Gurinder Sidhu's true Hollywood stories...

Every web site update, I will add a new hilarious story of something that has happened to me. These stories are from a period in my life I like to call the "Hollywood Years." So sit back and enjoy Gurinder's True Hollywood Stories.  I have changed the names of other people involved to save them the humiliation.

A Day at the movies..

It was early 2003, and Bend it Like Beckham hit US theatres with a buzz in the Indian circle and the film buff that I am, I had to see this movie.  I called up one of my good friends, "JV" and we set out together to The Grove in Los Angeles.  The Grove is a fairly new shopping center outside of Beverly Hills and I thought it would be the perfect place to watch a movie and kill a boring Sunday afternoon.  JV picked me up around 1:15pm and we left to battle Sunday afternoon traffic.  About 10 minutes into the drive we hit a red light as we came to a stop in the left turn lane, another car approached.  At the time I didn't think much of it at the time and I saw a few pedestrians crossing the street and me in my infinite wisdom decided to honk the horn so they would think that JV did it.  Little did I know the guy in the car next to us was looking down at the time and thought people were honking at him because the light had changed.  So he punched the gas and almost drove into the intersection until he realized what had happened.  Now many of you may not find this very funny but I guess you had to be there because the look on the guy's face was priceless.

As we continued to the movie theatre laughing our heads off, we were running late so we decided to take some short cuts and made it just as the movie began.  I was getting excited because I had heard good things about this movie and had to help support fellow Punjabi directors.  If you want to know what I thought of the movie you will have to read my review.  To be honest with you the thing I was most impressed with was the actual theatre which was a throwback to old Hollywood.  If you are ever in Los Angeles and want to watch a movie this is the place to watch it, but I digress.  When the movie ended JV got excited that there were a few Punjabi's in the movie and on the way out, ran out and jumped up.  I have no idea what possessed the boy to do this but it just so happens that he jumped right under an exit sign.  This would not have been so bad but the sign was quite low and JV's pug (turban) actually hit the sign and came clean off!  I know I should not laugh at this but it was the funniest thing I have ever seen.  He quickly grabbed his pug and ran into the men's bathroom screaming all the way while the exiting theatre goers were wondering what the hell happened.  I ran into the bathroom behind him to see what he was doing.  I could not stop laughing the entire time.  Another day in Hollywood.

Disclaimer:  Some of the events might have been embellished for comedic effect.  JV is ok and still running out of movies but more wary of exit signs.
