all sinners to begin with.  In order to be saved from the eternal consequences of sin, we have to have faith (Romans 1:17) in Christ apart (separated) from the law as Romans 3:28 states, "Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law."  This is all by God's grace. (Eph. 2:8-9)  The issue of good works would naturally occur when  true conversion or true salvation have taken place in someone's life due to the fact that man was created by God to do good works. (Eph. 2:10)  Hence, when Jesus talked about   loving your enemies, he said in Matt. 5:48 to be "perfect" just as the Father is perfect.  In Greek, "perfect" also means mature.  When a Christian becomes more mature, he or she would try to follow God's perfection.  But does that mean we would no longer sin in our flesh? Since we're still in our flesh, sometimes we will still sin. However, the most important question is this: Have you accepted Jesus Christ to take away your sins, or you didn't?
