Acudental Notes: Migraine:
This series of reports is dedicated to various medical problems that can be treated with acupuncture. This first report concerns migraines. Migraines are a moderate to severe headache pain that usually results in pain on one side of the head lasting for 2 hours to 3 days and often is brought on by common stimulation of the senses such as bright light or sound.
At acudental we have successfully treated migraines by doing an EMI exam followed by individual and general acupuncture treatment. The EMI exam is an energy test at 24 diagnostic locations on the hands and feet that can provide a guide to a patients overall energy level. The test takes about 3 minutes to do and is done by touching the skin with a soft Q-tip. Dr Gormley can determine which points need to be stimulated based on the EMI results. These individual points are treated and points he has learned from his teachers are also treated.
The treatment is done by pressing the skin on each of the planned points for approximately 30 seconds each. The pressure is not painful but based on previous experience can be very helpful to relieve current pain and reduce the onset of future pain. Our goal is to treat patients so they can experience less pain and not depend on medication. Individual results can vary, but results have been quite promising.
