I (Jody) was born in Southern California. My father is full blooded American Indian (Pueblo) and my mother was of Russian Jewish descent. I know, interesting combo right? I was raised Jewish, by that I mean my mother tried to involve me in Temple services from the time I was 5 until I was 9. I took Hebrew courses .....and couldn't seem to grasp it. We had to travel far to go to Temple, and eventually she lost interest in taking me.
The area that we lived in had a high incident of anti-semitism. I remember my mother making me take Karate classes because kids were picking on me just because I wore a Star Of David around my neck. So, as you can probably guess....I never really got into my religion. I followed my mother and moved to Florida in 1990. She was originally born in Brooklyn and her whole side of the family moved to Florida. I began celebrating the High Holy Days with my family and found it interesting. Yet, I still did not find enough in it to join a congregation and begin learning about my heritage.
There have been times when I felt dissillusioned by my religion. I guess when I saw how much it cost to have a Rabbi perform my marriage ceremony...and I saw he drove a beautiful brand new Lexus...it made me feel that even the holiest had lost touch with what religion was all about.
But, here I am...trying to find some sanity in my life. I don't think you have to belong to a congregation to be a "good" Jew. I just think you need to share with others like you...make a connection. Learn about your heritage...make the best of life. Hopefully, we will be able to make a connection with one another!
Now...about my hubby Aaron. He was born in the mid sixties on a Navy base in Fairborne, Ohio. His father was of Russian Jewish descent and his mother is of Irish/ German descent. He lived his life without observing religion also. When we met, I told him how important it would be to me to raise my children with religion in their lives. He agreed...and said if we had children we could raise them Jewish. He has never technically "converted", being that his mother was not Jewish. Yet, as I said before....I don't feel he has to in order to be a "good" jew. He is a good man and takes all to heart.
I feel that the most important thing, whether you are Christian or Jewish ....is to love G-d! To have a faith that there is such a thing as Kharma. I definitely believe that everything does come down to KINDNESS. I also believe that there is definitely something called ...." The Kharma credit plan"...you buy now and pay later! By that I mean, if you wrong someone now...the revenge on you may not be now...but it will definitely be later!
Well. Enough is said for now! Please visit the links I have provided and be sure to stop in to our
