Downloadable Files

Files availible for download can be found all over the Internet, as well as various other online services (AT&T Worldnet, CompuServe, etc). Why are these so common? One, people like to show off what they create. Second, and most important, because it's really easy to do. Do you remember how to create an internal link? This is identical to that process, save that the filename will be the file you want to make downloadable. Most files availible for download will be in .zip file format, or some other type of file compression. This has two effects; firstly it makes the file smaller, thus shortening the download time. Second, a web browser will attempt first to open a file. Failing at this, it will then present you with the option to download.

The HTML will look like this:
<a href="filename.zip">Hypertext</a>,
<a href="directory/filename.zip">Hypertext</a> or
<a href="../directory/filename.zip">Hypertext</a>

Which one you end up using depends on the location of the file on the server. More about properly directing your links can be found here.

While it is possible to link directly to .zip files on other people's pages, thus making them availible on your own as well, this is generally considered impolite, and may well be a copyright infringement. If you are going to do this, make certain the file's owner says it is okay first; getting written permission is usually a good idea.
