ON ARRIVAL

Before starting on your project all volunteers receive literature about our country and detailed information concerning their particular project. We also advise a safety measures, travel arrangements, Spanish classes, living costs, type of accommodation, health matters and places of interest / things to do in El Salvador and our neighboring countries.

On your arrival in El Salvador you will be met at San Salvador; International Airport or, if you are travelling overland, at bus terminals in San Salvador or Santa Ana.

We have English speaking staff who will help you with every aspect of your stay in our country.

ACCOMMODATION

All our projects are in and around El Salvador´s second city, Santa Ana, located about 65 Km west of San Salvador and half an hour by bus from the Guatemala border.

After your initial arrival we will give you an orientation tour of the facilities in the area around your accommodation and places of interest. We will introduce you to your host family.

We believe that you will gain most from your time in El Salvador by living with local people in clean, comfortable and secure accommodation, close to where other volunteers are staying.

It is probable that you will share a room with another volunteer; you will share bathroom, kitchen and dining facilities with your host family.

Bed linen, cutlery and other basic necessities are provided. In the event that you forget to bring an essential item, local supermarkets are well stocked and usually a lot cheaper than at home.

Cooking facilities enable you to decide for yourself what you want to eat at midday, the preparation of salads or sandwiches for example (at your expense).

LEARN ESSENTIAL SPANISH

This is an optional course which cost US $250 for the complete 5 day intensive course in basic Spanish. It is delivered by a qualified bilingual teacher for four hours per day.

A grasp of Spanish will help you get the most from your project and integrate with your host family.

There is also a 2 day course for those already competent in Spanish which again is optional and costs $150. This course highlights differences between European and Central American Spanish.

The costs of both courses include all necessary printed materials. Your accommodation will usually be between 5 and 20 minutes from your project location, either within walking distance or a short bus ride away.

COSTS

As stated previously L.E.S. is not a charitable organisation but we do believe in giving volunteers a fair deal.

The costs to you are as follows:

  • All travel expenses including taxis for getting to and from your local airport to San Salvador.
  • All travel expenses whilst in El Salvador.
  • US $14.00 per day living expenses, payable in full upon your arrival. This includes your accommodation, breakfast and evening meal and laundry charges.

The cost of setting up and monitoring each project is borne by L.E.S since we bear in mind the value of your commitment to us. If you decide however, that you would like to make a voluntary contribution of US $1 to US $2 per day towards the running costs of your project, this would be most gratefully received.

WHEN TO COME

L.E.S. operates projects throughout the year. The rainy season is from May to October when you can expect high humidity and temperatures of 28ºC – 30ºC. The atmosphere is cooled pleasantly by frequent thunderstorms in late afternoon / early evening.

The dry season lasts from November to April when temperatures may reach  39-41 ºC but the air is less humid.
