Some people call me the space cowboy.
Some people call me the gangsta of love.
Some people call me Maurice (wha whaaa!)

Who is Fyn?

The deep, burning question is answered!

Who is Fyn indeed? My name is Frances Wong. I’m a senior at Washington University in St. Louis, and I will be for some time. I am double-majoring in Biology and English literature, or what I’d like to call, BIOLIT.
A few select Oak Parkians are familiar with my sharp wit, found most prominently in my writing. A few more people know me as a “quiet observer.” Still more consider me just plain, “quiet,” even more, “mute,” and I’d say the majority of the population mistakes my quietness for snobbiness. (See Onion article--Seemingly Shy Woman Really Just Stuck-Up, Friends Say).
Darn. I was going more for the “aloof shyness” type.
Bottom line (or take-home message, if you will. The science professors here at Wash U are very fond of "take-home messages." If it could've been wrapped up in one take-home message, why did they spend an entire hour lecturing us?): Often, my quietness is mistaken for either snobbiness or deepness. I assure you, it's neither. It's just....who I am.

My Interests (and brief explanations about them):

Writing: Way back before the wonderful English Department at Wash U convinced me that my writing was not anything special, I really thought I was somethin'. Needless to say, my writing ego has been dragged through the mud a bit, which is sad because writing was the one thing I was actually able to be cocky about. In any case, I'm not going to become a best-selling author any time soon, considering the pre-med path I am taking.
But I still love to write. It's a passion in me that no one can take away. I stick mostly to journal writing, which is almost like breathing to me; I've kept diaries and journals all my life.
See My Original Poetry More writing samples will be posted on my site momentarily. And contrary to unpopular belief, "momentarily" can mean "in a short while," as well as "fleetingly."

Computer Games: Oh yeah. This is where the art of time suckage comes to its apex. I'm not really into the shoot-em-up, Doom-like games on the market, but I tend to go for the wussier, role-playing type games. Fortunately, I can afford to do this because I am, after all, a girl.
Games I sincerely recommend you play: I'm a big fan of Myst, Riven, and yes, even Exile. The Monkey Island series by LucasArts is great, as well as Grim Fandango. WarCraft/StarCraft games--always a pleasure. Currently, I'm a bit too wrapped up in The Sims. My addiction to that game is actually quite sickening.
See Sims. See Sims run. Go Sims go.

Reading: To say that "reading" is one of your hobbies is a little less adventurous than listing "hang-gliding," "para-sailing," or heck, even "stamp collecting." Fortunately, my literature major enables me to both enjoy myself and get credit for it. I say this smugly until the time comes to write a paper. Then, I usually curse myself out for being a damn double major.
What do I read? Nearly anything. I have this funny phenomenon where the current book I am reading tends to be "my favorite book." So I'll list some of my favorites here:
Favorite story-teller: John Irving.
Favorite writer: Philip Roth.
Favorite Humor Writer (it's a genre of its own): Michael Nelson.
Favorite book (relative term): Dave Eggers' A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius.
I am in the middle of both Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials series, and the Lord of the Rings. And I'm an advocate of the One Book, One Chicago program.

Neil Gaiman's Sandman: I met him once. Neil Gaiman. It was amazing. He was promoting his book Stardust and he did a little reading and a little signing. All through it, I kept on looking at his head, musing, "That's where the Sandman universe was created!" Ahhh, good times.

Music Interests: Dexy's Midnight Runners all the way! Just kidding. I know people always say this about themselves, but I truly do have eclectic music tastes. I can listen to almost anything. The one thing I truly can't stand is if a not-too-spectacular song is played over and over again on the radio. Then I start hating it. You leave me no choice, people!
Specific examples? Let's see...my absolute favorite artist is Tori Amos. It's a Sandman thing; a packaged deal if you will. I also like Barenaked Ladies. The band.
My interest in Eminem is a little different than others in the fact that I think the man is a true poet, and that is how I listen to his music. In a day and age when poetry has fizzled (I took a Modern American Women's poetry class this last semester, so I know for sure it has fizzled), I think Eminem has found a creative outlet that works. Now I hope you don't hate me because of this.

My Humor:
I bent my Wookie! --Ralph Wiggum
I take pride in my brand of humor. It's kind of guy-like. I dunno, you be the judge: The Simpsons (favorite character: Homer, favorite minor character: Groundskeeper Willie), Monty Python (Not many girls into MP out there. I find guys find it...weird.), Late Night with Conan O'Brien, The Daily Show, Kids in the Hall, South Park, Mystery Science Theatre 3000--oh yeah, I've got a guy's humor all right. I draw the line at the Man Show though. That just disgusts me.
And the Onion! Oh, the Onion! My dream would be to write for them, but I heard they don't take applications.

Other Interests (self-explanatory): Sleeping for very long periods of time. Driving ranges. Sharpies.

I Dislike: People who think I'm mad at them when I'm not (It's a form of egoism, I believe. Don't people realize that it would take me more energy to hate them than to feel absolutely indifferent about them?). IMacs kind of freak me out. Homophobia.

Utterly Impartial To: Existentialism (that's a little joke...)
