Mexican American immigrants both help and hinder or society in a number of ways. They change our economy in a number of ways and without them in this country, America would be significantly different. There are rising arguments everywhere asking if immigrants really do help or society or if them being here just makes it more difficult for America to run how it is supposed too. Researchers everywhere are looking for an answer, though one answer will never be correct. Our country has very different outlooks on government, and political issues which make it difficult for us to say if they really help America.

There are a lot of arguments that are beginning to surface. For example, there is talk about how immigrants benefit the society because they take the lower class jobs that do not pay a lot of money. These are the jobs that Americans are unwilling to take for social class and money purposes, or simply for the fact that they are too skilled for those jobs. To an immigrant, taking a job that pays five dollars an hour is better then going back to a country where there are unfair laws and an unjust society. This brings about another common argument about the American dream. Who are American’s to deny someone to live to their greatest potential. Immigrants come over here to make a better life for themselves and their families much like our ancestors did, and immigrants need a fair chance to live a better life. Not only do immigrants come over here and take jobs that no one wants, but they are also paying taxes. A portion of this money goes to social security and Medicare to help the rest of Americans. Illegal immigrants pay about $4,000 a year per household each year.

On the other hand, there are lots of ways that having illegal immigrants gives our society a disadvantage. For example, illegal immigrants can be a huge danger for America. For one, they have already broken the law by coming over here illegally in the first place, and once they are here most continue to break the law to make a living. This includes, stealing, selling drugs, joining gangs, etc. By breaking more laws, this causes the government and Americans to have to pay more for the prisons. Arizona alone spends eighty billion dollars each year putting these immigrants in jail.4 True, this is mostly because this is where most of them reside, but that’s a lot of money for one state to have to shell out for people that should not be here in the first place. Also, because of their low paying jobs and unstable life style, illegal immigrants cost America a lot of money in social services. A lot of illegal immigrants use food stamps and they have no health care. This forces the individual states to have to pay for their health care. Once again the states closest to the border have to spend the most money. These include; California, Arizona, Texas, Florida, and Georgia. Not only do illegal immigrants cost us extra money, but they bring diseases from their country into ours. Diseases that have not been around in America for a long time are being brought back because illegal immigrants have not been vaccinated for them. Also, considering all that has been going on with terrorism, one can only imagine how many illegal immigrants there are in America that are our enemies. Children of illegal immigrants cost states a lot of money each year because of the fact that there are so many cultural gaps that they need to fill. School systems need to then spend money on getting them the extra help they need and tutors who speak their language. Immigrants also hinder our society for the fact that they raise our poverty levels. Most illegal immigrants make around $20,000 to $22,000 dollars a year.

Considering the previous facts, illegal immigrants defiantly impact our society greatly. Without then in America there would surely be a difference within our economy. Our country’s money, as well as each individual states money situation would be different. Also, there would be a lot more Americans taking jobs that they disliked. This argument will never die because there are so many different points that are being considered. Illegal immigrants impact our society greatly and their effects can not be decided with just facts. Only time will tell what is going to happen with illegal immigrants in America.5
