OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA


WHEREAS, today's local, social issues are interconnected with many global issues such as racism, sexism, religious intolerance, natural disasters, war, health, environment, crime, violence, poverty, homelessness, and drugs; and

WHEREAS, all over the world people are fighting for land and life and looking for the Pathway to Peace; and

WHEREAS, the Global Peace Walk was symbolically initiated on Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday in 1995, by Rev. Yusen Yamato; walking from the United Nations to San Francisco, offering the prayer of "Global Peace Now!" to demonstrate this universal human resolve as the pathway to Global Peace Zone 2000; and

WHEREAS, the Oakland Global Peace Walk is taking place from Oakland City Hall on February 26, 1999 to initiate the global Crisis Solutions Conference at the University of California at Berkeley which will last through March 1, 1999; now

THEREFORE, I, Jerry Brown designate February 26, 1999 as

"Global Peace Walk Day"

in the City of Oakland and I urge the support of all citizens in commemorating this event.
