(7)Some of the major issues facing illegal immigrants are how to survive once they cross the boarder. Getting across seems to be the easiest step “All you need is a pair of wire cutters and you can come through at will” says Jack Ladd, a reporter for CBS News. The proposal of this new fence is suppose to stop the easy access for illegal immigrants. In 2004 the U.S boarder patrol apprehended 235,000 people were trying to illegally cross the boarder. It is estimated for every one person being caught, four illegal immigrants make it across the boarder. This means thousands of illegal immigrants are entering our country everyday.

Is it fair to turn down Mexicans who are trying to pursue the American dream and make something of themselves? The United States in a free country. Stopping the Mexicans from coming into our country is the least of our worries. Do we really want to go out and arrest a kitchen worker, when there is potentially someone out there with a HAZMAT driver’s license who has access to our nuclear power plants?

So what happens when illegal immigrants are caught? Due to the limited amount of space in detention centers many are set free, in our country. They are told they have six months to go to court and get a letter from the boarder patrol agent. It is reported that 90 percent never follow through with their direction. On an episode of 60 minutes they caught two Guatemalans leaving the detention center with their letters, and then they proceeded to disappear. Where are they going? According to studies, they are going to look for work.

How does an illegal immigrant (8) go about getting a job? They first need to obtain illegal documents so that they can get hired. 60 minutes went to a meatpacking plant and posed as two illegal immigrants. They tried to get a job and the owner told them that they would need to pay $1,300 for a social security card and birth certificate and to return in 48 hours with the money. The owner followed through with his word and presented the documents and told him his new name was Ricardo Torres Camacho. Once they had the documents, they tried to see if they were real and provided the proper information. Sure enough they found the real Camacho a Puerto Rican who verified that the documents were the originals and they provided the proper names of his parents and other information. So now, all the new Camacho has to do is memorize the social security number, the date of birth, and the names of the parents, for the interviewing process. Employers claim that if the documents appear real that they can not speculate that just because they are Hispanic they are illegal. This would be racism. Employers also have no way of knowing if there is another Camacho working down the street with the same illegal documents. This makes it more difficult to identify them. Once they have a job they become a part of our society, and have to pay taxes and social security just like the rest of us.

The process of obtaining these documents can be very risky and costly but there is a high enough demand for immigrants to continue to pour through this loophole and live amongst us as illegal immigrants. The number of illegal immigrants will continue to add growth to our economy. There are many different aspects of looking at how the illegal immigrants help and hinder our society as you can further read about on our website.8
