Behind the Feathers:

the Real Crystal Shekeira

Obligatory stats:

Any of my friends can tell you that I'm steeped high in the realm of magic and fantasy -- I devote my free hours to writing and reading about, as well as drawing, mythical creatures. There's nothing wrong with believing in the fantasy realm, as long as you know where it ends and reality begins. One of my favorite quotes explains that:

We live in our fantasy and only endure our reality. ~ R.A. Wilson

As you can probably tell, I'm an aspriring author. I work hard at what I do, as I find it to be the best outlet for what goes on in my head. I have a very active imagination and am usually quiet, as I tend to think a lot. Writing to publication is a goal many strive and few achieve; it's a hard road to glory, but glory isn't what I'm after (well, not the foremost goal ^^). I want other people to experience the world that I've created over the years (almost a decade). What you see here is only the tip of the iceberg.

My greatest wish is to be published and to later have those novels go on to become movies. A bit high in the sky, eh? Well, it's a dream and dreams don't have limits; people have limits and that's something they impose upon themselves and others. I like to name my author inspirations as Mercedes Lackey and Anne McCaffrey. Both of these women have talent beyond extraordinary and their flair is only something I imagine to achieve. However, really nothing would be what it is today if I hadn't picked up a copy of a book called Phoenix Fire over six years ago at the local library. I'd been interested in fantasy long before this (I can recall drawing flying unicorns with box-like heads when I was 8 or so, and writing stories as early as that), but that book opened my eyes to a whole other creature: the Phoenix.

Since that day, I've lived the immortal bird. You can tell how deeply I've been affected by the picture opposite my real life one. I've created a species, a language, a culture that revolves around Phoenixes (yes, plural and not singular). I've had an affinity for fire and what it holds for a long time; by no means am I a pyromaniac. I hold fire to be an element untouchable and to be respected. I'll just sit and stare at the images within for hours if possible.

Direct inspiration stems from not only other writers, but my friends and family as well. Friends who have stood by me, provided me with story lines and characters; my family that has always asked me "When are you going to send that book of yours off?".
