ON HOLD
Topic: Website

Sorry to report that the website is officially on hold as of now. My computer has become impossible to work with, and it looks like I'll be offline for awhile. I'm not sure when I'll be able to have things back up and running. The site will still be here, but there won't be any new additions for awhile. In the meantime, I'll keep working on tabs to have some ready for when I can post them again. (Next up is a request for Max Webster's "The Party".) Hope people can enjoy some of the other tabs already available on the site until such time as I have a computer that works and can get some new material posted. Thanks for your patience, and most of all thanks for visiting the site.

HEADPINS - "JUST ONE MORE TIME"

Just over a year ago I did the Intro of this song for the Riffs section of the site; now comes the full tab. "Just One More Time" was the second single, after "Celebration", from the Headpins' second album, Line Of Fire (1983). The album followed in the footsteps of its predecessor Turn It Loud (1982) in giving the band its second consecutive platinum album in Canada.

I ran into some problems in part of the guitar solo. I have no means of slowing recordings down, so the really quick note runs become a bit of a blur. Ultimately, there were four bars that I had to leave out. (And I suspect this same problem will crop up in the next tab.) But most of it I was able to hear clearly enough. Just as a side note, in the video version of the song, the guitar solo is edited down to just the first sixteen bars, instead of having the full 32.

Also, the lack of images (i.e. album covers) on the blog right now is due to how badly my computer is working. I can't save or upload images in proper format. Hopefully, a little computer servicing will be done soon, but at the moment I have to just be glad I can get the tabs uploaded at all!

FIREFALL - "STRANGE WAY"

Formed in Boulder, Colorado in 1974, Firefall's most successful years came in the mid to late 1970's. Their flute-tinged pop rock sound gave them a Top 10 hit with their first single, "You Are the Woman". "Just Remember I Love You", from the band's follow-up album, was equally successful. During this time, they enjoyed exposure to large audiences, touring as the support band on Fleetwood Mac's Rumours tour. 1978 saw the release of Firefall's third album, Elan. This album once again exceeded the success of the previous one, giving the band its first platinum album. The single "Strange Way" reached #11 on the Billboard chart.

One more album was recorded with the original line-up, before the band started to undergo a series of personnel changes. They continued on, but never again matched the commercial success of their first few albums.

THE NORTHERN PIKES - "THINGS I DO FOR MONEY"

I guess you're just asking for it when you think a tab is going to be quick and easy. This one took a lot longer than expected. Okay, there were some distractions along the way, but the tab itself still took awhile. Originally, I was doing this one as a chord chart, then along the way I decided to turn it into a full tab. I thought it might be plenty of work for a song that maybe not a lot of people are too familiar with, but I've always really liked it.

The Northern Pikes were formed in Saskatoon in 1984. They released two albums independently before landing a deal with Virgin Records in 1986. Their major label debut album was Big Blue Sky (1987). It produced two singles, which charted in Canada in the summer and fall of 1987. The first single, "Teenland", reached #29 with the follow-up, "Things I Do For Money", getting to #85. The album achieved Gold status in Canada. Throughout their career, the Pikes charted mostly at home in Canada, but in 1990 they enjoyed international success with the single "She Ain't Pretty". That song made it onto the US Billboard chart, reaching #86, while going Top 10 (#6) in Canada.

SAGA
Topic: Riff-In-A-Jiff

Formed in Oakville, Ontario in the mid-1970's, Saga was built around the core of the final line-up of the band Fludd. Throughout much of the band's long career, they've enjoyed greater success in Europe than they have in North America. This was true right from their early years; their synth/guitar/electric drums-driven progressive rock style was embraced overseas, while going largely unnoticed in the US. They enjoyed modest success at home in Canada with the singles "It's Time", "See Them Smile", and "Don't Be Late".

Things changed in 1981 when Saga's fourth album Worlds Apart (pictured) resulted in breakthrough success in North America. Ironically, this success came from their first album recorded outside of North America; the sessions took place in England, with producer Rupert Hine. The first single, "Wind Him Up", took Saga into the Top 40 in Canada for the first time, reaching #22. "On the Loose", the follow-up single, was also well-received. In the US, the two singles were released in reverse order, with "Wind Him Up" climbing to #64 on the Billboard chart (and "On the Loose" reaching greater heights).

While this was the band's most commercial album to that point, it was largely driven by the same elements as their first three equally superb albums, that being Michael Sadler's acrobatic vocals, and the harmonizing and duelling trade-off lines of Ian Crichton's guitar and Jim Gilmour's keyboards.

Worlds Apart achieved Gold status in the US, and the success of the album in Canada won Saga the 1982 Juno Award for Most Promising Group. The promise was realized as Saga has gone on to be one of Canada's best and longest-lasting musical acts.

STREETHEART - "HOLLYWOOD"

It looks like things are getting back to normal here. I was able to re-post the GS tab page, images will upload again, and I'm getting daily stats again. The only thing that still isn't working is that I'm not getting e-mail notices about blog comments. So I just discovered one was left about four days ago that I didn't know about. I'll answer that soon.

"Hollywood" has always been my favourite of Streetheart's singles. It's from the band's second album Under Heaven Over Hell (1979). It was their first album to feature guitarist John Hannah, orignal guitarist Paul Dean having departed after the band's debut album. He would go on to form Loverboy. Hannah, for his part, had played guitar for Harlequin, and he would later return to that band.

UHOH was recorded in Quebec, with a production team that included Nazareth guitarist Manny Charlton. The album also included the hit "Here Comes the Night", originally made famous by Van Morrison band Them. The album went platinum in Canada, with sales of over 100,000 units.

During their recording career, the Regina band produced six Gold albums, four of which went on to achieve Platinum status. In 2003, they were inducted into the Western Canadian Music Hall Of Fame.

I think there are probably multiple ways to play the main riff in this song. I don't know if the way I've tabbed it is the definitive way, but I opted for a fingering that falls fairly naturally on the fretboard.

IT'S ALWAYS SOMETHING...

Ever have one of those days when part of your website just up and disappears on you? Well, it happened to me last night. And I still can't get it fixed. Last night, I finished up the stats for April and posted them here on the blog. Then I was going to do a very simple task that I hadn't gotten around to doing yet, just add a link to a page. About a week ago I uploaded some photos and created a Girlschool photo page to link to the Girlschool tab page.

I hadn't added the link from the tab page yet, so I did that. And when I clicked to save the page...everything disappeared. The whole Girlschool tab page. Just gone. I had thought I was going to spend last night working on getting a tab into the computer, but instead I had to work on retrieving that page. At first I thought maybe I clicked on something by mistake and deleted the page. But that doesn't seem to be the case.

I had the coding saved to a flash drive, so I didn't have to totally re-do the page. It was outdated, though, the page has been added to and re-arranged since I saved that coding. So it took about half an hour to get the page back up to date. I clicked to save it again. Once again, it wouldn't save. Finally, I typed in a short message just noting that the page was down, and the problem was being worked on. Of course, that wouldn't save, either.

Now at this point I don't want to work on any page, because I'm worried that when I click on the save button the whole page is going to disappear. The other pages are there and functioning, and I want to keep it that way. The next tab to be posted is going to be on the Canadian page, and as the most-viewed page on the site, I don't want to risk losing it, too. So I won't be posting that tab (or anything else) until I figure out what's going on. I'm going to save updated coding for all my pages just to make sure I have them backed up. Then I'll try to see if I can get the GS page up and running again.

Added later: I think this is showing evidence of being an Angelfire problem rather than my own computer, because I also tried uploading an image and it wouldn't work, and I went to check my site stats for yesterday, and they weren't there yet. I'll just have to wait until the problem is resolved. In the meantime, Girlschool tabs are still accessible by typing the URL below, with the song title you want, into your browser. This is the URL, using the tab of "Not For Sale" as an example:
