THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND

The Allman Brothers Band track "Whipping Post" first appeared on their 1969 self-titled debut album (pictured). It went on to become a rock classic, with the live version of the song (from the At Fillmore East album) finding its way onto a couple of prestigious song lists: Rolling Stone magazine's "500 Greatest Songs Of All Time" and The Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame's "500 Songs That Shaped Rock & Roll".

The Intro is apparently in 11/4 time. Who knew? I certainly didn't. Even Gregg Allman, the song's composer, didn't know. When I tabbed the parts I've posted here, I viewed each staff as three bars of 3/4 time with a bar of 2/4 time at the end. It seems Allman viewed it much the same way, as he relates here:

"I didn't know the Intro was in 11/4 time. I just saw it as three sets of three, and then two to jump on the next three sets with: it was like 1,2,3--1,2,3--1,2,3--1,2. I didn't count it as 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11. It was one beat short, but it didn't feel one short, because to get back to the triad, you had two steps to go up. You'd really hit those two hard, to accent them, so that would separate the threes. ...[Duane] said, 'That's good, man, I didn't know that you understood 11/4.' Of course I said something intelligent like, 'What's 11/4?' Duane just said, 'Okay, dumbass, I'll try to draw it up on paper for you.' " (source: Wikipedia) 

So after reading that (and discovering that I'm in the dumbass club with Gregg Tongue out), I could have changed the tab to make it 11/4 by removing the bar lines, making each staff one bar of music instead of four bars. But I decided not to because I think it's actually easier to follow the way I originally tabbed it...and if even the composer was thinking of it that way, it can't be too wrong.  Tabbed here is the Intro and a dual guitar part after the first Chorus. The tab is of the studio version.

ON HOLD
Topic: Website

Sorry to report that the website is officially on hold as of now. My computer has become impossible to work with, and it looks like I'll be offline for awhile. I'm not sure when I'll be able to have things back up and running. The site will still be here, but there won't be any new additions for awhile. In the meantime, I'll keep working on tabs to have some ready for when I can post them again. (Next up is a request for Max Webster's "The Party".) Hope people can enjoy some of the other tabs already available on the site until such time as I have a computer that works and can get some new material posted. Thanks for your patience, and most of all thanks for visiting the site. Smile

HEADPINS - "JUST ONE MORE TIME"

Just over a year ago I did the Intro of this song for the Riffs section of the site; now comes the full tab. "Just One More Time" was the second single, after "Celebration", from the Headpins' second album, Line Of Fire (1983). The album followed in the footsteps of its predecessor Turn It Loud (1982) in giving the band its second consecutive platinum album in Canada.

I ran into some problems in part of the guitar solo. I have no means of slowing recordings down, so the really quick note runs become a bit of a blur. Ultimately, there were four bars that I had to leave out. (And I suspect this same problem will crop up in the next tab.) But most of it I was able to hear clearly enough. Just as a side note, in the video version of the song, the guitar solo is edited down to just the first sixteen bars, instead of having the full 32.

Also, the lack of images (i.e. album covers) on the blog right now is due to how badly my computer is working. I can't save or upload images in proper format. FIREFALL - "STRANGE WAY"

Formed in Boulder, Colorado in 1974, Firefall's most successful years came in the mid to late 1970's. Their flute-tinged pop rock sound gave them a Top 10 hit with their first single, "You Are the Woman". "Just Remember I Love You", from the band's follow-up album, was equally successful. During this time, they enjoyed exposure to large audiences, touring as the support band on Fleetwood Mac's Rumours tour. 1978 saw the release of Firefall's third album, Elan. This album once again exceeded the success of the previous one, giving the band its first platinum album. The single "Strange Way" reached #11 on the Billboard chart.

One more album was recorded with the original line-up, before the band started to undergo a series of personnel changes. They continued on, but never again matched the commercial success of their first few albums.

THE NORTHERN PIKES - "THINGS I DO FOR MONEY"

I guess you're just asking for it when you think a tab is going to be quick and easy. Tongue out This one took a lot longer than expected. Okay, there were some distractions along the way, but the tab itself still took awhile. Originally, I was doing this one as a chord chart, then along the way I decided to turn it into a full tab. I thought it might be plenty of work for a song that maybe not a lot of people are too familiar with, but I've always really liked it.

The Northern Pikes were formed in Saskatoon in 1984. They released two albums independently before landing a deal with Virgin Records in 1986. Their major label debut album was Big Blue Sky (1987). It produced two singles, which charted in Canada in the summer and fall of 1987. The first single, "Teenland", reached #29 with the follow-up, "Things I Do For Money", getting to #85. The album achieved Gold status in Canada. Throughout their career, the Pikes charted mostly at home in Canada, but in 1990 they enjoyed international success with the single "She Ain't Pretty". That song made it onto the US Billboard chart, reaching #86, while going Top 10 (#6) in Canada.

SAGA

Formed in Oakville, Ontario in the mid-1970's, Saga was built around the core of the final line-up of the band Fludd. Throughout much of the band's long career, they've enjoyed greater success in Europe than they have in North America. This was true right from their early years; their synth/guitar/electric drums-driven progressive rock style was embraced overseas, while going largely unnoticed in the US. They enjoyed modest success at home in Canada with the singles "It's Time", "See Them Smile", and "Don't Be Late".

Things changed in 1981 when Saga's fourth album Worlds Apart (pictured) resulted in breakthrough success in North America. Ironically, this success came from their first album recorded outside of North America; the sessions took place in England, with producer Rupert Hine. The first single, "Wind Him Up", took Saga into the Top 40 in Canada for the first time, reaching #22. "On the Loose", the follow-up single, was also well-received. In the US, the two singles were released in reverse order, with "Wind Him Up" climbing to #64 on the Billboard chart (and "On the Loose" reaching greater heights).

While this was the band's most commercial album to that point, it was largely driven by the same elements as their first three equally superb albums, that being Michael Sadler's acrobatic vocals, and the harmonizing and duelling trade-off lines of Ian Crichton's guitar and Jim Gilmour's keyboards.

Worlds Apart achieved Gold status in the US, and the success of the album in Canada won Saga the 1982 Juno Award for Most Promising Group. The promise was realized as Saga has gone on to be one of Canada's best and longest-lasting musical acts.
