SANTA SURPLUS: HISTORY AND BIO OF A SUPER GROUP
Santa Surplus was formed in the fall of 1999. It consisted of four members, Aaron Tackett (keyboards), Ryan Lawson (drums), Lucas Dunn (vocals), and Josh Leckie (bass). Having about three songs in total, the band never played shows and quickly met their demise that same winter. A sudden lack of interest was the destroyer of the band. Santa Surplus was now quite idle.
During the time in which Santa Surplus was out of the picture, there were other plans for bands, none that ever got past the basic premise. However, the spirit of Santa Surplus still seemed to thrive in all these ideas. Many of these concepts consisted of a band that had "no direction" or "a skit within a band."
Much like the majestic Phoenix of ancient myth, Santa Surplus rose from their own ashes in December 2000. They played their first show about a week after this. Having a set list of approximately two or three songs, the band told everyone they had more than that. Knowing quite well that they would have to improvise almost every song, they played the show anyway. Needless to say, it probably wasn't the Barnum and Bailey Brothers Circus (i.e. the greatest show on earth), but the show was still a start.
Flash forward to a year later: New shows popped up and Santa Surplus started to grow. A tiny fanbase of kids from their school and around their city were interested in hearing new music and started attending all their shows. Alas, aside from these few people, the band soon learned the Midwest City scene sucks.
This brings us to the present. Santa Surplus is creating a new scene, a new genre for people to listen to. The Dead Dog Demos were recorded and are now being used as a foothold to help them climb up to reach bigger and greater things. A word of warning to those who don't like Santa Surplus: Get used to them now, because you'll be hearing much, much more of the quartet in the future.
