BIOGRAPHY
Feeling confident they launched a nation-wide search via a string of auditions held up and down the country-amid a frenzy of media attention. "We decided to put an ad in the 'Stage' newspaper, as we had done when we were auditioning for the Spice Girls," explains Bob, 55, who also worked with 80's pop sensation Bros. "Up until then, no-one knew that we had put the Spice Girls together and it suddenly hit the press-the media went crazy for the auditions. the headlines read 'Spice Boys Wanted', 'Boy Power!' and we were being talked about on every TV and radio station. Thousands of lads turned up-it was madness." Unbeknown to the crowds who stormed the auditions, Bob and Chris had already secured record company interest for the lucky applicants with RCA Records-the label that gave us Take That. Chris had begun work on the foundations of the group with RCA's A&R (Artist & Repertoire) man, Simon Cowell months earlier and, with Simon in place, Bob and Chris set about seeking out the stars of tomorrow. "We knew what we were looking for," remembers Bob, "But there was no guarentee that we were going to find it. It was more a case of the right guys finding us. And we got lucky. Very lucky." From the start, Bob and Chris only planned to have 4 members in the band because they were eager to steer clear of the conventional 5-piece pop phenomenon. But they liked all five lads and, by the end of the second audition, were at a loss as to who they should lose from the line-up. "It was impossible trying to decide who to let go. When we saw them perform as a five-piece and they sounded and looked right we knew there was no way we could afford to lose any of them," says Bob. "They were a group before we even told them they were a group, it was obvious they would work well together. "And that's how 5ive were born. The rest, as they say, will be history." *Taken from FIVE-the official book
