The next week, Kevin, his fianceé Kristen, Brian, Leighanne, Howie, A.J., and Nick all met for dinner. The seven of them went out to dinner at a casual Italian restaurant that Howie loved. As they waited for their food, they began to discuss many different things. The conversation drifted to the topic of Kevin's and Brian's engagements and how everyone was handling it.
"So, Brian, Kevin, how you guys holding up now that everyone knows?" A.J. asked curiously.
"It's going okay," Brian replied somewhat nervously.
"Liar," Leighanne said and laughed.
"Okay, fine! It's NOT going okay."
"You guys should have seen him when John Norris announced it! He was a wreck!"
"Leighanne, small setback or total fiasco of telling the press?" Howie asked.
"Seems like a fiasco, but once everything settles, it won't be a big deal."
"Kevin didn't answer!" Nick said.
"Umm, well, things didn't quite work out," he answered.
"What do you mean, Kevin?" Brian asked apprehensively.
"I broke it off," Kristin answered.
"What? Why?" they all asked.
"Before you know it, we'll be back on tour or whatever, and Kristin has to go back as a dancer in a month and a half for another leg of Cher's tour, so we thought we would wait," Kevin said.
"But 'til when?" Howie asked.
"We've been through a lot in seven years, but we're still together. Maybe seven more years from now, we'll actually be settled, and not covering every corner of the world so many times a year," Kevin answered.
"It's just what we decided," Kristin agreed.
"Wow, once Kev told me, I thought you would be married first!" Brian said, almost talking to himself.
As the conversation continued, Leighanne and Brian sat in stunned silence, occasionally stealing glances at each other. Brian could not believe that he now had all of the weight from their fans thrown on his shoulders. Leighanne was nervous about how the fans would take Kevin's new announcement about breaking it off and how the group would be affected by her influence in Brian's life.
