*Hank Aaron

First played professional baseball in 1952 for the Indianopolis clowns of the Negro American League. His contract was bought by the Boston Braves that year and he spent the next two years in the minor leagues. In 1954, he was called up by the Milwaukee Braves. In 1956 he won the league batting championship with an average of .328 and in 1957 was named the league's Most Valuable Player and the Braves won the world series. Before the Braves moved to Atlanta, at the end of 1965, Aaron had hit 398 home runs. In Atlanta on April 8, 1974, he hit his 715th, breaking Babe Ruth's record, which had stood since 1935. After the 1974 season, he was traded to the Milwaukee Brewers of the American League. After the 1976 season, Aaron retired as a player and rejoined the Atlanta Braves as an executive vice president. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame on Jan. 13, 1982. Aaron's batting records include totals of 755 home runs, 1,477 extra-base hits, and 2,297 runs batted in. His other career statistics include 2,174 runs scored and 12,364 times at bat in 3,298 games. His hits (3,771) were exceeded only by those of Ty Cobb and Pete Rose. His lifetime batting average was .305.

Chuck Abbott

Shortstop drafted by the Angels in 1996.

'99 Bowman Rookie #191

Jim Abbott

Born without a right hand, southpaw Jim Abbott went directly from the University of Michigan to the Angels' starting rotation in the spring of 1989 without spending a day in the minor leagues. Many considered the move a publicity stunt by manager Doug Rader, but after struggling early, Abbott proved his doubters wrong by winning 12 games with a 3.92 ERA in his rookie season. Abbott's career had its ups and downs. In 1991 he looked like one of the best young left-handers in the game after winning 18 games for the Angels while posting a 2.89 ERA. He was traded to the Yankees in December 1992 and in the heat of the pennant race tossed a 4-0 no-hitter against Cleveland. Given that he could only swing with one arm, his most impressive accomplishments may have been his two hits in 23 career at-bats.

Hit 336 career home runs and batted .277 over 17 seasons with the Reds, Braves, Indians and Angels. He also managed Cleveland to an eighth-place finish in 1967. Doyle Alexander

Doyle Alexander moved around enough to become the fourth pitcher to record wins over all 26 teams. He became increasingly effective late in his career, by developing an assortment of pitches, speeds, and deliveries, and relying more on guile and control than overpowering stuff. In 1985 he won 17 games for the second season in a row, including the game that clinched the AL East pennant on the last day of the season.Traded to Detroit for John Smoltz midway through the 1987 season, in what looked to be a bad trade for the Braves, Alexander had a 1.53 ERA and a 9-0 record in an exciting pennant race for the Tigers, including two dramatic victories over the Blue Jays in the final days of the season. Often a slow starter, he had a surprisingly good first half in 1988, earning his first All-Star selection. Alexander retired after a 6-18 campaign in 1989 with 194 victories.
