After years of hunting Ash's Pikachu with his companions, Jessie and Meowth, the Boss of Team Rocket shifted his attentions to morphing Pokemon. After careful contemplation, he decided that these failures - who couldn't even steal one eletric rat, would be better off serving him from somewhere a little more pleasant, by becoming guards. James was sentenced to night duty in the corridors amongst the screaming, pleading and begging Pokemorphs and Jessie was giving day duty in the same.

And poor Meowth was "volunteered" for metamorphosis.

Eventually, the plees, the anxiety and the sheer futility of it all, got too much for James, and one night he broke out, releasing all the Pokemorphs he could.

After that, the young man went into hiding, because not only was Giovanni after him, but also were his many legions. And here he stumbled upon Kataryna, owner of CAIP, the "centre for Abandoned and Injured Pokemon," and someone he had met years before. Together they helped form the "Freedom Trail" which offers sanctuary to Pokemorphs, and later Pookamon, that have escaped Team Rocket's clutches and now seek the paradise of the Island Haven, a place they can be safe.
