The Early Years
Hello, my name is
Gurinder Singh Sidhu and I was born on
August 20th 1978 at 4:15am in Isleworth,
England. I have one brother Baljinder Singh Sidhu who is 25. I lived
in Hounslow, England attending William
Byrd Primary School until I was 10, when
my family and I moved to the United
States. It was hard moving from England,
even at 10 I had left all my friends and
the only life I knew behind.
London is a lot different than America
as I would soon learn. We moved to Fresno, California
where I attended Vinland Elementary
School. We had essentially moved from
big city life to country life where you
had to take the car anywhere you wanted
to go and people laughed at the idea of
public transportation. Another
major change that took place in our
lives at this time was we became more
religious, when we lived in England my
father, my brother and I did not keep
our hair as is required in Sikhism.
The move to America seemed the perfect
time to become more religious and start
keeping our hair and wearing turbans.
We then later moved to a small town
called Hanford where I attended Pioneer
Elementary and Middle School. It was
hard living in Hanford since we were
pretty much the only Indians living in
that town. We also had turbans and
many students at the school did not know
how to perceive me or my brother and we
were made fun of a lot. The Principal of
the school was very supportive and
called in my mum who talked to the class
about our religion. After that
everything life in school became much
easier and I ended my 8th
grade year making some very good
friends.
The
Later Years
I attended Hanford High School for a few
weeks and then we later moved to Selma
where I finished my high school career
at Selma High School. I finished getting
my Associates Degree in Biological
Sciences at
Reedley College
(formerly known as Kings River College)
in May of 1999. I was enrolled in the
honors program while I was there. I then
transferred to
UCLA
where I majored in Psychology/Sociology.
My goal was to become a physician, but
little did I know that I would soon be
taken on another path before coming back
to where I started. Some of the jobs I
have had while going to school have
included a photo-lab tech. at
Wal-Mart,
working at Blockbuster video,
CSO or
Community Service Officer on campus.
During the summer of 2002 I worked as a
bookseller at Barnes and Nobles. For two
years I worked at
Singh Neurology
Medical Group of Beverly Hills
as the office manager. As you can
tell I have had a wide spectrum of jobs
throughout my life. I also participated
in an internship program at the Santa
Monica- UCLA medical center in the
Care Extender
Program program where I
volunteered in different departments. In
the end of March of 2001 I worked as an
extra on the new Spiderman movie so look
for me in the festival scenes. I was
also an extra in the Steven Spielberg
film, The Terminal but I was cut out :(
but you can see my brother and a few of
my friends in it. It has always
been a long-term dream of mine to become
a film maker and I plan to take a few
classes when I get some free time.
I finished my B.A degree in Sociology in
March of 2002. During my last
semester at UCLA I wanted to do a few
things that would broaden my
perspectives and one of those things was
volunteering at the California Science
Center in Los Angeles. I worked on
their
Titanic exhibit
since the Titanic is one of my
interests. I also interned with the
American Lung
Association,
teaching grade school kids about asthma.
At the tail end of 2003 I began to work
at
Best Buy
in Fresno while completing some
pre-pharmacy courses. After I finished
UCLA I had decided that maybe medicine
was not what I wanted to do, my brother
had gone to med school and I constantly
saw the stress he went through and
decided I should choose another career
path. I began taking extra classes while
in Fresno fishing for a new plan I
entertained the idea of going to
pharmacy school and applied and was
accepted to about nine, while I was
applying my father told me to apply to a
few medical schools as well in case I
changed my mind and I was also accepted
to medical school. I didn't know
what to do so in the summer of 2004 I
took a trip to England to decide what I
wanted to do and ultimately chose
medical school. In the fall of 2004 I
began attending medical school in Maine.
I am currently at the tail end of my 2nd
year and I definitively made the right
choice.
