Not long after I first started building Trikes, I wanted to build one using the little Subaru 1.8 motor for more horse power and better reliability with much less tinkering to keep it alive and running good. I just found the VW motor to be a big pain in the ass to keep running right. More than once on long trips, I’ve had to stop on the side of the road, or at the motel before leaving to continue our trip, I’ve had to adjust the points or in one case replace them and make other adjustments to things. I just never felt real comfortable out on the road away from home with the VW motor. Don’t get me wrong. They are good little motors and when properly tuned and serviced, they do a good job of powering a light weight Trike. But if you have one, then you know what I’m talking about.
