The original name of Alpha delta Pi was the "Adelphean Society." The word " Adelphean" is derived from the Greek word meaning sister. It was founded on May 15, 1851 at Wesleyan Female College in Macon, Georgia. We hold the distinction of being the first secret society in the world for college women. The Adelphean Society flourished through the years and in 1904 the members voted to become national and in 1905 changed their name to Alpha Delta Phi. In 1913 it was changed to Alpha Delta Pi because of continued confusion with a men's' fraternity of the same name.

The young women who founded Alpha Delta Pi were very special. They had the privilege of attending the first chartered college for women in the world. The young women who were fortunate to attend college did so at a very young age. It was not unusual for Wesleyan freshmen to be 14 or 15 years old. When you consider the young age of our 6 founders, it makes the vision they had of forming a secret society for women even more remarkable.
