Hanyang M1888 Rifle

8x57J (.318)

I bought this rifle from the now defunct Davis Guns in Plain City, OH. It wasn't a Springfield Sporters rifle (this is much cleaner), but was priced right at $40. It was caked in grease and dirt, and took a lot of work to clean up. This rifle was well worn. The buttplate was so worn as to be falling off, the middle barrel band was missing, as was the extractor. A call to Gun Parts Corp got me the missing parts Rather cheaply (less than $15).

I picked up the en-bloc clip at an OGCA show for $2.00. At Barnes Guns in Lancaster, OH I found a very old box of Norma 8x57J ammo with the smaller .318 bullet.

I replaced all the parts I had ordered and attempted to clean the wood. Cleaning revealed very different wood being used in the handguard.

I've shot this, and considering how worn the muzzle crown is, I am surprised it still can keep the bullet inside a paper plate at 50 paces.

Can anyone translate the butt markings?

How about the receiver markings? I know the star in the middle indicates the Hanyang Arsenal.

The characters (with the muzzle pointing up) translate to:

Ming (people)

Nan (south)       He (river)

Bin (Soldier)

He-Nan is a province South of Yellow River. Ming-Bin is militia.

(thanks to Karl Tsai!)
