Respectfully submitted, Joan O”GradyBOARD MEETING: REPORT 4/24/2014A small group of members met before the regular meeting: Board. Members: President Michael Daly, Joan O’Grady, Janet Mager, Eileen Budney, Peggy Loucks, Josephine Serra. Members: Marian Lieberman, Carol Kirschner, Judy Larsen. Josephine Serra agreed to become a member of our Board and the position will be voted in September.
The situation at Rose Caracappa Center WAS discussed.
Joan O’Grady received a call April 21, 2014 (3 days before the regularly scheduled meeting for April 24, 2014) informing her that the MCRA must pay a $40.00 charge voted in by the Town of Brookhaven Board in January, 2014. Joan told the Director that she had not been notified of this news and that at the meeting 4/21/14 the Board will decide what we will do going forward. The Director then told Joan that the MCRA could not come into the building unless they gave her the $40.00 before entering. Joan told her that she would need to meet with the Board before any money is expended from the MCRA Treasury. The Director asked if Joan could not call the Board for their vote. Unacceptable for Joan. It was then agreed that we could come in and hold a meeting but must do the vote first and pay the $40.00 immediately after. Joan then asked what if the MCRA Board decides not to use the Center here-on-in and asked if we would have to exit the building after the vote? The Director said “Yes, we would.“ It was stated to the Director that we had already sent out our notices and e-mails stating that we would have pizza and coffee afterward. She then said Joan did not tell her that. The Director knows how our meetings are run and pizza and coffee had been agreed upon when we first started with the Center. In fact we invite the Director and her associates to join us when we have left over pizza. This whole thing sounded idiotic so after some further banter it was agreed that we could stay and complete the meeting. Joan called into the Town of Brookhaven offices on 4/21 and after many transfers reached the office of Commissioner Diane Weir and left a message with her secretary to have her call us. Joan called her back at 2 pm on Tuesday and Ms. Weir said she would look into this. The result was that we could surely hold the meeting and determine then what it is the MCRA will do. We paid $40.00 on 4/24/14 for 2 meetings, April 24 and May 22, 2014. The future is uncertain.
MINUTES: REGULAR MEETING APRIL 24, 2014;
President Michael Daly opened the meeting at 1:10 pm and began with the Pledge and a Moment of Silence for our deceased members. He then told the assembly about a letter received from the district School Social Worker with a request from our Helping Hands Fund for a student (JL) she is working who is in dire need of financial help. His life is not a good one but is a good student, polite and talented athlete. He can not afford to buy sporting equipment and needs. Asked if we could help him out with a donation to the Middle Country Booster group that they could use solely for J.L. It was put to a vote and unanimously it was decided to send a MC Soccer check for $250 in addition to 3 gift cards of $50.00 each to Taco Bell or Dunkin Donuts; Dicks or Sports Authority; a movie theater. Total $400.00 donation.
Joan O’Grady notified the assembly about the recent vote by NYS and subsequently by the MCCSD #11 School Board allowing for the Veteran’s School Tax exclusion by the Town of Brookhaven. Asked if they had any questions to please contact the Town’s Assessors Office.
Peggy Loucks informed the members of her choices of future trips and wanted their input as to what they would prefer. It was decided to include all of the in our April News Letter and have everyone in the Association respond.
Marie Lewis gave a financial report and said we are solid and sound.
Michael Daly asked if Joan would present the two annual $1000.00 Scholarships each to a NHS student on May 15 and at CHS on May 19. Names will be forthcoming from the high schools. She accepted.
