10.28.2001: Saturday

Odd night to have a Halloween party, I think, the Sunday before Halloween, but that is the night that Spyral (one of the local dance clubs) opted to throw a 500yen cover charge (if you were in costume, and that included one drink) masquerade ball... Sooooooo since we gaijin hadn't thought to BRING Halloween costumes, the rush began the night before for some sort of costume, somewhere, somehow. Our first thought was Kiddy Land (and our ONLY thought, since Halloween is not nearly as pervasive here in Japan, and Kiddy Land struck us as the only store weird enough to carry costumes), so we ran there and scrambled around for costumes. Meredith, Deborah, Bart, Alison and I found some but not many... I picked up an overpriced pair of pink bunny ears, a cheap bunny nose (that I later decided was altogether too silly and refused to wear), a pink bunny fur scarf-y thing (very soft), and a pink and gold glitter eye mask. I figured I would wear it with my black velvet skirt and shirt and be becostumed enough to get in for 500 yen. ^.^
We quickly checked out and headed back to Makino, and ran to the Hakkenden (a little bar/restaurant, very popular, right by the station). There we met Matt (Happy Birthday!!!), Mike, and Tammy, for Matt's bday party. Hakkenden has something called "Nomihodai," which for a birthday party is only 1000yen. Here's what happens: You have two hours from the time the first drink is ordered, to drink as much as you want (or in Mike and Tammy's case, as much as humanly possible) before they cut you off. For about the equivalent of 9 dollars. Not a bad deal really. So two hours and several Kahlua Milks and Fuzzy Navels later, we went across the street (Went is a cautious word. Most of us walked. Tammy and Mike stumbled their way over) to the Shoen Entertainment Building... for DDDR (Drunk Dance Dance Revolution). It was a very accurate measure of how much everyone had drunk (to my credit, I did really well ^.^ I got an SS on Butterfly and an A on a kicked up Mr. Wonderful (3rd Mix) for anyone who has actually played DDR before). Anyway, we sung "Happy Birthday" 21 times through the night for Matt's 21st birthday, to the amusement and occasional annoyance of the Japanese surrounding us. It was fun.

So then came Sunday, and the party at Spyral. We spent lots of time getting ready (especially getting Ursula ready: Lauren and I had to sit on her to get makeup on her), and eventually we had Ursie the Cat-girl, Lauren the Gaijin (she didn't really have a costume), Byron and Dominique in pajamas (yay last minute!) and Me the Bunny. Alison would meet us later, as a witch. My costume has no pockets, so Ursula offers to hold my keys and my money. Good deal. So off we go... but it's raining cats and dogs. *TO BE CONTINUED*
