Review of Aberdeen City Youth String Ensemble, Queens Cross Church, 21st April 2002 by Alan Cooper "There was no time off for the young musicians of Aberdeen City Youth String Ensemble and their conductor Malcolm Bolton this holiday weekend. Their concert in Queen's Cross Church last night was given in support of U.N.I.C.E.F.""It was the first time I had heard this group and they took my breath away. Their playing in the finale of Handel's Concerto Grosso Op.6 No.10 or in The Arrival of the Queen of Sheba was not far off the quality you expect from the B.T. Scottish Ensemble - the same precision and clarity - the same fiery enthusiasm." "In the two Handel pieces the strings were supported by two young oboe players Fraser Kelman and Sarah Ross whose sound added to the bright cutting edge of the music. Fraser Kelman was also the soloist in a thrilling performance of Marcello's Concerto for oboe in D minor. His playing was matched by cellist Rachel Lind in Vivaldi's Concerto in D minor especially in her virtuoso playing of the intricate variations of the finale. Arvo Part's atmospheric Summa and the intimate ambience of the opening movement of Mozart's Eine Kleine Nachtmusik played by a smaller core ensemble completed a remarkable top class performance." - Press and Journal, 22nd April 2002
