Austria Bike Tour - Salzburg

Sightseeing in Salzburg - page 3 of 5

Since there are very few places to drive or park a car in downtown Salzburg, bikes and pedestrians rule. Bikes are lined up along the street where the right lane is dedicated to bicycles. Most of the bikes are "hybrid" type and all have fenders and generator powered lights. Nearly all the bikes are locked and riders do not leave bags, pumps or water bottles on their parked bikes.

Here we are lined up outside of the Institute St. Sebastian where we shared a small dorm room. Unlike hostels we were provided a key to the main door and could leave at anytime day or night. Cost for a bed was only 220 AS or about $17.50 per night including a Spartan breakfast.

OK so just to prove we made it to Salzburg were standing in front of Mozart's birthplace - a big tourist trap.

This is the steep winding trail leading up to the Hohen-Salzburg Fortress. The Fortress was started in 1077 and was significantly enlarged between 1495-1519.

St Peter's Cemetery Arcade contains many old graves and was one of the sites for the Sound of Music. St. Peters Church was built in 1130 and the Catacombs built into the rock walls contain prayer cells used by Christians in around 300 AD.

Biking is such a part of the society they even have public art celebrating the bicycle. This is located along the bike trail along the Salzach River that runs through the center of Salzburg. The exclusive bike route is on the left and pedestrians walk to the right.
